First, I will confess that after 20+ years, I finally bought a new mattress
OK, WOW on the sleep and comfort but ....
I think I am being POISONED!!!!!!!!!!!! Is there anything I can do short of not using my bed for a year to hurry the out-gassing. WHOA it is nasty stuff.
As I recall, maybe that is why I took so long to buy a new mattress :o :o

And what is worse, and I am only assuming, our extremely well behaved cat came into bed with us, walked all around (this was after he had been out all night and my DH let him in at 4:30 AM !!) and around and began meowing for 2 minutes straight....I got up this morning and he had used the area right next to our toilet to ..well...do the same!!
I'm wondering if that horrible mattress smell was making him mark (he went #2) the area.

Any thoughts on both matters is appreciated.

My goodness, Ana -- what kind of mattress did you buy?

If it's a tempur-pedic, I have heard that it takes a week or so for the odor to leave! I have heard of other mattresses having an odor right out of the box, so to speak, and one possibility is to sprinkle baking soda or carpet fresh on the mattress, leave it sit for a couple of hours, then vacuum it off.

Sorry, I am not a cat person, so no ideas there...

Thanks,
nope..can't do latex (allergies).
I just called the store and they said they are one of the few companies that use a natural flame retardant. They suspect it is the water-based glue in building the mattress.
holy meowies it stinks. I guess that's the glue-high people talk about?? Maybe that's why I slept so soundly :p :D

If you have a way to put it outside in the sun, that would probably help the most. If no, how about a mattress cover, the kind for dustmites?

I remember when we got our new mattress. It smelled like burning plastic - it was just horrible.

I wonder what would happen if you sprayed the mattress with Oust or Febreeze or something like that?

Do you like the smell of coffee? Coffee is an excellent deodorizer. You could place several plates or bowls filled with a little bit of fresh ground coffee on the bed or just in the room.

I bought an organic mattress. No chemicals, no smell...

I remember an awful smell when I bought my last mattress (before my tempurpedic) - it took a few months for the smell to go away.
