Sucking a teaspoon of sugar off the spoon always works for me.

I am sure if you Google this, you'll get hints! Remember that girl earlier this year that had them for a month? I think the Today show had her on and viewers wrote in with thousands of tips.

Here is mine:

drink a glass of water upside down (bend over and put your mouth on the opposite side of the glass)

OR

have someone close your ears with their fingers while you drink a glass of water.

Drinking hot water sometimes will relax the muscles to make them stop. My husband gets severe hiccups due to a muscle disease, and this is the only thing that works for him.

I used to get hiccups more than anyone I know. I tried every single remedy out there. The fingers-in-the-ears-while-you-drink is pretty good, but my absolute go-to (which you can do in a bar, conveniently, and is actually where I learned it) is to take a wedge of lemon, drizzle it with Angostura bitters and then pop the whole thing in your mouth and sort of suck/chew on the pulp. It feels like the top of your head will lift off, but it generally works.

I used to get the hiccups all the time. I'd get them several times a week. The things that worked for me were eating peanut butter or eating a piece of candy. Drinking as much water as I could before I needed to take a breath also sometimes worked, but the pb and candy seemed to do the trick the most often. Good luck! I know how aweful the hiccups can be.

Taking 10 small sips of water quickly without taking a breath works for me every time.

I also get the hiccups constantly. One trick that always works, but looks quite ridiculous if you're out in public: put your pinkies in your ears, and hold you nostrils shut with your index fingers (effectively sealing off your head ;) ), then have someone slowly give you a glass of water. This has been a no-fail solution for me!

I use the old breathing into a paper bag routine. It's the only thing that seems to work for me!

I do this one too -- it works everytime. My coworker completely freaked out when I did this at work though and DH won't try it. But it works!

That works for me, but having someone scare you, like mom2garret said, works also, and gets you laughing (and mad!) as well. Good luck!

Try rubbing a Q-tip on the roof of your mouth towards the back (on your soft palate). We googled hiccup cures once when we had a patient after open heart surgery who had the hiccups and was really in pain with them. He wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything yet, and his pain medication wasn't helping much. We found this one and tried it, and it worked immediately. I have since used it on myself on numerous occasions with success.

Susan, I sincerely hope your hiccups are gone now!

Me too. I get them a lot, and I figured out that for me, it's all about breaking the rhythm of the hiccups. I personally believe that's what all the tricks do--trick you into breaking the rhythm. I just take a really deep breath and hold it as long as I can, then quickly let the air out and take another breath really fast and hold that, and usually that's it. I have to hold it long enough to go one or two "cycles" without hiccuping, and that does the trick most of the time. Sometimes I think they are gone and stop, and they come back and I have to do it again, but it always works eventually. My son gets them a lot too; I wonder if it is genetic...?

When I get them, I swallow really hard when I feel one coming on. Hopefully yours are gone now.

Hope they're gone by now but best cure I know is to take a small glass of water, strike a match and drop it in the drink the water but not the match. Works every time!

I have never heard of of the match thing. I am going to try it next time I get the darn pesky problem! :p

A teaspoon of vinegar works really well. Any kind will do.

This may sound crazy, because I know everyone is always stressed, but I read that you get them when you're really stressed. I noticed that happens to me. When I feel them coming on, I stop short, think about what's bothering me, acknowledge it, and try to calm down. It has worked. (Perhaps you breathe shallowly when stressed and that brings them on?)
