Am meeting some friends for dinner at a mexican restaurant tonight. What are some healthier choices? The place we're going has great bean burritos- they aren't fried and I can get them without all the sauce on top. Is that a safe choice? Fajitas? Tacos? I'm really trying to eat healthier so any tips on making healthier choices at a mexican restaurant are greatly appreciated!

If the beans are refried beans then that's a big calorie hog. I'd go with veggie or chicken fajitas skip the sour cream and ask for extra salsa.

Also, if you get fajitas, ask for corn tortillas rather than flour - a HUGE calorie saver. I'm on Weight Watchers, and my standbys at Mexican restaurants include grilled fish or shrimp tacos ( on corn tortillas ), chicken fajitas ( w/o cheese or sour cream or guac, but WITH lots of pico de gallo and salsa ), and chicken stuffed pablano peppers (yummy!). Each of those options is reasonable and you still get Mexican flavors without really overdoing it. I warn you against margaritas which are often as much as 600 calories each - opt instead for Mexican Light Beer (Dos Equis is my fave) with lime.

Thanks for the tips. I had chicken fajitas with no sour cream or guac. Luckily, I'm already a Dos Equis fan so I tried the light version- not too bad. It was nice to get home and not be completely miserable because I overate!

Fish taco's are a great alternative to Mexican cuisine. As long as the fish is not deep fried which has happened to me, with a surprise! So make sure you ask when you order. It didn't even occur to me that a fish taco would be deep fried. How nieve could I be???? Deep fried is not low-cal, by any means!! Grilled, steamed or baked fish is very low-cal. And very tasty!!
