Hiya!
I saw in another thread you posted pictures of tazers- do you really have one? I am asking because I was thinking of getting "something for personal protection" and I don't know what to get. I have a dog that is getting on in years and she needs to out out no earlier than 10pm to make it through the night without soiling. We live in a townhouse so we can't just let her out in the yard to pee- she has to go on a real walk. We have lived here for five years, but recently had our first local crime. A 16 year old got off the bus about two block from our house. While walking home she was raped. They didn't release any details so I don't know where exactly the rape happened. We have some walking paths that go around some darker isolated areas. I have also not heard if they have caught the perpertrator. Now I am paranoid when I take Calypso out on walks. My husband hates walking her and travel quite a bit anyway so even if he took the night walk that still wouldn't work all the time. Does anyone recommend anything for protection.

No I just posted the picture for that thread-I don't have one.

I will admit the picture of the pink one is kinda cute.

I'm a little conflicted on carrying weapons. If you decide to carry a taser then I would also take some self defense classes so it doesn't end up getting used on you and so you have alternatives if you can't use it.

Nope, I don't own one. I just remembered reading about the pink one recently and had to make KristiB envious (her's was SOOO last year! :D)

From the article I read, I think you must pass a class to carry one and the civilian ones only have a range of 6 feet ( the ones for LEOs have a 15 ft range.) This is just what I remember, so it might be wrong. If you google it (spelled "Taser") you can find the company that makes them and their site should have more info.

Honestly, a self-defense class and really good awareness while walking around are probably a better idea.

LOL! I love those books! And yes, it would deter anyone from owning one of those things!:p

Just how feeble is your older dog? I only ask because frankly I cannot imagine that anyone will bother you with a dog. Even my ancient German Shepherd who has like no hip support or muscle and therefore falls a lot (he is 12.5) can put on quite a display of barking, etc.

Laura

PS I agree with everyone else--forget weapons and go with self dense classes.

She is a collie/ spaniel mix. She looks like a normal dog when she walks, but she in not very intimidating. The old/infirm part is that she can't go overnight without a piddle. She used to be able to last about 8 hours- I would walk her around 8-9 and my husband would let her out at 5. Now she needs to out closer to midnight.
I do stay in open spaces and watch whats going on around me, but it is scary to think someone might be watching the neighborhood looking for victems.

How about good ole pepper spray? That's what I carry around with me. It was actually issued to me at work. It's a small thing - goes right on my keychain.

Or a whistle. Lots of noise will scare someone away.

This is why the dog will be a deterrent no matter how un-intimidating she is. She loves you--I promise she WILL bark and make a fuss if someone bothers you.

But I do like the idea of a whistle. :D
