Well, I'm back at my ole message board after a long and exhausting move; and since our mail is being forwarded, I'm paranoid that I'm missing my CL magazine. We've gotten little or no mail in our new place. Has anyone received August?

Nope Jennifer my August isn't here. I don't expect it for at least another week to 10 days. Hope your move went well.

I promise I am not trying to start a riot, but I got my August CL TODAY. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, though.

Got it last week...but we all know they can come at different times for different areas!

Yes, I guess I should get a subscription for CL, but I have too much fun stalking all the newsstands in the neighbourhood, and carrying off my prize issue of CL in triumph when I finally get my hands on it..

Just got mine in yesterday's mail. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I haven't even taken it out of the plastic yet-I like the anticipation to build!

Angelina - funny you should mention that... I see my quest for CL as being a similar adventure, and I'm not sure I would get the same "rush" if I had a subscription http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I do the same thing! I love my mid-month ritual.
Oh! This has nothing to do with the August issue, but - http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif - I find myself wanting to use the smilie icons in E-mail messages now. I have been spoiled for Ultimate Bulletin Board bells and whistles. Anyone else find themselves searching for http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif , http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif , http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif , and so on when you write regular E-mail messages, or is it just me? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Well, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who scours the magazine stores for the newest issue of Cooking Light! It makes my day when I see a gleaming new issue on the stands! However, I have broken down and decided to subscribe...it is less expensive that way, and now I can look forward to the end of the day when I go home and check my mail!

Got my August issue yesterday, too! What's with all the cheesecakes again? Anyway, I love my subscription because it's always great to come home at the end of the day and see a new issue in my mailbox! It is also less expensive. The only thing I don't like is the 500 renewal notices I keep getting- even though my subscription is good for another year or so!

I received mine yesterday, along with a renewal notice (renewal notice? I subscribed to it two months ago, and I'm already getting a renewal notice? This is why I hate subscribing to magazines). Quickly went through it yesterday, and did notice the plethora of cheesecake recipes.

okay, so it's not just me being tormented with renewal notices? I think my subscription is good well into next year. I've been a subscriber for over 5 years now and I love the magazine. It has improved so much from when I first subscribed, but when I pay for a 2 year subscription, I would think the renewal notices wouldn't come for a while.

I personally am enjoying my August issue. I don't mind seeing more cheesecakes - it's the only dessert I like. It does have a lot of other good recipes in it too. Can't wait to try them. (If I ever get done with June, that is.)

My August issue arrived in the mail today. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I to am glad to see I am not the only one who gets renewal notices all the time. I had two of my friends at work sign up for the two free issues CL offers on the internet & they both got bills before the first issue arrived. But, I still love my magazines!
I had problems with renewal notices too. Contacting the mag via email helped. I had subscribed for 2 years and then got a notice. Egads.
Anyone know why the store gets the magazine before we do?

Haven't received mine yet. As for the renewal notices---they are soooo annoying. Especially when you know your subscription doesn't have to be renewed for awhile. I even sent them an email to stop sending me renewal notices until 2 or 3 monhts before mine expires. Didn't hear back from them....but now that I think about it, I haven't received a renewal notice in awhile. Hmmmmm

Yes!!! Today was the day! I have it here, shiny and new, my precious issue of CL fresh from the newsstand! Yippee!!!!!

Call the customer service number (800-336-0125) or send CL and e-mail (here or at cookinglight@spc.com). They should be able to tell you which issue you will start with. Also, if you buy August and then receive it, I think they would probably credit you with one issue. I've had that happen with one of my magazines. Hope that helps.

I haven't yet received my August CL; that's OK, I'm still working on June's! It should be interesting to see when I get a renewal notice; I signed up for multiple years; then got notified that my Weight Watchers magazine was being discontinued, and the balance would be transferred to CL! THEN they announced a new Weight Watchers magazine, and wanted me to subscribe to THAT!

I haven't received the August issue yet and I see that Angelina has already gotten her's at the newsstand! Does anyone else find that annoying? I'm happy for Angelina, but I think that as subscribers we should receive ours before the newsstands do. I always thought that was one of the perks to buying a subsription.

I got my CL subscription by filling out one of those annoying attachments to my Visa bill. It bills the credit card twice a year, and is a continuous subscription. Two big pluses: no renewal notices ever, and I always get my magazine in the mail on time or early. It doesn't come in plastic - just a paper cover that advertises the CL cookbook du jour, which I always tear off. Didn't someone from CL say they suspected the late issues were the ones that were sent in plastic with the renewal notices? I wonder if some of you would have more success if you talked to CL about a continuous subscription?

I didn't subscribe directly with the magazine, but through a subscription service. I do get them in pastic covers and I always get them after I see them in the stores. I don't pay the full subscription price normally advertised, so maybe I'm penalized for paying less.
I guess not all subscriptions are alike! Interesting.....

I live in central PA and have not received my August issue yet. I too have often wondered why I don't get mine at home before it hits the stores. But this has recently started happening with two other magazines that I subscribe to. If it wasn't for the cost, I would just buy them in the store.
I'm like a kid waiting for a package from Santa- I plan an evening around going through the magazine and sipping wine. Wish my magazine was here. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
PS Mine don't come in plastic, just the heavy paper cover.

Oh CathyPA, I'm just like you....I can't WAIT to get my August issue! I have a dog that barks when the mailman comes, and when I hear that bark, I go RUNNING to the door (just like the dog!) in hopes that the new issue is here....I'm still waiting!! And I have subscribed for almost 10 years straight, as well as buy the CL binders and software diskettes/downloads (used to be to the tune of $13/month - now that I can download the cookpacs it's down to $7.00/month, but that's still a lot!!) You'd think I'd really get preferential treatment, but alas, it seems there is no rhyme or reason to their mailing methods....

No, I haven't received my Aug. issue but am looking forward to getting it soon, hopefully!
I still haven't received my August issue. I noticed it on the newsstands in the airport as I was returning from Boston on Wednesday. I figured it would be waiting for me when I got home, but no such luck. I was beginning to worry that my copy of the magazine had been lost somehow.

Hooray! -- I got my August issue today, and it's wonderful. Never mind the cheesecakes; tomorrow I'm going to make the whole-wheat spaghetti with arugula, and then I'll make the Mexican bulgur salad with citrus-jalapeno vinaigrette, and then....
Pardon me. Must go get napkin. Drool is about to get into keyboard. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I got mine today, too. Must be Ohio's turn. I think it is so ironic that y'all are talking about the stores getting it before the subscribers. I just said that the other day when I saw it in the stores and I still didn't have mine. What's with that??? I love getting mine in the mail. It's like coming home to a present at the end of a tough day. I get so excited when it's there that I won't even open it until I can give it my undivided attention.
Note to Natasha: I agree with being spoiled over the animated smiley's. I was sending an e-mail to a friend the other day and without thinking entered the code for one and then realized (too late) that I couldn't do that. Too bad cause they are so much fun. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
Got my August issue this past week but timing is always a bit inconsistent. The meatloaf is awesome 'cept I used ground turkey.

LOL! You guys are so funny! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif. I know we all get our magazines at different times, & I admit I am jealous when anyone says they have theirs; especially before ME!! The plus to subscribing-is the savings & I have had to do "the hunt" around the neighborhood newsstands many times also. It's like getting a present in the mailbox when it comes in-it's mine! (that &-nobody else sends me anything as good nowadays!). Have a good day everyone! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Zinnia

I'm another one who eagerly waits for her "present" to come in the mail. Usually I have mine by now (DC area) but not yet. Wah! I came home from 2 grueling weeks of business travel just knowing it would be there for me. I was doomed to disappointment. Maybe today?
On the bright side, I didn't notice a new issue in the grocery store either. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

cook pacs? Downloads? Huh? Does this mean they sell something so I don't have to tear out the pages and manually enter the recipes I like into Mastercook?????
I am so behind on entering recipes it isn't even funny.
No, I have NOT received my CL. Brown cover.

Yes Kristi, I have every single CL Magazine recipe on Diskette since 1995. I have been collecting the magazines since 1991, but the software wasn't available since the beginning, and I didn't start getting the software/diskettes until 1995, so I've been typing in by hand here and there when I have time the recipes from 1991 through mid 1995. The diskettes used to cost $12.98/month. Then, last year (I think - that's when I found it, at least), I found you could download the Cookpacs from www.cookn.com (http://www.cookn.com) for $6.98, and then I copy them to a diskette. I then take my magazine, pop in my diskette, and go through each recipe that I like/think I might make. I highlight it, and when I'm done, I hit "OK", and it downloads only those that I've highlighted into my Cooking Light Software (I don't have Mastercook, but the cookpacs work for Mastercook too). Then, when I want to search for say, zucchini recipes, I type in zucchini, and get only recipes I've actually looked at in the magazine and decided at one point that I would like it. It's expensive, but it's one of my hobbies, and as hobbies go, it's peanuts (anyone's husband golf? How much does THAT cost??!!). Cookn.com also sells "whole year" cookpacs for those of you that are behind..... hee hee

Grace, What a great idea!! Does one cookpac fit on one floppy disk or do you need a zip drive. Or can you copy onto a cd? Man do I have a lot to learn. And not just about cooking! Thanks for the info.

OOOH Grace, you are a such a resource! I've been considering the purchase of cooking software, especially after reading the thread on the topic. However, I was wondering if and how it can be updated. You have convinced me that it's a worthwhile purchase. I will buy software very soon, think I'm going with the Mastercook.
Thanks http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
PS Unfortunately, stillll waiting for my August issue http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif At least I'm hearing some recipe reviews that have me salivating (sp?).

Woohoo! Finally got August today. I was seething at the gorcery store as I eyed the new issue on the newstand. I was muttering to my husband as we walked out to get the mail that I was going to cancel my subscription if my CL wasn't there today. And it was there! Lucky for them, I muttered as I gleefully ripped off the cardboard cover.
Not that I will actually cancel - I still prefer getting it in the mail to picking it up in the store. Looks pretty good. Will have to try some of the pastas, the meatloaf, and at least one of those cheesecakes.
I echo Grace's enthusiasm about the Cookpacs. I love them. I love having all of the current recipes in MasterCook so I can post them here, search them, etc., without all the work of typing them in. Grace, I do like your idea of only putting the ones you think you will make/have made already made into Mastercook. However, I find that I frequently find myself making a recipe from a few months ago that I would not have dreamt of making when I first read the issue. I think that phenomenon would increase as time goes on and ideas/tastes change. I love to sort a whole year by category and then just scroll through looking at what catches my eye. Anyway, I would never dream of pre-selecting just because I love the sheer volume of recipes I have in my CL collections and love the options I have when I sit down to scroll through and pick out a menu. Just another point of view on using the cookpacs...

You know Laura, now that I'm so addicted to this darn Bulletin Board, and I am on this "newfound kick" to cook all this stuff I would never have dreamt of before, I started thinking about exactly what you just said! I started wondering about all the recipes I didn't think I'd like 5 years ago - compared to what I like now!!! What am I missing??!!! The good news is that it doesn't take much effort to pop the old diskette back in and scroll back through to search for stuff I may have passed up before, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe I shouldn't just go ahead and download the whole darn thing each month! I guess I'll
have to kick that one around a little more!
SandyDee, each Cookpac fits onto one diskette - you don't need a zip drive (unless you wanted to put several cookpacs onto one disk). I would imagine you could copy it onto a CD if you have a writeable CD drive. I usually download them to my C: drive, then copy to a blank diskette, delete it from my C: drive and file the diskettes in a box (now I wish I had a Zip drive - I have about 50 diskettes now!!)
And Kristi - Congrats!! You should have played the lottery today...

I'm confused. I just visited the CookPac site, and it seems that the recipes come on Cookware (a cooking software). I don't want to load another cooking software program (I already have Mastercook CL), so what if I just want the recipes. Can I export them to Mastercook? I'm not at all familiar with export/inport feature. Also, how long does it take to download them to your C drive?
Thanks,

Kentgirl - the cookpac site must not make it obvious, but the recipes are ready to load into MasterCook. I use MasterCook with the cookpacs. You just follow the download instructions that you get after you buy the cookpac, then go into your MasterCook and go under "File" and choose "open" and then you find the location of the cookpac you just downloaded and choose "open." MasterCook will create a cookbook with those recipes and prompt you to name it. I name it the month and year so it is obvious. Also, I have created a cookbook for 2000, 1999, etc. After MC makes the new cookbook for the cookpac I just downloaded, I copy all of those recipes, paste them into the appropriate yearly cookbook and then go back and delete the monthly cookbook. You may like a separate cookbook for each month, but it was too many cookbooks for me! Anyway, it is really easy. If you have more problems with it, ask away - one of us will surely be able to help.
I don't recall it taking very long to download onto the c drive, maybe 5 minutes tops.
