Melman, our son is getting married late September and he has asked my thoughts of a song for our groom/mother of the groom dance.
I am just curious, what song did you finally go with?
TIA

Here's the way the first three songs of the evening panned out -
Son and new bride did a BEAUTIFUL dance to Henry Mancini's "A Time for Us". They had been taking dance lessons and it was a gorgeous dance. Lots of oohs and aaahs from the folks at the reception.
The bride and her father danced to some Kenny G song. (They all tend to sound the same to me, so I can't even guess which one it was.)
And then it was our turn. Song choice? "Sweet Child of Mine" by Sheryl Crowe. I thought the words (for the most part) were just right for a mother/groom dance. With Sheryl singing it, it seemed to fit just right because he really was my 'sweet child'. :D The beat was actually just right for the dance we practiced as well.
I read the lyrics of SOOOOO many songs that were suggested for this song and thought the majority of them were really BAD! I wondered if people actually listened to the words of some of those things! And then we wanted a particular beat because of the dance steps we were using. Most songs were EXTREMELY slow...and a few were just a little too fast.
Other options that were in consideration were "Blessed" by Elton John...and, unfortunately, I can't remember the others. I'll have to see if I can come up with the other songs I thought about using. (Darn...I know there was one I REALLY wanted to use, but the beat was on the fast side.)
By the way, when our song started and people figured out what it was, they applauded!!! :D
Good luck!!!!

Thanks, Melman. It sounds like your wedding was wonderful.
One problem I am having though is finding this song by Sheryl Crowe on ITunes. Is there a possibility of it being known by another name too?
Thanks!

It's there. It's on her "The Globe Sessions" CD.

Thanks for pointing SweetTooth to the correct CD. A friend of mine suggested the song and sent it to me via email. I ended up buying the CD so we could use it at the wedding. I never looked for it in ITunes.

thanks badunnin for the info. I will go back to ITunes and look again. For some reason, I am not having much luck.
I can always go to B&Noble and listen to the CD there too, esp if I need to buy it. :o)

Try going to Amazon and bmgmusic.com to see if you can find at least 15-30 second clips. You may get an idea from there.
