OK. I've given up on filleting the salmon we caught on our fishing trip. It's just more than I can handle. A couple of people suggested cooking them whole. I've searched and found lots of different ways to cook whole salmon, but when in doubt, I always turn to this BB. So, any tried and true recipes/methods for cooking whole salmon? TIA!

I grilled a whole salmon on a cedar plank last week and it was fabulous. It was so easy to skin and remove the bone after it was cooked. It was incredibly moist and tasty. I marinated it in Italian dressing and used hickory wood chips on the charcoal. Your only problem will be no leftovers because it is tempting to eat and eat more pieces of this treat

Margeslp--yes, we have a grill, but it is a gas one. Can you tell me more about what you did? Seasoning, marinating, how long to grill, how to use a plank, etc? I am serious when I say I know NOTHING about how to do this!

I wish I could help you with specifics. I did it totally ad lib. I marinated in Italian dressing. The directions for doing it on a plank (or two) are on the site just posted. I soaked the planks for an hour, placed it over a medium amount of hot charcoal (wish I could help more), rubbed the fish with olive oil and placed it on plank. I closed the kettle and checked it after 15 min. Since I never did it with instructions I just poked to see when it was just beginning to flake. Maybe it took 25 min. Wish I had taken notes; I just stayed handy and lucked out. I can't say there is any cedar flavor that permeates the meat and fish I have tried. I like it as a way to use "indirect heat" and use my hickory chips for flavor.

If you go to foodnetwork.com, you can see Ina Garten's salmon recipe. I haven't made it, but she uses a whole fish, & it looked really good on her show.
