View Full Version : Mother of the Groom dress - and fast!

Due to a series of tailoring debaucles, my mother is without a dress to wear to her son's wedding in the south of France on September 1! Mom's leaving for France in two weeks, so dresses need to be available in-store or with incredibly fast shipping. Two different dresses are preferred, since the ceremony's early in the day and takes us from the town hall to the Catholic church, and the reception is in a castle a few hours later, and will last until the wee morning hours. (It's also supposed to be cold in the castle at night.)
Melanie, I re-read your Mother of the Groom (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?t=100378) thread. What did you end up wearing? (Did I miss it?)
Mom's not a suit-type MOG. Her original dresses were a long simple DKNY sleeveless brown dress, and another one was a vintage pale gold-pink beaded skirt with a beautiful top. (They're both sadly beyond repair after a tailor dropped food onto the skirt and the cleaner faded it and the sheath isn't fitting right since a different tailor got their hands on it!)
I'll ask my Cleveland-area brides, but I know we'd both appreciate any advice you could give us!

Dropped food on the dress? OMG, what a nightmare! I'll do some looking around and post anything I find. Debie, where are you?

Oh, the food thing is ridiculous. Mom picked up the skirt, which had been perfectly clean before, from the tailor. Tailor looks at the skirt, sees the spot and says, "Hmmm, there's something I didn't see before. Here, let me pin it for you since you'll want to have it cleaned."

I don't think I ever posted the results of my search. I did exactly as suggested on the board and contacted the personal shopper at Nordstrom in Charlotte. She was FABULOUS!!!! I drove up early in February (end of January?) at a really bad time of the year. They were still getting rid of their clearance items but not yet putting out the spring items. The selections were limited. The PS had put about 4 or 5 dresses in the dressing room before I got there. I had told her my size, shape, coloring, and sort of an idea of what I wanted. I probably could have used 3 of them, but one of them was a no-brainer! It was exactly what I wanted and in an absolutely perfect color.
Here's the link (can't believe it's still on the site)... http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2884897/0~2376776~2374327~6005464~6005515~6005555?mediumth umbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6005555&P=1
I bought it in mocha - it was a gorgeous color of brown, but not "chocolate". It was pretty much the color of the highlights in my hair. It was a nice flowy, yet almost shimmery fabric. I thought it was "graceful". The best part of the dress is that I could take off the jacket and still be covered (versus spaghetti straps, major cleavage, etc.) I took the jacket off soon after arriving at the reception. PS - When I first looked through their website, I'm sure I saw this dress. It never even caught my interest. It's definitely one of those dresses that had magic after putting it on. I also didn't clasp it at the neck. My tailor fixed the top of the jacket so it would stay in the right place without having to be hooked together.
I wish you could use my tailor! She's fabulous!!! She altered dresses for quite a few people for the wedding...to perfection!
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Dilliard's also has a mother of the bride/mother of the groom section. They have a nice selection. You can purchase dress on line also.

On four occasions while I lived abroad, I needed to get a MOG ensemble overnight. Including Rehearsal Dinner...
Nordstrom is amazing. I called the Tyson's Corner Nordstrom from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on all four occasions, giving them a complete description of my size, coloring, price range, anything but beige and no lace or pastels, and every time I arrived to a dressing room full of dresses, suits, costume jewelry, shoes, everything. They even expedited tailoring. And all this at no extra cost.
Nordstrom rocks.:D :D :D

That's one hell of a statistic. :D
I totally agree that Nordstrom's rocks. I'm planning on heading there tomorrow to look for a new dress for myself. (I have dresses, but I'm just not SOLD on them. And when I looked for them, my brother hadn't told me that the castle gets cold at night and there's no heat. It's September 1 on the Mediterranean - who would have thought I'd have to contend with COLD?)
Mom called me today, and you could just HEAR the relief in her voice. She found a dress - I haven't seen it yet - but she's audibly relieved. I'll be sure to post pictures when we get home.

Melman's MOG dress was my MOB dress last October. Bought it online in two sizes, picked the one that fit and sent the other back, and got LOADS of compliments.

I think that's what I'm going to do:D If I can't find it in the store...how do the sizes run? Are they pretty true to size?

Most of the dresses I tried on were very true to size. For some reason though, I was able to go with one size smaller in the dress I ended up buying. Buying two sizes and returning one is a great idea. With only $5 shipping, that's a good deal!

I had the mocha too -- went nicely with the red hair. And strappy tri-metallic shoes. Danced the night away . . .
Easiest MOB dress I ever bought -- and, hopefully, the LAST as that was the third and final daughter to get married.

The clothes saga continues ...
My mother and father left on Saturday for the south of France. They changed planes in Detroit and London Gatwick before arriving at their final destination. The good news: Mom's dress made it just fine!
The bad news: Dad's bag is lost! It's not just delayed, it's absolutely lost. Neither Northwest nor British Airways has any idea where it is. Dad's without a suit ... without ANYTHING, basically.
FI and I are leaving Wednesday, and we've decided to carry all of our bags on board. We're hoping dad's bag shows up before then, and if it's in the states, I'll do my best to get it there.
