View Full Version : Food-Theme Music?

Natasha

This is the sequel to my dinner music question http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

A friend and I were talking about how there have been lots of songs with food-related titles or lyrics. Sometimes they don t REALLY have to do with food, but the connection is there. Which food-themed songs/music (if I can call them that) come to your mind? It could be pop, country, oldies (e.g., My Boy Lollipop) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif, retro (e.g., Hungry Heart), even classical without lyrics (e.g., the Nutcracker), or anything else. You get the idea. Hope to have some fun with this topic! Back to work now...

Ani DiFranco sings a song entitled "32 Flavors", which of course evokes images of Baskin Robbins http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Doesn't Harry Connick Jr sing a song called: "Recipe for Making Love"?

And what about "IceCream"? (sung by a variety of people, but most memorably by Sarah McLachlan)

I'VE TAKEN THE GRAPHIC. AND IT'S NOT COMING BACK UNTIL I LEARN HOW TO DO THIS PROPERLY!!!

Lo - thank you for playing! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Maybe we are the only two people who have been corrupted by food to the extent that we sometimes draw connections between music and food? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
BTW, what is the graphic you posted? Are you pulling a Mamasue? I can t open it and am soooo curious.

oh, natasha, how sad... I wonder if it's a browser difference. (I'm using Netscape)

It just says "ICECREAM HEADACHE" in a myriad of rainbow colors. Very sorry you can't make it out.

Lorilei, I'm using Netscape too, but I can't get the graphic either. Now I really, really want to see it. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif Can you try re-attaching it, maybe?

(I've attached graphics before -- anyone notice if it didn't work?)

I've removed the graphic to avoid further humiliation... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Yikes! How old am I that Hungry Heart is retro?? Hmm, I like the topic, but I can't think of too many. How about Amore?? When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie?? Or She's my Cherry Pie, if you're into those hair bands of the late 80's. Oh, and there's actually one that I really love- Cook of the House by Wings where Linda McCartney sings. That's from the mid 70's. I still love that song- "no matter where I serve my guests, they seem to like the kitchen best". How many of you know that one?

P.S. I can't see the graphic either!

Hmmm . . . have to think about this one! The first thing that came to mind was "Does the bubble gum lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight" but gum's not really food. How about Sugar Sugar by the Archies; the Candy Man (Sammy Davis Jr) or the one that starts "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore" (I think the title's That's Amore). I'll think of more as I'm falling asleep tonight!

Probably - Elvis is kind of an honorary icon for this topic anyway because when I think of him I almost automatically think of food ... specifically, I start craving anything peanut butter & banana http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

BTW, your graphic (ahem) incident made me LOLUGH (laugh out loud until got headache). Oh, well, better than an ICE CREAM HEADACHE!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Thanks for the laugh http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thanks, Ohioan, Barbara and MrsReber, for playing! I don t know a lot of the songs you mentioned. Something to look for! BTW, your party gifts are in the mail! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

How about "Jambalaya an' a crawfish pie, an' a file gumbo..." or "Shrimpboats Are A-Coming"?

Or some '30s and '40s songs (I swear, I got these from my mother! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif) "One Meat Ball" and "Drinking Rum and Coca Cola"

"You're the Cream in My Coffee"?

And speaking of hot dogs, "Hot Diggety Dog Diggety Boom What You Do to Me..."

Hey, this is fun! Almost as much fun as Lorilei's graphic! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif But I have a feeling that I'm dating myself, even without my mother's contributions from the 30s. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

The Beatles' song - Savoy Truffle. Not only the song title, but most of the lyrics are food.

Lorilei - that's a crackup - Hot Dogs? As in "I ain't nothin' but..."?

I m going to add a couple of others but will try to keep it brief:

Hungry Eyes
Watermelon Crawl (Don t drink and drive - do the watermelon crawl - or something like that. It is crawl, right??)
Better than a Biscuit (John Berry)
Mellow Yellow (weeeellll, it is a drink)
Breakfast at Tiffanys

Hmmmm...lets see

BarbaraL..you are in my element. I remember those songs you listed, especially the wacky bubble gum one. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

How about "Poke Salad Annie" by Elvis
"Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie"
"Strawberry Fields" by the Beatles
"Days of Wine and Roses"...does that count as food related?
"Brown Sugar"....(daugther contributed this one)
"Two Pina Coladas" by Garth Brooks

LoriL....I saw your graphic at the other thread...Good Job Girl! The bad thing is that it appears and disappears! Weird. The problem is not with you. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Oh, and its nice to see someone following my foot steps! That's because I was obviously thinking about food when I wrote it. You got to it before I edited. It's Savoy Truffle (White Album)

How about "Tequilla"; "Sugar Shack"; "Bread & Butter"; Tea for Two; Yes we have no bananas; Tea and sympathy; and didn't Herb Albert have one called "Honey" I know the album was called "Whipped Cream". Yes I really did date myself. I know there are more. I have to keep thinking. I had one more and it just went completely out of my head. Hee Hee, how about "never on Sundae" (just kidding, I must still be on the ice cream thread)
Just thought of a few more: Peppermint twist; Brown Sugar; 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall (Oh, like you never heard of it); and really how remote do you want me to get. There was an old Disney movie from the days of Annette as a teenager and she sang a song called "meetin at the malt shoppe" (I'm really not as weird as that makes me sound, it's just that it was recently on Disney and I remembered it), And then there is the Banana Boat song. Help, I can't stop!!!

Yes, Yes....Taste of Honey by Herb Albert.

LauraEllen, Are you thinking of Strawberry Fields or is Strawberry Truffle another song? I could go for some strawberry shortcake right now...hmmmmm...is that a song too? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Wasn't there a song that went something like...your the frosting on my cake... or was it candles?

Did anyone mention some of Jimmy Buffet's songs yet? I know he sings Cheeseburger in Paradise, Grapfruit Juicyfruit and Margaritaville.

I think Neil Diamond has a song called Crunchy Granola.

I just thought of some more!
"If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake"; "That's nice, don't fight, have a piece of fruit"; and "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme."

Whee! I'm on a [cinnamon] roll! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Is it pushing the envelope too far to add "Mairsey Doats"? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

I LOVE this thread. My friends tell call me the Queen of music trivia. Here are a few that I have thought of "Tea in the Sahara" by the Police, "Black Coffee In Bed" by Squeeze,"Rasberry Beret" by Prince (sorry, everyone, the computer doesn't have an icon for his new name !!!), Ice Cream Castles by the Time..

Yikes, I better stop myself before I get REALLY obscure!

Wait-one more "Spill the Wine", but I don't recall who sings it.

One of the lesser known albums, where virtually every song has a food connection, is Viva La Woman by Cibo Matto. Cibo Matto is a Japanese group that records in English, and the one song off the album that you may have heard was "Sugar Water" which was used as theme music on Dawson's Creek (or so I am told.) The album is worth a listen, if only to hear how food is interpreted through Japanese culture, and the lyrics are a riot. The music's not bad either. Their follow-up album, Stereotype A (for Asian), has been highly critically acclaimed, so the first album may be more readily available in the stores. Be sure to listen to "Birthday Cake" and "Artichoke". Fascinating stuff.

Since ice cream is my passion, along with Sarah McLachlan, I love the song "Ice Cream." Had it played at our wedding for my husband.

I also like "32 Flavors," but I prefer the version sung by Alana Davis.

And what about that song, "If you like Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain..."

[groan] oh, man -- but I have to hand it to you that that was clever!... and I thought I was the only one in the universe who remembered that "Shrimpboats" tune http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

What about that tune "Clouds in my Coffee"?
Or "In the Big Rock Candy Mountain"...
Did any one mention the reggae favorite [*ouch*] "Red Red Wine"?

And didn't Prince sing a song entitled "Cream"?? (Or doesn't that qualify, since he probably wasn't referring to food?)

All these suggestions gave me an idea for a dinner party-each guest has a course that she is in charge of. Then she has to bring food for her assigned course which is in a song. There are so many possibilities!!!

Of course, I don't know if my husband will play. I have a hard enough time with the Country of the Month !! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

MrsReber
07-26-2000, 09:29 AM
Oh, yes, Squeeze! I love them! By the way, I heard recently that Prince is back to his real name of Prince now. The change all had to do with some contract dispute. What a weirdo he turned out to be! Yes, Clouds is my coffee is part of "you're so vain" by Carly Simon. And I know the Beatles tune, too, (have the cd) just couldn't remember the name yesterday!

Escape (The Pina Coloda Song) is the one you're thinking of, Danielle! One hit wonders.

Then there's always MacArthur Park (ack- disco!!!) "someone left the cake out in the rain!"

This is a very challenging topic. Susann, once again, you and I are in sync- I have a vast music collection from White Zombie to Anne Murray. I love music trivia and try to stay in touch with the music scene. Must be something with that name....

I am also a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan- do they count??

Natasha
07-26-2000, 09:49 AM
Sure, band names can count too - why not?

What about American Pie and [groannnn] the Chicken Dance music! (Insert Mamasue's graphic from way back when with the chicken hopping around - anyone remember that one?) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Susann

The Soup Dragons were around in the late 80's, early 90's alternative era. Let's see, they did "Divine Thing" and "Running Wild". Then they disappeared.

Mary Had a Little Lamb, huh? That is kind of funny.

Ah, wait! I've got it! Scarborough Fair! You know, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Oh Good, Names of groups. How about "Bread"? and isn't there a new age group called the Cranberries? How about the old songs Rum and Coca Cola and "Let's do the Mashed Potatoes"? Then there is a song by Wayne Toupes and Zydecajun called Toupello Honey (probably butchered the spelling on that one.) Does anyone know the old favorite "On top of Spaghetti?"
(Tell me that isn't just an Ohio thing.) And who among us can forget Shirley Temple's stirring rendition of "Animal Crackers in my Soup"?

Susann love the dinner party idea. Natasha, I do have the soundtrack of that Disney movie... Just kidding. But wouldn't it be a hoot!?! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

Yep, that soundtrack would be a hoot. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Here are a couple more:
I just bought a tape that I'm really looking forward to hearing: Gravity by Jesse COOK. Does THAT count?! Don't see why not!
Oh, and for bands - how about Fine Young Cannibals? (Ick!)

This all reminds me of a calendar or book I saw with misunderstood lyrics to songs. I believe it was called "When a Man Loves a Walnut". http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Anyone else see that?

My favorite misunderstood lyric has always been from Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. Someone thought he was singing "Scuze me while I kiss this guy"!

I remember On Top of Spaghetti, too! Not just in Ohio!

I also remember Tupello Honey (don't know how to spell it either!) but the version I have is by Van Morrison. Does anyone remember "Eat Me I'm a Danish"? (sung to the tune of "Rock Me Amadeus"? )

Okay, now here's a real stretch for the music buffs- does anyone know Big Audio Dynamite? They were also part of the alternative culture in the late 80's early 90's (college radio) and they had a song called, I think, "Defcon 4" and it one part that repeated was "give me big mac, fries to go, big mac, fries to go, big mac, fries to go, gimme big mac, gimme fries to go". Okay, so I have some weird cd's. I am a product of college in the late 80's, early 90's. I am searching my brain for a song by The Cure- there's a couple where they reference food, but I can't recall any titles.

There's also a band that plays in this area called Jimmy's Chicken Shack. And what about "I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill". Tis the season!

And, of course, there's always Led Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song"....

Spill the wine! I missed that one before, Susann. Didn't see it there- Good one! What an odd song that is!

Okay, one more- how about the Jackson Five singing about One Bad Apple??

Okay, okay, two more! Alcohol related-I can't help myself- For all you George Thoroughgood (not sure of spelling) fans- "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and, of course "I drink alone" (The other night I lay sleeping and I woke from a terrible dream, so I called up my pal Jack Daniels and his partner Jimmy Beam and we drank alone) - of course I think my stomach might not like that!
