11:00 at night, and there is this apparently insane bird in the tree that sits outside our house. I've never heard this one before--it has a call that sounds like a squeaky fan belt, lasts about 6 seconds from start to finish, and has about 7 seconds of silence from the end of one call until the next one begins. Plus, I can't believe how freakin' LOUD it is! I'm inside the house with everything closed, the AC and television on, and it still pretty much drowns everything out. It also seems to be bringing out the noise in the other resident wildlife, as it sounds sort of like a jungle when I step outside. Normally, I love nature but after working 80 hours this week, and knowing that I am baking about 24 dozen cookies tomorrow, I'd really like to get some sleep.

Apparently, I just needed to grumble, and DH is asleep already.

Normally I love nature too, but sometimes our furry or feathered little friends make me want to run out and buy a BB gun!

Hope you got some sleep!

24 dozen cookies! What are you baking them for?

Is it an annoyed Cactus Wren?

You can hear the voice on THIS (http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/811/overview/Cactus_Wren.aspx) site.

What a great site, KristiB! This will be extremely helpful in identifying the calls our backyard birds. Thanks!

Hope you got some sleep. I'm curious about the mass amounts of cookies too. I've never been asked to brng more than 10 dozen at a time. Happy baking!

ETA -- found a reference to baking for the start of school. Wow! I can't believe we're not the first back to school anymore. We don't start until the 27th, and it's so strange. The legislature passed a law that pretty much set the date and put us going into June -- which is when it will be really hard. I wonder if this will stick. Anyway, hope you have a great first day tomorrow.

If you're too tired for all the drop cookies you planned, try a pan or two of bar cookies. I usually throw a pan of those, some slice and bake refrigerator types or the forgotten meringue cookies that can sit in the oven overnight while I sleep. :)

Explanation to be found on this (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?t=108490) thread. ;) Please don't take this the wrong way! :D

I pulled up my big girl panties and found it all by myself (while looking for something else, but that doesn't really matter, does it?). Don't takle that the wrong way. ;) :D

Thanks just the same.

Me too!

Well, at least we didn't post a separate thread with our wonderings.......... :p

Yeah, I think with being kept awake by a crazy bird and baking 24 dozen cookies, she's got enough on her hands without answering my silly questions.

Ha! Ya'll crack me up. Kristi, it might have been a cactus wren. I hear the call that is on the website all day long, because they're all over the place, but if he/she was annoyed, it might have taken on the shrill, never-endingness I heard last night. Or maybe it was out on a drunk, and came home singing. :p All I know is that it lasted for 3 hours in the exact same, repetitive pattern. I was ready to go out with a flashlight and throw cookie dough at it.

And you are all good detectives, but I certainly never resent your questions--as you all (I'm sure) never resent mine! :D All I can say is, I'd better have some happy teachers tomorrow. Unlike my poor DD, who has a mandatory curriculum meeting for two hours after the first day of school tomorrow. Unbelievable!

Well then that would be my neighbors who were singing karaoke outside, very loudly about that time last night......

You have lucky coworkers! :)
