We are fortunate to have a large bedroom, I would like to purchase an electric fireplace. Would a gas one be better, more $ ? We have a gas one in the family room but I thought one in the bedroom would be great. Any ideas?

When I lived in Washington State we had a fire place in all the rooms it was an old house that did not always have central heat at sometime in the past the wood stoves and fires places were the only heat source. I do not think I would want a wood burning stove again but I would love a gas or electric they have come along way and look good without the mess

One of the reasons I want a gas fireplace in the bedroom over an electric fireplace is to enjoy the flickering of real flames in the darkness as I drift off to sleep.

The house we bought used to be an up/down duplex, with a fireplace in both living rooms. Since we're using it as a single family dwelling, we use the downstairs "living room" as our bedroom--it's enormous, away from the road, quiet, and since the guest room is on the upper level, even when people are there for an extended stay, it still feels like we have our own space. Love it. We left the upstairs fireplace as wood burning, but we converted the one in our bedroom to gas. I love it. We can set it on a thermostat setting (which we did when our furnace shot cr@ps on the coldest night of the year last winter) but the thing I love most most most is that I get up before DBF usually, and in the winter, I can click on the fireplace when my alarm goes off (did I mention I love the remote?) and go brush my teeth, etc., and then when I come out, there's a little pocket of warmth where I can get dressed by firelight and still see what I'm doing without waking up DBF. And yeah, there's all that romantic firelight stuff too. But mostly, it's remote-ing on the fire on winter mornings when I have to haul my @ss to work. Also, if I have to go out and shovel the driveway, it's most excellent to come in and be able to warm my butt in front of the fire before getting dressed for work.
FWIW, I have one girlfriend who blanches every time I mention my beloved fireplace. She has an (to my mind irrational) fear of gas appliances, so to her, it's like I have a huge bomb, albeit in a gorgeous oolitic limestone housing, in the corner of my bedroom! :p
