Hi Everybody!
I haven't posted in a long time, but I know you all are such a wealth of information and I'm hoping you can help me out! I'm wondering if there are any school librarians on the board? I used to teach 4th grade and got so burned out in the general classroom. So I left teaching and took a job working retail. It's been 4 years, and now I'm thinking of geting back into education - but as a librarian instead of a classroom teacher. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Wouldn't you have to have your MSLS?
In our schools, we usually have a librarian who oversees the library (or, in some cases libraries - rotating schools within the district) who is a "true" librarian with a degree in teaching and, I assume, a librarian degree as well. Then we have the aides who tend to run the library day to day, but they are not certified teachers and so get paid quite a bit less.
Good luck!

In our district it depends on which school you want to be a librarian in. At the elementary and middle school level the librarian needs to be teacher certified as well as have their degree in library science. At the high school level not so much since they're not actually teaching classes at that age level. In fact, the last librarian the HS hired doesn't have a degree in library science either, but was the librarian's aide for several years and was promoted.
I've always thought being a school librarian would be the way to go. I'm looking forward to when DS is in school so that I can volunteer my time in the library.

Those jobs are very hard to come by in my district and politics usually plays a part in getting job when there is a rare opening. The librarian always seems to stay there for many years, usually until retirement.
