View Full Version : Need your help to test board

We may have come across something that might help some of the problems we are having with the boards.
At the top of the boards, there is a link to "Cooking Light Community". I have found that when I first enter the boards (though a bookmark in my browser) my "View posts" selection defaults to 45 days. However, when I click on the "Cooking Light Community" link and then come back in to the same board, the "View posts" selection then shows what I have selected in my own preferences.
If you would happen to have a minute or two to test this on your browser, it may shine some light on this problem. (I would suggest quitting out of your browser first and then testing for more accurate results.)
If you reply, please let me know if you are on a Mac or PC, using Internet Explorer or Netscape. Thanks.

First of all, I'm using a PC with Internet Explorer.
Here's what I've discovered. When I entered the BB using my old bookmark http://www.cookinglight.com/bulletin_board.asp my preference came up as 45 days. I tried what you suggested, and when I re-entered, it defaulted to my preference of 5 days. This was what I had bookmarked from the previous BB.
The new bookmark I've been using is http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&Bypasscookie=true My preference on initial entry every time is my preset of 5 days.
I hope this helps you solve the problem.
In the first URL, there's an underscore between the words bulletin and board. You can't see it because of the underline.

Hi,
I m glad you ve set up this board, even if it is temporary. Good stuff!
I have both Internet Explorer and Netscape and tried exactly what you suggested. In both cases, the reaction was identical to yours. Through my bookmark directly to the board, I get a 45 day default, if I enter and come in via the Community, I get my own personal preferences.

I also have both Explorer and Netscape and had the same results as Gail and as you.

Maelynn,
I have the same results as you and others. I do have one question though. In this test I came in from the very beginning (home page) and came to Bulletin Boards where you had to pick one to enter. Is there a way that the "Cooking Light Community" listing would show instead? I found that when I came in from the Home Page and then to Bulletin Board and then choose Good Food that the default was 45 days just like my bookmark. Are you confused?? LOL I am going to change my bookmark to bring me to the Community listing. I have Internet Explorer, PC. Thanks for getting this straighten out.

Thanks to all of you who tested this. Mamasue, you read my mind. I've already thought about making the Community page the main Bulletin Board page that people reach when they come in through the home page. I wanted to make sure that you all were getting the same result from the community page that we were here.
Looks like making the Community page the main board page would help the preferences issues.
I'm on it. I'll let you know when changes will be made.
Thanks.

Mamasue-- Oh my gosh. I just accidentally edited your post! Sorry. I didn't lose the important part though. Oh, they should think twice before giving me such powers on these boards!!! I am so sorry! Someone slap my hand. (I gave my post the big thumbs down icon for being brain dead.)
Anyway -- I just posted the following reply to the same question on the Food board under the thread entitled "Question for Maelynn".
_____
No, they shouldn't be a problem. The images aren't actually residing on our server so it doesn't affect our server memory. It may cause some of the boards to take a little longer to fully load, but still, I haven't seen any images large enough in memory to cause a large decrease in download time. If it ever seems to become a problem, or if it ends up dragging the boards down to the point that content or ease-of-use is being sacrificed, then we would possibly change the policy at that time.

Thanks Maelynn...I should have deleted this one anyway because when I went to Good Food board I found your reply. I am glad that it doesn't interfere right now, but please let us know if it does cause problems. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
By the way....we are all brain dead sometimes....its allowed! LOL http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Maelynn -
Hi! I'm an old hand at software support and know how frustrating fixing bugs is, especially when you have problems recreating them yourself.
I use both AOL and Compuserve and also Internet Explorer to get online. I have the Cooking Light Community Bullboard set and click on Great Food. Every time I go in, my default is 45 days. After I read my first post, it will send me back to my preferences which is 2 days. Hope this helps.
Keep up the great work! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Don't know if this figures at all into the general scheme of things, but in those cases where I've requested to be notified by e-mail that I've gotten a response to my post, clicking on the link sends me into the board with my preset personal preferences. Until your techs are able to work things so that I can enter via my bookmark and have my preset preferences working, coming in via this link seems to work best for me, so I'm leaving one CL message in my e-mail.
Drat! I forgot to ask you my question...
Are the numerous mega-threads we've created (the ones with fifty million responses) at all responsible for appreciably slowing down loading time?

I get past your main board menu but when I click on Great Foods, I get tossed back to the pop-down for select how many days. I am new to this board using MSN. I will keep trying.
