I was at Coldwater Creek, yesterday, for their 50% off sale, and saw that they now carry Spanx! There was a table displaying them in the dressing room.

I had already tried on some slacks, and some were close to fitting, but I wanted to try them with the Spanx, so I found the size and mentioned to the fitting room person that I assumed that it was ok just to try them on over my underwear, just like any other lingerie or bathing suit. Imagine my surprise when she said that if I tried them on, I had to buy them!  How would you know what style you liked... is it worth $25 to $35 to just try them?

I put the items back and left... what would you have done? Do you think that's an ok policy or not?

My instinct is you are not crazy (since you try on bathing suits for goodness' sake) but I must admit I have no idea what a spanx is? :o

I think that is a very strange policy. How can they enforce it? What if you took them into the dressing room and DIDN'T try them on (or DID try them on) -- how would they know one way or another?

I would have done exactly as you did...put them back and left. That's a terrible policy. I've wanted to try a few styles myself, but I won't pay for the privilege. I'll just let it all hang out.

Since they come in pantyhose packaging I think it's probably pretty obvious if it's been opened.

Laura, where have you been? Spanx (www.spanx.com) are a line of shapewear that is supposed to be amazing. I really need to buy some.

I haven't seen the Spanx in packaging. Nordstrom has their Spanx stuff on hangers and they do have a tag attached but you could easily try them on. So Kay is talking about Spanx-type pantyhose???

Not saying that the ones Kay is talking about are pantyhose but the ones I've seen are packaged in the same manner.

I wonder what their return policy is on them?

All the Spanx I've seen is in packaging. In those cases it would make sense to me that they would not allow you to try them on, just as with pantyhose.

I'm not quite sure what the big deal about them is ... they are basically the same material as the "control" part of control pantyhose. So, they are NOT heavy-duty. I guess they appeal to people who want a little something to smooth, but don't want to buy even lightweight regular shapewear.

I don't know the details but from everything I've heard they are far better than other shapewear. I know JeAnne got some on the Tim Gunn show, maybe she'll stop in and help us out.

When I think of Spanx - this is what I think of and couldn't understand why you couldn't try them on.

Not that I wear pantyhose ever but may have to check out the Spanx version....

Hmmm, what a strange policy.

I have bought different types of Spanx at Nordstrom and they are not in packaging there. You can also try them on. How else would you know which ones fit right?? Strange indeed.

The ones in CC were packaged like panyhose. I had 1 leg in before the dressing room drone told me the policy - she had to go check. I repackaged them, put all the clothes back, and told her why (nicely). Just not a well-thought out policy, but it made me a little picqued!

Well, Spanx's website says they have a money-back guarantee so maybe order directly from them?

I also bought mine at Nordstrom. They are wonderful under knits. really smooth out bumps & panty lines and are quite comfortable. the sales person brought me some but I think they were on a hanger like a bra. I know I didn't have to open anything. I bought them although I don't think I'd have been obligated to, but they made the pants look 100x better.

I've been having kids. ;) With the exception of a few weddings, I can't remember the last time I had anything on that was nicer than jeans. :o

Well I will say no one ever tries on pantyhose (or do they?). Is there a chance of them stretching out?

Most places I go, you can bring them back, if they're washed...

Robyn, maybe I will try the Spanx website! Does anyone have an opinion about how hot they are? I am a hot-flash kinda gal, and I couldn't stand to be any warmer!;) That's why I was kinda afraid of the high-waist ones...

Kay -- I'm over 50 and bought a pair of spanx at CC earlier this summer to wear under the dress I wore to my DSD's wedding in July. They are light, light, light. You shouldn't have any worries in that dept. And as the dressing room clerk explained to me, "they really help contain the jiggle." I had a shimmery, shirred bottom to the dress I wore, and I really wanted my behind to look smooth. I am by no means overweight, but I AM middle-aged and can use a little "containment" in the rear department. I bought the regular panty instead of the high rise, but I can see if you have a little flab between waist and bustline, you might want to consider the high rise.

And I didn't try mine on before buying, just went by the weight/height chart on the package as I would for buying panty hose. I will admit that there was a little "slop" over the waist-line of the garment :o , but I attribute that to my figure/age, not the garment, and it didn't manifest itself in anyway in the dress I wore to the wedding. Come to think of it, I don't think I've worn them since. I maybe need to look in the mirror more often!

Well, now that is interesting! All of the Nordstroms must be different then because mine had Spanx on hangers too.

I have emailed Coldwater Creek's customer service regarding this policy... it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

Good for you!

We've had a CC for more than a year. I haven't visited yet. Was it someone here who talked about the irritating salesgirls or was that Ann Taylor's? We have that too, but I haven't stepped foot in either.

Here is the reply from Coldwater Creek's customer service! They got the right answer, and I will take this to the store manager on Wednesday... hopefully, they will still have the items I wanted.
