Hello Fellow CLers~

Welcome to the new bb! I just love it!!!

I'm curious...if you could only subscribe to one other cooking magazine beside CL what would it be and why?

Only one? Hard choice it would be Bon Appetit

Oh, man -- hard one.

Well, right now I have a subscription to Saveur that I really enjoy... but it's not ultra practical... hmmm....

Probably Vegetarian Times at this juncture!

I also would probably choose Bon Appetit or Gourmet. I've never received either of them in the past, but the Epicurious site has made me a fan! The recipes are unusual and creative - not the same old, same old.

I like to use the Epicurious site and recipes from Martha Stewart (I receive MSL)when I want to splurge (in fat and calories), but CL is my main source for everyday cooking. It's so wonderful to open a magazine and know that you don't have to worry about the nutritional content!

Well, so far I haven't found anything out there as great as Cooking Light.I've just lost 50 lbs. and have 10 more to go so I'm really hung up on the nutritional value in a recipe.I love to cook so I'm in seventh heaven with all the yummy choices they have each month. ~mary~

If Eating Well was still in publication it would get my vote. I think the real challenge for me in cooking is making healthy food taste as good as the type of food I grew up with. Almost anything tastes great with tons of salt, butter, cream, or .. name your favorite high cal. Congrats to Cooking Light for helping us improve our cooking/eating habits.

I, like Anne, miss Eating Well. And although I've been subscribing to Gourmet, I've decided I like Bon Appétit better. I've gotten a ton of great recipes from both.

I like Cuisine Magazine quite a bit. They have interesting and unusual things as well as perfected versions of the usual stuff. The pictures are wonderful, and it's not full of advertising (there is none). You can check them out on the web first at www.cuisinemag.com. (http://www.cuisinemag.com.) Their stuff isn't what you'd call low-fat, but it is beautiful, restaurant quality type dishes. I also like Cook's Illustrated. Also no advertising, but no photographs either. But the writing is excellent, and you really learn about food and the chemistry of cooking/baking, since they explain in detail how they test each recipe differently 25 times until it comes out perfect. Those are the only ones I subscribe to, but none of them compare to CL in my opinion!!!

Wow! What a coincidence! I was *just* going to site Cuisine and Cook's Illustrated myself for the exact same reasons!

I am a "back again" subscriber to Cooking Light. I started up again in November 1999 after a fews years without. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I also subscribe to Martha Stewart Living, Cook's Illustrated. Of course, I pick up Gourmet and/or Bon Appetit at the store when they look appealing http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif.

I would choose Bon Appetit for sure. In fact I have all of issues back to 1978! I just can't tear them up and get rid of them so now I have quite a collection! I also like to pick up Cooks Illustrated from time to time for specific articles. They are very thorough.

Sorry I posted this twice! I need to figure out what I am doing wrong. I apologize for cluttering the bb with duplicates. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Cooking Light get's my vote! I agree that it is a real challenge to find "healthy" recipes that satisfy. So hats off to Cooking Light for doing just that.

Bon Appetit! My vote also. But as everyone has already suggested it let me also suggest one my Mom gets: Taste of Home. She's sent me quite a few good recipes from it.

i'm weight watcher hasbeen (been there, done that, & put it back on! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif but some habits die hard, & i'm trying to get on track, so i would put my vote in for the WW mag. i might be a little brainwashed, but i won't even look at a recipe if it doesn't have the nutritional info & automatically calculate them all into points! how pathetic. ~tammy/mn

Hi
Before I get on board the magazine debate, I should probably introduce myself, My name is Cindy, and I hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I am a professional chef currently working for the Manitoba Cardiac Institute. My obssesive food passion has me cooking on and of the clock, just can'nt seem to"feed" my thirst for new recipes and friends to share them with. No pun intended.
So in response to the great debate, I think Bon appetite is an excellent magazine to cook from, and that Gourmet has some of the most interesting articles around, and yes it is ashame that Eating Well is no longer around. I am new to the board and I am looking forward to chating with anyone who is interested.

Welcome Cindy! I am fairly new here too. I appreciate the feedback from fellow members here when they try some of the recipes from CL. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Cook's Illustrated gets my vote. I call it the "consumer's Report" of the culinary world. I love this magazine because they steer me toward the best cooking gadgets on the market. Not necessarily the most expensive but the best. The recipies are not low fat at all but are consistanly excellent. The beer can chicken (believe it or not) was both good and low fat.

Although, "light cooking" is not it's focus, I have found many great recipes in Southern Living..and I live in New Jersey! Congrats on your weight loss MCJiGs!

I also really miss Eating Well and consult old issues regularly. I like Bon Appetit and Gourmet (especially Bon Appetit) also but the only cooking mag I read regularly is CL because I get tired of wanting/having to adapt things to make them healthier!

We made the beer can chicken and tried a beer can turkey while camping Memorial Day weekend. We used wine instead of beer and the chicken was delicious! the turkey was a little dry, but we were camping for goodness sake!! We will definitely make the beer can chicken again.

I also miss Eating Well. I have all the back issues going back to the Charter Issue! I wish they had published annual cookbooks ala Cooking light. Those cookbooks are really a great investment.

I didn't even know there was a ww mag. Is it any good? The only thing I've noticed about WW cookbooks is some times it does not give %of fat cal. I know I know I can figure it out myself by x the fat by 9 and then dividing into cal. but I'm... yes I'm... lazy. I love CL doing all the work for me. But, do tell is WW Mag good? ~mary~

CL is of course my favorite! I am working diligently to put my favorites in MasterCook. I do find good light recipes frequently in Shape and Fitness and will occassionally pick-up Pillsbury, etc. cookbook type magazines at the grocery because they have fast, easy recipes with nutritional information.

Any suggesstions on losing the 10 lbs from Christmas? They came on easily, but now I can't get them off. The more I try the harder it gets.

Do Bon Appetit and Gormet include the nutritional information for the recipes?

Cooking Light and Bon Appetit are my cooking mags, but I added one last year that I think was brand new then - Cooking Pleasures. It's actually part of the Cooking Club of America, and it features member recipes, product testing and reports, some wonderful, if not all light, recipes, and no ads. I've posted a few of the recipes, like the shrimp tortilla soup, Basque chicken, black bean chili. There's an espresso brownie recipe I have wanted to make, but can't bring myself to use 12 oz of bitersweet choc plus cocoa. Maybe I should ask CL if they can lighten that one.

I used to read Bon Appetit all the time, too, but I got fed up with them not including nutritional info. Some of their recipes are actually surprisingly lower in fat - but who wants to actually calculate everything themselves? I have only recently discovered CL and love it - I find it has the same kind of recipes with new, interesting ingredients but much lighter!
