View Full Version : Spinoff: If you could choose a new user name...

...what would it be?

I'm fine with my current user name, but if I were to change it, I'd be BarbeyGirl. (Because I raise Barb horses.) :D

Why couldn't you choose a new user name?

You could start as a "new user," but you'd lose your post count. There was discussion on the other BB name thread about whether it is possible to change your name without hte system believing you to be a new user. :)

If I could it would either be: Moose or rev2be. The only issue I have with my current screen name is if you google my name my recent posts come up - not always the safest thing.

Junebug, for my little red mare. Hey, it's better than pork chop, which my parents still occasionally call me.:o

I would pick one that does not include my name. Not a bright thing for me to do for my current user name. Let's see....maybe...ValNtine (my birthday is on Valentine's Day)...or..Luv2Cook...that one's obvious. :D Another one would be KoKoMoM...KoKo is my Min Pin.
Whatever I pick, I would definately be more creative than what I have now...

I picked Pointerhaven to ensure that all my rescue friends would remember what I was doing and the breed of my choice...so far it has worked.

However I have thought of names like Gardnrgal or Bosswmn or Dwghalr which is what my Tag says on my truck or Wnblown on my convert.....

But I'll stick to Pointerhaven because that is my first passion, then comes cooking and eating...lol

There are a jillion nicknames that go with my last name of Hamm. I had heard nearly all of them by the time I went into the Navy. Until my last submarine. A guy on there called me "Beans". Always loved that nickname. It was totally different than anything I'd heard before and clever at the same time.
So, I'd probably change it to Beans. ;)

I've seriously considered it since I am using my real name, which isn't too smart. If I do make the change, I'll probably use the name I use in some other contexts, TahoeKay. (That's true, too, but not quite as hanging out there.)

I SO wish I could change mine. I wasn't really thinking how much it would be my name as opposed to username around here, if you know what I mean, and so I just took the email address assigned to me by the University of Virginia in law school (which I am still using as my email username with yahoo). :o It drives me nuts that I cannot change it. I would probably go with either something University of Michigan related (like "Block M" or something) or maybe something that referred to my dogs... *sigh* This issue has bugged me for a while. :o

I also considered it a user name, rather than that it would be my identity (if that makes sense). Of course, the fact that it IS my name makes that immaterial. Sometimes I wish I hadn't used my (highly unusual) name, esp living in a small city. But even if I'd picked a different user name, I'm sure I'd sign some posts with my real name, which would net out in the same place if someone were to do an online search for me. Speaking of which, I read not too long ago the percentage of people who said they "Googled" the names of potential employees; I don't remember what it was, but it was over 50%.

I think I'd leave my username as is. Yes, it's my first name, but A is not my last initial, it's my middle initial, so I figure you don't get very far knowing my first name, middle initial and city I live in. Plus, in a community like this, where we get to know each other's "real" names anyway...what difference does it make?

Moxie Crimefighter

It's what Penn of Penn and Teller named his daughter.

I don't think its a good name for a little girl but I like it as a screen name!

I'm with you - I was uninventive and used my e-mail addy, and so wish I could change it. Some other boards I'm on allow X username changes per X number of days.

Although for me, I have not given much thought to what I would change my user name here to . . .

I don't see why it is a terrible thing to go back to zero with posts, but I guess it's kind of like a badge of honor to have a high number. I like my name, but if I changed it, I'd have to change it to Jazzmatazz54, which is my age now!

What would be the point of googling usernames of potential employees? You are assuming that no one else in the world would ever use the same username on any other bulletin board on the internet.

I used my own name and last initial here; I wouldn't care if anyone I knew identified me with my posts on this board. But I belong to other boards as well where I use more "cryptic" usernames. I've googled those usernames, and some of them appear on many other boards. But those users aren't me; they are just people using the same username as ones that I've selected.

I wouldn't mind going back to zero posts here; I've been here a long time, but I'm not that prolific a poster!

Hmmm.....
I just googled my username and there is a website that tracked all my posting on CLBB
http://www.boardtracker.com/cgi-bin/display_member.pl?board=196&member=12198

And there is someone on ratemybutt.com with the same user name...too bad she's in way better shape than me! :p

I'd name myself after one of my favorite foods or spices. Easy to remember. Maybe Sauvignonblanc -- that sounds so sophisticated.

It does sound sophisticated! On the other hand, I might have chosen "effingmerlot" because I just love that line from the movie, SIDEWAYS! And scudgal is so NOT me! I am antiwar, and just use the moniker because I used to work at a company for many many years with "scud" in their name.

I think the previous poster was talking about googling the actual names of applicants, not their user names. :)

Oh, maybe! But, still, what is the point? If I google my name, I come up with pages and pages of entries; none of which are me.

But if you google my name you get exactly 4 entries. Two are related to my coaching habit, 1 related to my 9th grade school in Chile's alumni listing and 1 related to a quote I provided to a client that posted it on some intranet thing and can't be accessed from outside. The other hits have to do with other family members. So, if you have a unique name it could provide lots of information.

You can often Google someone's user's name that will link back to a MySpace page with the person's real name, picture, email address, and physical address listed.

This was the case a while back when there was enough personal information listed on MySpace for them to be able to purge tens of thousands of pedophiles.

Yes, but my name yields quite a few (mostly profession- or horse-related) entries. No one else seems to have my name. :) I guess I'd look to a potential employer like a pretty normal, well-rounded person whose resume contains accurate information.

Don't foget that that you can Google phone numbers. Also, you can also glean information from email addresses and IP's.

So, granted, it depends a lot on how unique your real name (or username) is.

I'm fortunate (I guess!) not to have a very uncommon name!

And some potential employers might google your name to see what is available by or about you. If you say inflammatory things on the "safe" internet what might you say or do in their offices?

I'd be more witty than my initials and last name (well, maiden name now) and go with something like Fluffernutter. I LOVE fluff, the sandwiches, I'm from Mass originally, and I'm slightly nutty. Perfect name.

We need to ask the moderator folks for a redo and keep our post count!

I'm another one that you can google and I come up on two pages of stuff. Or maybe I shouldn't say that, now y'all can stalk me.
