Some of you will remember that my "big sister" died in November 2005 -- I'd already lost my father and brother.

Sadly, my mother suffered a major stroke on Monday afternoon and died in the hospital on Wednesday. My only small consolation is in knowing how peaceful and comfortable and relaxed she looked when last I saw her, deep in some other place, reclined in her hospital bed.
Just a week ago, we tore off together into Napa for a birthday lunch for me, out on the terrace of Bistro Don Giovanni, and then off for a couple of errands. I phoned her on Sunday to thank her for the fun outing, and then got "the call" a day later.

Both siblings, both parents gone now -- just me.

I have had this happen with important people in my life too - my mother (20 years ago) and my FIL (4 years ago) and there is no overstating the pain of losing someone so unexpectedly. Like with your mother, DH and I had a wonderful trip with him (to Paris) just days before FIL passed away and that means so much that we had that wonderful time together with him and MIL. You have been so blessed to have your mother in your life as long as you did and I'm sure she has loved having you so nearby these past couple of years. Wishing you peace.
