Edit function

How come after a certain amount of time we are no longer able to edit our posts. The edit button disappears....

One purpose of this is to keep people from being "revisionists". This is when somebody flames a member and then goes back to edit the "nastiness" out of their post after the "pot has been stirred". I have seen a few variations of this on this forum.
