I don't know why this bugged me so much but it did. Anyway we just moved so it is taking a while to get us on the no call list. The call went like this:

Me: Hello
Creepy Guy (CG): John? [DH's name]
Me: No
CG: Is this Mrs. John?
Me: May I ask who is calling?
CG: Sure this is Cameron.

Silence....

Me: What is this in regard to?
CG: You don't remember me?
Me: No.
CG: We met at the store a few weeks back!

Silence

CG: You really don't remember me?...

[Now of course because we just moved here I am feeling insecure and wondering where I could have met this guy.]

CG: I can't believe you don't remember me!

Silence

CG: Nah... I'm just messing with you, I'm calling from....

Now is it just me or is that massively inappropriate? I don't know why it creeped me out so much, but it really did. I hate that he made me wonder which of DH's new colleagues I might not have remembered meeting and I hate that he wasted my time and most of all I really hate that some stranger took such a familiar tone with me. I don't know why but it made me feel like peeping through my curtains and looking for him in my driveway. YUCK. Needless to say I told him to take us off of their list and hung up.

I don't blame you a bit for feeling that way. It would have creeped me out, too.

That was creepy, but he got you to stay on the line which was probably his goal. Then you're "friends" so you'll listen to his deal. Ick.

My cousins son (about 12 at the time) used to get on the phone with telemarketers and when they started their spiel he'd say, "My buns stink". That would stop them in their tracks. They'd ask, "What?" He'd repeat it. They'd hang up. I loved it.

Try to do a *69 on the phone to get the phone number and then Google the phone number to see who it is.

If he has his information blocked you might want to set your phone number to where anyone who has a concealed number can't call you.

While I agree that it was entirely inappropriate I will say that I've been on his end of telemarketing (in college, desparate for some sort of job in a town that couldn't support all the students coming in) and I know how mundane it gets. So, my guess is he decided to have some fun. Absolutely inappropriate but my guess is harmless.

I agree. Totally creepy and massively inappropriate. I would have had half a mind to tell him where to go! I agree with Gumbeaux about trying to trace the number and/or getting your phone set up to block the number. We have a service package on our phone that allows us to trace, block, and do several other options to help stop the calls. Unfortunately, we can't block certain numbers. One local charity here kept calling me, even though I told them to take my name off their list (they even some how have my maiden name and I never lived in this area when I wasn't married). The blocking feature on my phone won't allow me to use it on that number. But, we do have the feature to stop calls that come through on the caller ID as unkown. We haven't had one of those unkown callers since I set it up.

Loremma -- that is hilarious about your cousin's son. :D

Honestly I am more likely to just forget about it--as Robyn said I am sure he was just some dumb kid/guy out for laughs. But it did really tick me off at the same time, so I figured I would post here and vent a little, get some sympathy. :p I do wish I had paid more attention to the name of his company (something about publishing in Chicago?) but by that point I just wanted off the phone so I pretty much hung up on him. My dad called right after him so it was too late to *69....

My husband loves to yank their chain. Some laugh, but one cursed at him and hung up! He's not rude, he just asks a TON of really annoying questions and talks really loud. I try to shout "hang up now" in the background to save these poor people...... :D

That is creepy Laura.

If someone ever does that again, you could have a little fun - Cameron, yes, I remember you! And take it from there....... :D

My DH toys with telemarketers and surveyors all the time. I had a friend who when asked "how are you?" would launch into how he was running out of antidepressants and his dog was dying ... usually the caller would beat a hasty retreat.

Yeah, I do too.

If they won't hang up, I ask them questions like "what are you wearing?" :D

I find that if I pick up a Bible and start reading it aloud, telemarketers will hang up on me. One time a guy asked me what I was reading to him - it was the start of an interesting conversation at least!

My friend's late father used to tell every telemarketer: "I get everything I need at K-Mart." I always think of that when I think of him. He would even tell the handicapped person selling lifetime guaranteed light bulbs that.

By the way, I ordered some of those lightbulbs and they didn't last a month.
