View Full Version : Way too Hot Here!

So, if somebody else has started a thread to complain about how hot it is in Southern California this holiday weekend, I missed it.

It seems that it has been hot and just keeps getting hotter. It is 85 degrees still at 11pm at night. It was 109 today. All my outdoor plans for the holiday weekend have been cancelled due to the extreme heat. :(

And I absolutely have no choice but to do my yard work tomorrow morning. Here's hoping I don't get heat stroke!! If I never post again . . .

I think this is one of those times where a very early morning lawn mowing/yard work is acceptable to the neighbors. Get out there while the weather is as cool as possible.

It's blazing here in San Diego as well. High humidity and heat. Ugh! We're 5 miles from the coast as the crow flies, and it was 90 degrees and high humidity. It's supposed to break a bit after the weekend. Hopefully.

And from the parent/health department: Drink lots of water everyone! DW and I are going to the movies today to beat the heat for a bit. Still undecided as to movie, but it almost doesn't matter. LOL.

It was worse last summer. I suffered through 4 months of non-stop triple digits -- with no A/C and hot flashes to boot

I'm counting these few days of "extreme heat" (I hear East coast weathermen are describing the Southwest this Labor Day as the "BBQ Zone") a small price to pay for a mellower than normal August.

P.S. I still have no A/C ......

It's very hot here in San Diego! We live about 7 miles from the coast
(as the crow flies). Yesterday's high at my house was in the 90's.

I get the pleasure of going with Grandson and Mom to a birthday party
about 10 miles inland. I'm sure I'm going to melt.

Will make sure the birds have plenty water but not much yard work from
me today.

Here are some cloud pictures from last night (8/31/07). We don't get a lot of this kind of stuff here in San Diego so these are very special for us. Although I hate the humidity that goes along with them. Ugh!
Hope you enjoy them. :D

How in the world do you survive?

I've learned a few tricks from the enegetic 70-yr old-lady neighbor next door.....and other things on my own.

Yes, I am at home all day long....no escaping to some air-conditioned work place. The worst times are the late afternoons into the late evenings when the house heats up and there is no way to cool it back down.

Ceiling fans in every room are helpful; but not a complete answer.

I told my DH no A/C was "wife abuse". Next time he says, we'll yank the old A/C unit for a more efficient one, I'll make certain we have the new unit first ;)

The good news is: the hot flashes are all gone.....scared away by last summer's triple digits, I think.

I am a few miles from the coast and its already hot at 9am. I don't feel like cooking or gardening. Maybe thats why I am just waiting for fall! I put nice cool water out for the birds this morning..now I am going to clean out the fridge. Its a perfect job for this kind of weather.

We're feeling it too. Ugh. I was just telling dh how the house is becoming such a mess and I am absolutely unmotivated to tend to it. I finally figured out that it's the heat. The kids start school on Tuesday and I don't know how they'll survive. Some of the classrooms have air, but the difference it makes is minimal.
Our air has been out all summer. Dh finally fixed it last week. Since we'd been surviving without it, we decided to set it at 80 and see what happens. it comes on every afternoon and into the evening. It's not freezing, but it's way better than outside.
Come on, Fall!

My poor sister is at a 'horse clinic' outside of Sacramento this weekend and CAMPING OUT! Bless her heart! Anybody know what the temps are going to be in the area?

OMG! I cannot imagine. Keep all of your drapes and blinds closed. That really helps.

So you can see I survived my yard work. Started at 7am. And finished by 8:20. I was quickly running out of shade and getting quite hot. I heard many other mowers running too, so I wasn't the only only one.

I will be spending the rest of the day indoors. Watching the U.S. Open, reading my book, and drinking frozen cocktail concoctions (I guess there is one good thing about hot weather).

Tomorrow's 5K walk in Norco isn't cancelled after all. They are letting folks start at 7am instead of 8am. So Gigi and I will go early. We love our 5Ks. And I have a new walking buddy joining us, so that will be fun. :)

Drapes, blinds, doors to unused rooms are closed & drawn; also lights off, fans on..... Its like living in a dark closet. Somedays I believe I could morph into a mushroom; but I do have to leave the darkness & check on the horses every couple of hours. The poor babies are also hot. They are standing barned, hosed, shaded & also with fans on. My black-haired dogs are panting with tongues to the ground in the worst heat of the day. I squirt them down, too.

At least today, there are PBS cooking shows on the TV for my inside entertainment.

Doesn't surprise me about the 5K not being cancelled; afterall, people are still out horseback riding in this heat  The smarter ones ride very early a.m or after dark. We adapt our schedules.

And even though I told the gardener not to worry about the lawn & go home yesterday (at 1:00 in that inhuman afternoon heat).... that I'd pay him all the same..........he worked anyway.

I'm so looking forward to Tuesday when we are supposed to get a break. Please let it be true.

And I don't know if you have these stupid vaulted ceilings that they think everybody wants in the newer homes. I am so glad to be cooling the air up there.

Not likely. Check out the street corral in front of the Saddle Sore Saloon. Horses standing fully tacked & tied at high noon with no shade while their owners are inside enjoying a meal & a cool one

And I don't know if you have these stupid vaulted ceilings....

Thank goodness, No. And the previous owners stuffed the attic full of insulation, which is paying off on days like this. I won't be complaining about the electric/A.C. bill at the end of the month like some of the neighbors. :)

And my very black dog is lying inside, nice and cool, with the a/c set to 77 ....

.....While my two have dug deep wide holes in the back lawn to lie in.

The holes with the wettest dirt (nearest the sprinkler heads & in the shade) are their favorites. With this heat, we are also suffering with an influx of flies. The dogs prefer dirt to being sprayed with repellent. Ugh.

Even our goose refused to give up his spot. I've had to pick him up and carry him back to the barn.

I haven't been through Norco in a while, since I moved, is the Camel still around? I just about crashed my car the first time I saw the owner walking the camel. My son and I just loved seeing it, he was our good luck charm (so we thought). I miss seeing the big Gumby those folks have/had in their yard on Californa street (I think that was the name of the street).

Gumby is still here -- they allow him out for city parades :D

There are two camels -- different owners. I think the one you saw walking in town was Matilda. I heard she was moving away; but we still have Deputy Sheriff, Burt the camel (Yes, he's a real deputy sheriff).

Burt was next door just a couple of months ago. You think you were scared when you saw a camel. When the horse next door saw him, she jumped onto a 4' tall block wall! She was so freaked by his eight foot tall presence, we had to cut a hole through a chain link fence so she could be rescued

I've never gone in. The official name is Saddle Sore Eatery & Saloon. Its changed hands, but I always thought of it as a beer joint with food. I prefer Reyna's (small Mexican restaurant --eat in or take out) around the corner. Great Tortas.

As for the elephants, they lived on the other side of the river. When I first moved in, I looked out my kitchen window and there they were....passing on the horse trail on their way towards the parade staging area in the early morning.

Used to be, if you were a successful dairy owner you owned "exotics". The more successful, the more & unique exotics you owned. One farm had several elephants kept in large paddocks at the back of their property. In the front yard was an area with a pond dedicated to birds, deer, & other creatures that people could walk up to from the street with kids in tow. Now, its all tract homes and the dairies have moved further out to less inhabited places.

I don't know why I am so facinated by this thread, I have read every post and I am increasingly dismayed. I am pretty sure that the hottest temperature I have ever experienced in my life is 104 and that was only once and only for a few hours. Surprisingly it was here in Montreal, it can be quite hot at times. I can't even imagine what 112 might feel like. What I don't understand is that when it gets really hot like that they report several heat related deaths here. But you all seem to cope with much hotter temperatures for several weeks on end. I honestly do not know how you manage. Current conditions here at 7am is 46 degree F (8 C) and humidity 93%. Now I am wondering if it is the humidity that makes the heat here so unbearable. How humid is it over there? I have difficulty tolerating when it get near 90 degrees, but then humidity would be close to 100%

Part of it is that in Las Vegas and other places where it gets ungodly hot, people are better equipped to deal with it. More things are air conditioned - here in Detroit, we have a good number of people that don't have air conditioning, so that when the temps do rise to 100F for a week or so, they have no escape. Another part is the humidity - it's currently 82F in Las Vegas (at 7:15am) with 35% humidity. When it tops out at 106 today, it will only be about 15% humidity, so it actually feels a few degrees cooler, whereas here in Michigan, that rarely happens (way too much water surrounding us!).

Sorry we don't feel sorry for you or Canice!!! :D

No need. ;) The fog burned off on schedule yesterday, and today is a bright sunny 65, climbing to 74 in the afternoon.
I still think one of the most surprising things I've learned on this BB is that I live in such a humid environment; it was something like 84% yesterday, yet til I read someone here comment on it, I'd never heard of or thought of SF as humid. 'course, I'm looking at that rather large body of water out there, and, uh, I guess it makes sense. ;)

It is 10:30. Currently 97 degrees but feels like 100. and is 35% humidity. And this is humid for us.

Not all of us have a/c. Luckily, I do. But foodfly is suffering without any.

And my walking buddy doesn't even have a/c in her house. She said at 10:30pm last night it was 95 degrees in the house!!! We went on a 5K walk this morning. Started at 7am and finished a little after 8am (I am the slow one). I was probably as red as a tomato.

ETA: As I was typing this we had an earthquake! Wow, I wonder if the hot weather contributed to it.

OMG, armel, I get that "tomato" face too! I once walked home from work on a very hot and muggy day, with a couple of intense hills to deal with. I walked into the lobby of my building and the manager's jaw dropped - "Are you OK?!" It took a good hour to resume my normal pallid look.

After the lightning and thunder we had the other night I told my girlfriend (the one who lives in Elsinor) that this was earthquake weather. She kept say oh shut up don't say that!!

I was the first person she called this morning....when I answered the phone the first thing I said was I TOLD YOU SO! :p Now she is claiming it was my fault, that I cursed us! he he he Hey I just call them as I see them! :D

I remembered that I forgot to water the plants outside in the pots this morning (not a good thing when it is 106 degrees as of 12:18p). So i went out to water. Gigi came with me.

About halfway through I noticed that I didn't see the dog anymore. When I walked inside, there she was lying on the cool kitchen tile. She is no fool.

I could almost see the little bubble above her head "Go ahead and water in this heat. I am going back in the a/c":D

We were on a walk organized by an AVA walking club. When I went to turn in my card, they started spraying me with water. Probably afraid I was going to have heat stroke. But I was fine. I turn red in about 2 seconds when I exercise. So add the hot weather . . . and my face resembles this color  :D

Its really hot today here as well. Its weird, because sometimes it can be approaching 90 degrees outside, and its not hot inside and sometimes its hot inside and I turn on the AC.

For those of you who don't have AC, and where it cools down at night, you could try putting a fan in your window at night. That helps us here, and I often find it comfortable enough inside to leave the AC off until mid-day.

I began doing the box fan in the window 2 weeks ago in addition to my existing ceiling fans in every room.

I wanted to say that I've been using a Lasko 20" box fan and I highly recommend the brand. I picked four up last summer for the horse stalls; luckily I had one left over.

If you ever need a box fan, scoop that brand up -- Lasko. Best $15.00/ea (Home Depot) value ever. The ones in the barn and the one I am using to suck in cool air from the outside into the house at night are running like champs.

I give the same high recommendation to my Casablanca ceiling fans that have delivered for years with continuous & reliable use.

No, I don't sell fans. But you do know I have no A/C. The fans have been instrumental in surviving two summers of excessive heat.

I'd be with the old people in a cooling center if I did not have these running night and day :p

thanx LaraW for bringing it up.

Ugh. It was hotter and higher humidity down here in San Diego today. 100 degrees and 56% humidity at our place. That's as bad as it gets here, so it's pretty bad. Then a bit earlier this evening it had cooled to 83, but with 65% humidity.
Blech.

Still alive, but each day of heat becomes increasingly more difficult. Difficult because the house retains heat unless I can cool it off inbetween during the night time hours. That is just not happening anymore. Inside the house it was still 92 at 10 last night; this morning I only got it down to 82 before I had to close the house back up at 8 am. Not a good omen for the rest of the day to come.

I'm more worried about the animals though. Usually at 3-4 days of extreme anything weather, the weather's effect on their routines begins to show.

I've already lost fish; my old black dog is having a very tough time; and I am cautiously watching my stallion (who is the darkest color horse I own (dark bay (that's brown to non-horsey people); the rest are grey (white).

I keep checking the weather reports. Its supposed to dip slightly, isn't it?

You would assume that when it gets hotter the work load would decrease; however, around here, it's the opposite. I scurry around more.

This morning, I literally saved a fish from dying :) . I'll post more of that story on the Goldfish Fatalities thread I began day b/4 yesterday.

I hear it might cool off starting tomorrow. If the high pressure moves off of AZ.

Poor doggie. :( Gigi invites him/her over to stay in the cool house with us (if that wouldn't stress the doggie out more).

Here's hoping today is a bit cooler.

The Cookie Monster would love A/C I'm certain; except her condition is teniable. She already has difficulty getting up because of a torn ligament (old injury) in a back leg. With this horrible extra heat, she has little extra energy to fight. Yesterday, she literally pooped where she lay rather than try to get up in the heat to go potty. That's why I can't bring her inside our place. Even when the weather changes, I don't think she can handle a cold winter either. Unfortunately just a matter of time b/4 a decision will have to be made regarding her remaining quality of life :o

Appreciating the offer though. Do you think the horses can come over instead? ;)

I live at the beach (Manhattan Beach) no AC, but unfortunately there is no breeze right now.
Last night after dark the beach was packed with people, I'm sure many people preferred sitting n the dark at the beach to going home. I've never seen so many people on the beach and on the streets at 8:00pm on a Sunday night.
I've got every window and French door open right now, our third floor will be nice when the breeze comes in about an hour or two. I love the beach but I hate sitting in the sun, we have loads of company and our big umbrella is not here yet, we are fighting for shade outside. My kids who usually love the sun even want shade.

It's up to you guys at the beach to get things going.

I'm eagerly awaiting those onshore breezes from the ocean (versus those nasty desert Santa Anas).

We are dying to hear there is fog and early morning cloud cover coming at us from the coast.

Your post is bad news for us. If it isn't cool by you....it's fry-time here.

Wow, Wendi I didn't notice you were here too. What section are you in? You probably know my house, but I don't want to mention it on the BB. I already did Jamba this morning. Very crowded here.
I live near Uncle Bill's, that place is packed.
Yes, I am so done with the sun, I love living here, but hate baking in it. I walk on the Strand, but don't sit on the beach.
Our front yard is full of sand right now, compliments of my grandsons.
It is supposed to get cooler tomorrow and even cooler the rest of the week, I can't wait.
I don't have screens on my windows, normally we don't have flies or any bugs, right now one grandson has lots of mosquito bites. The flies are really bothering me, too. Oh well enough complaining, I really am happy to be here.

Our pool temperature never reaches 90 degrees, unless we keep a solar blanket on it for several days. It is now 90 degrees on September 3rd. and we haven't had the solar blanket on it the first time this summer.

It was nice yesterday, in high 80's...but expected to get back to 90's tomorrow. Sheesh.

UG! I'm here to chime in about how HOT it has been in San Diego this weekend!

We went to the Padre's Game yesterday if you can believe that. LUCKILY, our seats were in the shade. We just sucked down frozen lemonades! Sadly, all of that misery in the heat and the Pads lost :(

Today it was too hot to even go to the pool. We stayed inside and blasted the AC. I had to go outside a couple of times and it truly felt like walking into a sauna!! Hope it lets up a bit soon. The kids will roast tomorrow at school recess. Thankfully DS is in a school with AC!

I know. Actually since we moved here last July, all we've heard is, "it's not always like this" with the snow we had and then all this rain and now this "cool" summer. We're used to the heat, trust me, we came from Riverside, California! :)

We're anticipating a "cooling trend" here and they anticipate by Thursday that the high will only be 100. I can usually deal with the temperatures as we do have AC at home and work, but Friday we had a 15 hour blackout. Let's see, 85 inside, 95 outside--can't open the windows, so the inside hot, stagnant air was as bad as it gets! Try sleeping in that! NOT! I ended up propping water bottles between my neck and pillow to get a little relief from the heat.

Now you're sounding like the normal temps at my house.....94 inside has been the highest. We went without power during the heat last summer for about one day and a half. It was unbearable without fans going to circulate air. So this week, every time I saw the lights flicker for an instant and threaten to go off, I thought, Oh No, here we go again.

Yesterday, The TV news interviewed one gal in a power out area. She said to survive the heat inside her apartment, she took a shower, then fell asleep inside the shower stall.

I haven't had to resort to that one yet.....but I'm remembering it as an option.

Sadly, it's very appropriate for this paper. It's the only one in town (the San Diego version of the LA Times is just too lacking in San Diego coverage) and so the U.T. really has no incentive to be a good, decent paper. What a shame for one of the largest cities in the U.S.
