View Full Version : Favorite Non-Homemade Ice Cream?
Natasha

I thought for a while before deciding to post this, because I know that many of you make your own ice cream (I love my ice cream maker too) and because this doesn t necessarily have to do with eating light. Still ... it s summer - what the heck.
I read that ice cream is one of the all-time favorite desserts chosen by women, and was wondering what your favorite non-homemade kind is (I m also asking the gentlemen who frequent this board - don t want to exclude anybody.)
Your favorite could be something you buy in the grocery store, at a local ice cream shoppe, or at a chain ice cream shoppe or restaurant. Or maybe you have a favorite premium or regular ice cream and a favorite low-fat one. It could also be frozen yogurt, sorbet, gelato, or CUSTARD!! (See what you did, Cathie?).
I was never that much of an ice cream person, but am getting worse with (relative, of course) AGE. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif My favorites are Perry s peanut butter and fudge frozen yogurt, Friendly s buttercrunch ice cream, and Hojo s peppermint stick ice cream (I grew up enjoying that last one, served with a cookie, of course).
And you?

Breyers low fat chocolate yogurt. My husband loves Ben & Jerry doble chocolae (has dark chunks and white chocolate chunks & walnuts)NY ice cream....Sorbet= Hagen Daz mango
and the outmost sinful (calories) those chocolate Dove bars. (by the way they are getting smaller)

My favorite ice creams are Breyers Natural Vanilla. It is great with many different toppings. Perrydell (a local dairy farm) peanut butter ripple. The peanut butter is smooth and creamy. Hershey's peanut butter fudge. It tastes just like a piece of peanut butter fudge. I love ice cream. These are a few of my favorites.

My favorite frozen yogurt is Edy's fat free vanilla - it is so creamy you wouldn't believe it, and has lots of calcium (good for a non-milk drinker like myself). I used to think vanilla was boring, but I love to put fresh sliced nectarines/strawberries/blueberries on top in the summer! Ben & Jerry have great lowfat ice cream/yogurt. Coconut Cream Pie (lite ice cream) and Cherry Garcia (lowfat froz. yogurt) are the faves in our house. All the Haagen-Dazs sorbets are very good. For premium/chain ice cream, Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge and Chocolate-Peanut Butter are heaven.....................is it obvious I'm an ice cream junkie? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Ever tried Haagen Dazs Dulce de Leche? It's nothing but pure cream and vanilla, swirled through with luscious caramel....so simple, and yet so sinful..

Mine would have to be Mayfield's Moose Tracks.
Angelina--I have tried Dulce de Leche--yummy! If you want to take it one step further, make an ice-cream sandwich by putting some slightly softened Dulce de Leche between two oatmeal cookies(I used Archway), wrapping it in plastic wrap, and putting it back in the freezer to harden.
Here in Texas, Blue Bell is the royalty of ice creams. Their new Moo-llenium Crunch is a new favorite, with Strawberries and Homemade Vanilla, Natural Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Almond Marshmallow, Dutch Chocoalte, Cookies and Cream and Mocha Almond Fudge all getting favorites votes around here (get the feeling we're not all that picky?). My 4 yr old only eats Mint Chocolate Chip (the green kind). Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, but we bought their book and last time we had it, we made it at home.

What is Moo-llenium crunch? [Showing ignorance again.] Would it go well with stale Peeps?

Ice cream is one of those things that I feel no need to make at home - going out with the kids in summer to our local ice cream shop is part of the fun of ice cream. Plus, that way I eat it once and don't have something in the freezer trying to tempt me!
My favorites are:
Pralines N' Cream - from Baskin & Robbins
Moosetracks - from our local shop
Fudge Brownie Sundae - from Ben & Jerry's (where I used to live in Bethlehem, PA, they had a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop, but haven't seen one of those in a while!)
And when I'm being good (or better) - golden vanilla yogurt from TCBY.
Yummy!

Well, Breyers vanilla got wrecked for me when I read the label and saw that it has more fat and calories than many premium chocolate ice creams. It only worked when I felt it was a lower fat alternative!
Favorites--Edy's chocolate anything. Ben and Jerry's Coconut (something, can't remember) and the old standby Black Raspberry from a local shop, w/sprinkles.

My #1 is Turkey Hill Chocomint Chip. It reminds me of being little (3-5)and going to a dairy bar for ice cream. (When I can't get this Baskin Robbins Chocolate Mint chip is the next best thing!)
My #2 is Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie~delicious! I can eat the whole carton when I'm pregnant!
#3 is Breyer's Vanilla Bean~the best vanilla in the whole world according to me!
#4 is Ben and Jerry's Purple Passion sorbet~love the tartness of this and the color!
I could probably keep going... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My favorite, and my husband's favorite is Turkey Hill chocolate chip mint!
(That is so funny, Susan, that it's your favorite, too. My name is also Susan)
I recently bought the chocolate chip mint ice cream sandwiches by Turkey Hill. They are good, but they leave us wanting more ice cream! Dangerous. I also bought Checkered Flag Sundae recently for my husband since he's a big Nascar fan- and he races his own street stock locally. It's chocolate and vanilla ice cream with little white and dark fugde filled chocolate race cars (Jeff Gordon cars- #24). Edy's makes it and the proceeds (supposedly) go to charity.
If we go out for ice cream, we tend to get soft vanilla with some kind of topping- butterscotch and caramel are my favorites, but I also like strawberries- don't forget the sprinkles!
Oh, hey, wow, just noticed that I am now a member. That was fast!

Ben & Jerry's Phish Food has got to be my ultimate indulgence! It's chocolate ice cream with swirls of caramel and marshmallow and little chocolate fudge fish! Yum!
Otherwise, I just go for Haagen-Dazs or Breyers vanilla and make sure I have some berries or fruit pie to go with it.
lindrusso - Ben & Jerry's has a website: benjerry.com. I'm sure you can use it to find a shop near you!

While we're on the subject of ice cream...
I forgot to mention that I keep Klondike's Ice Cream Sandwiches (not the orginal chocolate coated thing) on hand when I want something sweet and don't want to over-indulge.
They are pretty big and are only 200 calories and 7 grams of fat - I couldn't believe it! They're certainly not premium ice cream quality, but they satisfy my sweet cravings without making me feel guilty!!
I noticed a bunch of them in my mom's freezer after I told her about them!

Mrs. Reber (Susan)~
Glad to meet another Turkey Hill fan! I will have to give the Turkey Hill ice cream sandwiches a try per your recommendation. I recall that you liked the Good Seasons dressing mixes too!

Mmmm... I'm in love with Edy's Dreamery icecream. I haven't had a bad flavor yet, but I've developed a slight obsession for New York Strawberry Cheesecake (and if I could just find Chili-Chili around here, I would scream with joy!!).
I'm also a loyal devotee of B&J's Cherry Garcia.
Edy's lemon sorbet is also outstanding (I eat it with fresh blueberries on top; my husband eats it with Hershey's syrup!!)
But, my one love is a simple chocolate fudgesicle -- rapt with the memories of 90 degree childhood days and the joy of guiltless pleasures.

Susan- yes that was me who loves the Good Seasons dressings. Actually, the one I really really love is the Zesty Italian. The best! With olive oil and red wine vinegar. Maybe there's something with the name Susan??
Anyhow, the Turkey Hill peanut butter swirl ice cream sandwiches are actually my favorite. The only problem is that they're not bigger! The problem I have with the chocolate chip mint is that after I eat one sandwich, I want a whole bowl full of chocolate chip mint ice cream. (Must learn control). My local supermarket has had them on sale for the past month- 2 boxes for $5. How can one resist?

I LOVE icecream-lowfat and frozen yogurt only though-since I eat a very low fat diet, the regular icecreams taste too rich for me.
Anyway, my favorites are:
Dairy Queen-choc and vanilla swirl,
Breyers, low fat mint chip, French Chocolate or neopolitin frozen yogurt
TCBY white chocolate mousse.

Attention Ice Cream Freaks, If you are ever in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I invite you to visit one of our local frozen custard stands. My web friend Lorilei and I disagree on the best custard stand (The Kopp's v Leon's debate can tear families apart here), but we are completely agreed that no ice cream comes close.
Unfortunately, I can't afford those calories anymore, so Leon's is a rare treat. To keep up my frozen confection intake (it IS one of the 4 basic food groups isn't it?), I rely on Hagen Daz Chocolate or Mango Sorbet. Ben and Jerry's has/had a great Devil's Food Sorbet, but I haven't seen it lately at my grocery. I'm also a fan of Edy's Grand Lite Vanilla as a base for bittersweet hot fudge sauce (assuming I'm willing to wait and don't eat the hot fudge out of the jar)

Ooooh, what's summer without ice cream? I love frozen custard down the shore. At home, Edy's or Breyer's vanilla with a variety of toppings. Starbuck's is good, too. My all-time favorite, which they don't make anymore, is Haagen-Daz deep chocolate-peanut butter. It was to die for; don't know why they stopped making it.

I, too, am a frozen custard fan. I grew up in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, so the regular weekend treat was to go to Gilles frozen custard stand and have a fabulous cone or sundae. My favories are a hot fudge sundae covered in bananas, the "Gille" cookie, and the chocolate soda. Now living in Madison, I can satisfy my custard craving at Culver's or Michael's.
I also like the Babcock ice cream. It's made at the university, and they sell it out of Babcock Hall on campus as well as a few other little stores. The Peanut Butter Chocolate is sinful! As for store-bought brands, I like Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Chunky Monkey. Oh, I'm getting hungry! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Danielle,
I lived in Madison for 8 yrs.(college and medical school). When I took my husband there, we went to babcock hall to get ice cream. It's great stuff. And dirt cheap! Makes me homesick!( I grew up in a suburb north of Milwaukee-Bayside).
Regarding my favorites now(East coast); at the grocery store it's usually Turkey Hill. I agree with the chocolate mint chip vote and the ice cream sandwiches. I also like their orange vanilla swirl frozen yogurt. Occasionally I diverge for Edy's cookie 'n cream yogurt. When we go out we go to a local dairy store called Stew Leonard's for soft serve ice cream and yogurts. My boys call it the "Moo cow store!" The ice cream is good-nothing outstanding, but the store is alot of fun for the kids.

Unfortunately, I'm not picky about ice cream. The only one we can keep in the house is coffee because I don't do coffee. Otherwise, look out!
My favorite, though, has to be any flavor Dove Bars. They are so rich and sinful! They do keep making them smaller though. Pretty soon they'll be considered low-fat!

I love summer!!!!! Since the weather in Dallas has been unbearably hot, I love to indulge in my favorites:
Ben & Jerry's Bovinity Divinity (White chocolate ice cream with milk chocolate cows, swirled with chocolate ice cream with white chocolate cows)
Dove's Dulce de Lece
Of course, no summer would be complete without Blue Bell ice cream. My favorites are Pecan Pralines and Cream, Vanilla and Cookies and Cream.

This reminds me of something funny my father used to say... Whenever we'd come close to the Ambrosia Chocolate factory in downtown Milwaukee, he'd throw back his head and take a big whiff of the rich chocolate smell.
"That smell is so thick, you could pick it out of your nose and eat it... hey?" he would say.
(Crude, I know. But the smell is almost that thick... and kids will laugh at anything)

Oh, lord! I have never been pregnant and I can eat a whole carton of Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough if I don't monitor myself! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif
I also like Bryer's chocolate and I LOVE Hunter's Chocolate Satisfaction. Last time I got it I made myself get the mini carton (smallest carton I have ever seen - it was about one portion but I made it last for about three servings)!
My favorite good-for-me ice cream is Healthy Choice vanilla or oreo cookies flavor. My husband and I have a cup of that nearly every night after dinner.

Ok, it isn't really ice cream, but my vote is for Starbucks frappacinos ( I butchered the spelling, I think). The mocha ones are my favorite. I really think I could live off of them!

Considering that ice cream is a staple with me in the summer it's hard to pick, but I'll give it a try. Ben & Jerry's Chocolate chip cookie dough, Baskin & Robbins Chocolate Peanut Butter, Klondike ice cream sandwiches and Drumstick sunday cones. My favorite good for me ice cream is a toss up, Haagen Daas Coffee fat free yogurt and Healthy Choice Mocha (something or other, it has pieces of biscotti in it) and I agree with Susan I love Starbucks Frappacino's I put them in the freezer til they freeze to a slush and they are wonderful.

Yes, I also agree Turkey Hill ChocoMint Chip is incredibly tasty! I also like the Tin Roof Sundae. I ususally buy Edy's. I like the Espresso Chip, Ice Cream Sandwhich and Girl Scouts Thin Mint. I agree - there are no bad flavors of Edy's Dreamery... trouble is the containers are too small..... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I also love Starbucks icecream. YUM!! They have a really yummy dulce de leche if you are looking to try one....
Of course, all icecream is merely the vehicle for my Magic Shell addiction..... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Moo-llenium Crunch is a lightly carmeled vanilla ice cream base (made with brown sugar)with caramel and chocolate chunks, almonds, pecans and waltnuts. Apparently Blue Bell had planned to make it a special 3-month release at the start of the year, but it has become so popular that they are continuing it. In fact, my mom asked me to draft a petition to make it a permanent flavor. Blue Bell told her it is already one of their top 3 or 4 flavors, passing everything but Homemade Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate and Cookies and Cream. It may not be necessary, but it might be fun to send them a petition.

If I'm being a good girl its got to be Edy's Lowfat Blackberry Pie. It has chunks of pie crust and blackberry swirl. If I'm being a bad girl it has to be Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby. That's vanilla icecream with swirls of chocolate and peanut butter AND chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels. Needless to say this one is for times when I'm feeling VERY NAUGHTY!!!

-Pink Bubble Gum
-Choc. Chip Cookie Dough
Also:
-Anything from Braums

I don't consider myself an ice cream expert, however when the craving is there, I love the following:
Ben & Jerrys: Chunky Monkey
Cherry Garcia
Haagen Daz: any of their sorbets
Baskin Robins: Grape Ice

SandyDee - I know there is one in Youngstown, OH (the original store, I think, from 1945 or so). Don t know if that s close to you at all... There may be others in OH but when I just tried to check the website, it was down. It s http://www.handelsicecream.com . The one I go to is in the Pittsburgh area and I don t get to go close to as often as I would like. I can tell you, though, that I ve probably tried every PB kind they have, plus others (and they were all yummy).
I have also read about so many good ice cream flavors on this thread that I ve never tried and would like to!

I go for Haagen-Daz Chocolate Sorbet---it's really chocolaty and LOW fat. When I'm really bad, I go for Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby---it has salty pretzel pieces that make it addicting!

Starbucks low-fat latte. Oh my gosh it's good! I had never thought about trying it until I saw it in several CL recipes. I used it in the Mocha fudge parfait recipe and it was wonderful! But the icecream alone is great too.
