It is about time! Putting aside the firings of the U.S. attorney generals, I think he had to resign because it certainly seemed like he had trouble keeping his stories straight in his congressional testimony.

Heheh! I read "gonzales balls" too, and thought to myself, yes, he certainly has some big ones. . . (metaphorically speaking, that is. I personally know nothing of his literal balls).
I'm simultaneously surprised that he's resigning and stunned that it took this long.

Calling the job "thankless" seems to imply he should be thanked for it...which I think MANY people would disagree with.
It seems like the rats are leaving the sinking ship....

Almost all political appointee jobs are pretty thankless. I don't think he needs thanks for his performance, though. Even I thought he should resign.

Maybe it has more to do with the "If your are here on Labor Day you are here until Jan 2008" ultimatum by WH COS. Gonzo knew he couldn't stick it out until 08 so he bailed. If W is smart he will pick Danforth (Jack is often refered to as the fourth branch of the US Government) but the names I have heard floated are Chertoff and Hatch.

Chertoff - seriously?! Let's hope that is a mistake - Chertoff has already shown his incompetency with Katrina.

You know, that "ultimatum" is such a crock....what exactly are they going to threaten people with if they, for whatever reason, quit after Labor Day? Toss them out of some secret club?

Toss them out of some secret club?
AND take back their secret decoder ring. Apparently they mean business. ;)

As long as they're not wearing white shoes after Labor Day ;-)
Gosh, why does good stuff like this always happen when the Daily Show is on vacation?!
