View Full Version : September reviews

Thought I'd start a new thread with reviews of September recipes, with apologies to those of you who haven't yet received this issue.
Made the Tuna with Rain Forest Glaze tonight. The glaze was excellent; unfortunately, I didn't get the tuna from our usual fish store; they were out, so I had to settle for the grocery store's yellowfin which was perfectly bland - nothing like our usual. I'll have to make it again with "real" fish. As I said, though, the glaze was great. One note on the ingredients - apricot or mango nectar were hard to find. I just happened upon mango nectar in the Mexican section of the store.
On the menu over the next week or so are the churrasco, the penne w/green beans, sun-dried tomatoes, & breadcrumbs, the soba noodles w/chicken in peanut sauce, & the grilled turkey club. I'll keep you posted as to their palatability!

Ralph,
I haven't recieved Sept's issue yet, but I will try that recipe when I get it. I thought I'd post my review of a recipe from August's issue...
Italian Met Loaf w/Fresh Basil and Provolone (pg122) My mother and I have each made this now and it is delicious. Its about an hour of prep work but it is certainly worth it. It is full off flavor and the left overs are great too. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I just received my magazine this weekend. I've only glanced at it once so far, but the penne with green beans, tomatoes, and bread crumbs did sound yummy. In the process of moving right now, so I might not have a chance to try anything yet for a few weeks. Keep us posted! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I was craving sweet and just happened to have all the ingredients for the German Chocolate Bundt Cake, so I made that this weekend. It's yummy!!
Yeah! Imagine my delight when I just discovered mine in the mailbox today. Perfect timing! I am having a get together on Wed night and am going to make the hot artichoke and spinach dip.

If someone tries the lasagna with grilled summer vegetables, let us know what you think. It looks really good, but I've packed my lasagna pan already for our move, and won't have time to make it for a while.

I'm in NJ- no CL light in my mailbox yet. It seems to come at different times each month. One month I had to actually go buy the magazine at the store because I figured I'd never get it. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif Of course, I got it the next week (way late!). It does usually arrive before the start of the month. These people are killing me with these recipe reviews! I want to play, too!!!
I'm in Los Angeles and no CL yet. It's horrible to go in the grocery store and see the beautiful issue sitting there, especially if I've seen the online reviews. Help.

I don't want to add to any anguish here, but the Ooey Gooey Brownies......Y-U-M!
Those of you who haven't gotten Sept yet, just consider this: the higher your anticipation, the better the recipes can taste!

Hi Susann,
I did not get it so while i was shopping today I could not help but purchase the copy while I was there. I was having withdrawel and I am afraid that my mailman is enjoying it!!! But I am happy if someone else is enjoying my copy as long as it doesn't get shared again next month!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Looks like California is going to be last on the delivery this month!!! I have now developed an empathy for those of you who experience late delivery on a regular basis. I usually receive my issue by the middle of the month. We are now VERY late!!! I guess it's my turn so I will practice patience....

No sign of the September issue in DC either. I can never complain though. My sister is in the military and stationed over in Germany. She is usually about a month behind with her CL subsriptions! She does say the mail to Germany is quicker than to Okinawa (her last post). Then she says she was REALLY behind! I always try to remember that when I'm getting a little anxious for my next issue!

I haven't gotten mine in Cincinnati yet either. I usually get it much earlier in the month (I think). But I think this is the first month I've been reading the board regularly, so I've never before really been aware of when others are getting theirs. I am getting really anxious for it now though. The German Chocolate Bundt Cake and the Ooey Gooey Brownies (mentioned above) both sound luscious! You can tell what sorts of recipes really tempt me! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

No CL in York, PA. I think it was better before I started reading these posts I was happy whenever the new issue came. My daughter who lives in MD usually gets her issue a few days before me. She didn't get her Sept issue either. Maybe tomorrow.

Britin, soba noodles are made with buckwheat flour. If you can't find them on the Asian/ethnic aisle at your grocery store, you should be able to find them at a health food store. They taste different than spaghetti (even whole wheat), but I can't recall well enough to give you a good analogy (I've only eaten them once!).
I am in north Florida, and my CL has been very late almost every month since we moved here (March) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/mad.gif!!! I never get my issues anymore until the first week of the month, after it's been on the newwstand tempting me for weeks! When I lived in New Haven, CT I always got my issues early. Boy was I spoiled! If you hadn't guessed, I'm still waiting for mine too............... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Do you think maybe they saw all our comments and punished the people who got early delivery last month??
Well, I finally got mine today so now I can see the brownies on the cover! There are a couple of recipes in there that sound pretty good. I like a couple of the pasta ones, especially the carbonara. And I must try the artichoke and spinach dip. Now, I just need to invite some folks over to eat it!

I am in Massachusetts and was glad to receive my September issue yesterday. I went through it last night and marked several recipes that I want to try this month, Grilled Cornish Hens w/ Honey Mustard-Cilantro Glaze, Pork Tenderloin w/ Costa Rican Coffee Glaze, Chicken Tetrazzini, and Individual Chocolate Souffles to name a few.
I was thinking about the Spicy Soba Noodles with Chicken in Peanut Sauce, but am unfamiliar with Soba Noodles. Where might one find them? Do they taste anything like whole wheat spaghetti? Has anyone tried this recipe?

Today I made the German Chocolate Bundt cake. It was terrific. Very moist, and just enough coconut and pecan flavor. I'll definitely make this one again. I also made some older CL recipes - the Greek Burgers with Feta Aioli (AGAIN!!), Quinoa, Shrimp and Cilantro salad (my first time eating Quinoa - very good). I liked this particular salad, and the quinoa was pretty much tasteless by itself, and it picks up the flavors of whatever you serve it with, so I will definitely try some of the other recipes with it too. It will make good lunches for me this week. I was going to make the Viennese Potato Salad too, but couldn't find celery root (celeriac) anywhere. Whole Foods actually had it, but the two they had were rotten. So I'll be holding off on that one until I can find it. That was it for me for this weekend, but I also found an old CL recipe for Caribbean Mango Tilapia, and I bought Tilapia yesterday, so I will be making that Monday night for dinner. I will tell you how that turns out tomorrow!
Grace
P.S. I forgot to mention I also made the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer - WOW! Everyone raved about it and asked for the recipe. An DEFINITE keeper! Mmmmm!!!

Caribean Mango tilapia sounds good! Which issue is that in? I made the Grilled Tuna with Rain Forest Glaze. My fish market did not have tuna so I substituted with wahu (No idea how to spell it!!!) Can't say I loved this dish. The fish tasted very fishy..I would have thought it was just the fish but I saw someone else saying their fish did not taste great either. Anybody find success with this dish?

i must say, we go thru this every month, i haven't been able to come to the BB or even read my mag right away, as i'm perusing this thread, my mag is still on the kitchen counter from last week. i sometimes get peeved w/ CL for delivering late, but the upside is, i can read all the reviews & not have to make the unsuccessful ones!

The Caribbean Mango Tilapia is from the Jul/Aug 1999 issue. Has anyone else made this? Let me know how it was if you did! I'll let you know tonight how it turned out! We have our CL Supper Club tomorrow night - I am making the Zebra Cheesecake. Boy this sure is fun...

I received my Sept issue on Friday (8/25), I think, so I'm right up there with Mrs. Reber and other northern NJ readers. I'm on vacation, but we didn't take our usual trip to Wildwood Crest (boo hoo), so I'm not really in cooking mode -- must be that vacation mentality! Last week I made the shrimp with feta and fettucini from June's CL, and tonight I'm making the fajitas again (can't get away from that marvelous June issue). Thanks for the input on September, have to try some of the recommended recipes.

Wow, I am so excited! I am having company over on Friday so I now have a reason to make the spinach and artichoke dip- and more people to eat it! I was thinking of making appetizer type dishes and keeping it informal. I am so glad that dip is getting great reviews. I want to make a brushetta as well and the apple brie braid that was posted not long ago (at least I think that's the name). Boy, I need to entertain more.

Gee, is this thread about recipe reviews or who did or didn't get the latest issue of CL?
I think yours is the only posting out of 42 that actually has a review. Actually I don't know if that's true, I quit looking after about 20 posting about how people feel about not having gotten, or having gotten, the current issue of CL http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif
Too bad the people who manage this forum don't weed out all t his off topic chatter.
It really is frustrating to have to plow through this line of discussion every month when CL goes into distribution.

You're great. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Actually, I've taken great comfort in hearing the laments from other folks in CL withdrawal, especially now that the September issue has hit the news stands in Ohio but not my mailbox. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif And, to use your famous phrase again, I do love all this sitting around the kitchen table and talking about our favorite magazine -- reviews, cheers, groans, and all.

Mikecox,
I agree, we need to accept everyone's input here - the good with the bad. It is inevitable that there will be things that frustrate people on any bulletin board - boards on the internet are made up of all sorts of different people from different walks of life. I feel it's better to just shrug off what annoys you - it's not so hard to just scroll down and skip over what you're not interested in.
I have been to boards where people post in anger and frustration and it never seems to do any good - it usually just leads to bickering and fighting. I love this board because everyone is so polite and kind. Better to swallow a bit of frustration than to risk hurting the feelings of others.
My posting here is not meant as a personal attack, just a pleading to keep these boards civil and upbeat - a place that we can all look forward to "meeting".

I tried the Farfalle Carbonara last night and was disappointed. I used spaghetti instead of farfalle because that's what I had on hand. It was very easy to make but I thought very bland. Perhaps I'm not a great judge for this dish, both my husband and I are not big alfredo type sauce people. This could also be why we didn't like the Penne w Zucchini and Ricotta last month. Please let me know when others give this recipe a try! On to something else new, plenty of material in Sept. issue. Thanks. LaurieC

LaurieC,
I made the Penne with Green Beans, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, and Toasted Breadcrumbs last night. I was alittle cautious about trying it because I also was very disappointed with the Penne with Zucchini and Ricotta from last month.
Well, my family thought this one was a real winner! I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. The one change I did make was I added alot more of the tomato liquid than the recipe called for because it was looking dry during the cooking process. I think it said 1/4 cup and I used 1 cup. The tomatoes, tomato liquid and cheese blend together well to coat the pasta with a nice "rosa" color and the red wine vinegar adds just the right flavor. If you are looking for a quick, vegetarian pasta dish I would highly recommend it.
On a negative point, I would give a thumbs down to the Chicken Taco Salad. I made it this weekend because I already had all of the ingredients at the house and it was easy. Though it tasted OK, I felt it was very average. The Black Bean Taco Salad from July (?) is the real winner.
Tonight I'm making the Mango Chicken. Anyone else try any others??

What did your family hate about the mango chicken? I was going to make that, but now, maybe I'll give it a second thought!
I had the mango chicken last night, and liked it! It wasn't terribly exciting, but a nice quick weeknight dinner. My husband doesn't like mango (actually, any fruit! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif ) in his food, but I chopped it pretty fine and it just added a nice sweetness without being obviously fruity. Does that make any sense?!?!
I also made the Peanut Butter-Crispy Rice Bars (not sure if that's the right name) from Sept. and they were great! Very quick and a great snack.

As promised, my reviews of addtional Sept. recipes:
GRILLED TURKEY CLUB - Excellent, easy, quick; substituted sliced sharp cheddar for processed American cheese.
**Especially for CrystalB**
SPICY SOBA NOODLES W/CHICKEN IN PEANUT SAUCE - EXCELLENT & easy. But as I've confessed before, I tend not to be too particular with measurements, so I might have been a bit generous w/ginger, peanut butter, red pepper, & garlic. Nonetheless, I'd definitely make it again; can't wait to eat the leftovers!
CHURRASCO W/CHIMICHURRI SAUCE & PERUVIAN SARSA SALAD - Also, very good. Next time, might use flank steak instead of sirloin. The salad was a wonderful & different side dish.
PENNE W/GREEN BEANS, SUN-DRIED TOM., & BREADCRUMBS - Wonderful combination of ingredients; also very easy.
Haven't figured out next week's menu yet, but I'll keep you all posted....

I also made the Mango Chicken this week and we thought it was good. I agree with Jen that it was not especially exciting, but it was very easy and something different. I am very curious to know what "bariyaki's" family disliked about it...

I didn't make a September recipe last night--but I made an August. I made the Italian Meatloaf with basil and provolone. I made it with ground turkey breast instead of beef and found it delicious. The only thing I would note, is it needs a tad more liquid than called for if using turkey. Luckily it was just moist enough. The whole family really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the review Ralph! I liked the P'Nutty Noodles from a couple of monthes ago, and this sounds like a keeper too. I'm planning on making them Saturday night- I'll post my review next week! Thanks again.

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen...
First - hope you all had a terrific long weekend.
Second - how different-tasting is the sauce for the Spicy Soba Noodles (Sept./00)
from the one for the Peanutty Noodles (May./00)? Preference for one or the other? Just wondering if I need to try them both...

I was so excited to get my September CL this Wednesday as I was able to plan a couple of new recipes into this weeks' menus. Labor Day I made the grilled sweet potatoes and the pork tenderloin with coffee sauce.
The sweet potatoes were a bit under-done for our taste. Next time I will boil them a bit longer than 5 minutes, since the color after grilling suggested 8 minutes on the grill was about right. We ended up sticking them in the microwave to finish. I know they weren't supposed to be "mushy" but my expectation was that you should be able to cut them with a fork. The cilantro/orange/adobe sauce was excellent. Nice bite.
I used the coffee sauce on spareribs instead of pork tenderloin. Precooked the ribs in the microwave, then cooked on the grill for the last 16 minutes. Even though we cooked on indirect, the ribs still got a bit too chared. The sauce was good, but not worth the preparation time in my opinion.

This weekend I made three recipes from the September issue.
Pork Chop Suey - It was fairly easy to make and I thought the flavor was excellent. I felt it tasted very much like some I had eaten at a Chinese restaurant.
Spicy Soba Noodles with Chicken in Peanut Sauce - This also was very good. I cut the chicken breasts up in bite size pieces and stir-fried them instead of boiling the breasts. We enjoyed it, though I can't remember how it compares to the Peanutty Noodles from the April(?) issue. The recipes seem to be fairly similar...I'm not sure which I like better. Anything with peanut sauce in my house is always popular!
Feta Omelet with Breadcrumbs - Thumbs down on this one. I made it for Sunday brunch and it was way below average. I thought there were too many breadcrumbs in the crust. My husband commented it was very dry and the top cooked way to fast, even with my broiler on the low setting. The picture in the magazine looked so inviting, while mine came out brown and dry looking. Don't know where I went wrong on this one...and I don't intend to figure it out. Won't be making that one again.
I'm going to make the Seared Salmon with Warm Lentils tonight. I'll let you know how it is...

I made the spaghetti with meatballs (I know-how creative, right?) and they were good. I used turkey breast and added red pepper flakes. I will make this one again.
Forget the brownies and run-- do not walk-- straight for the churrasco with chimichurri sauce. FABULOUS. I did make a couple of minor adjustments, as my Cuban genes took over. Even though there is already loads of garlic, I increased it to an even quarter cup, then hacked the meat with the tip of my butcher's knife and slathered it first with some of the garlic on both sides, then the dry mix of herbs, then a little of the vinegar, making sure some of the goodies were infused into the slits in the meat. Then I marinated as per the recipe, turning the meat in the bag occasionally (I had more than one piece and wanted to be sure everything was amply covered) We ended up marinating about 3 1/2 hours and my husband used a bit of the marinade (minus solids) as he was barbecuing. (We also may have still had a bit of leftover unburned mesquite from the last meal, which imparts its own flavor.)
I served it with black beans and rice instead of the slaw. Everyone thought it was EXCELLENT! I am drooling just thinking about it...

Reply to LIsaP about the Mango Chicken.
We thought it was bland, boring and kinda tart, not from the mango though, from the "sauce". I was able to buy some really nice mangoes this week. I am feeeding two teenagers who are pretty adventurous eaters, but one ate it and made faces through dinner, and the other picked out the chicken and mango chunks and tossed the rest. I see that others have made it and liked it, goes to show we all have different tastes! Aren't we glad?? If we didn't, cooking and life would be really boring!
