Here (http://money.cnn.com/2007/10/25/news/companies/bumbo_recall/index.htm?cnn=yes) is the CNN story about it.

We have one and I've never used it anywhere but on the floor, but noticed just last night my son's ability to arch his back and come halfway out of it. Thank goodness I was standing there to see him do it.

So when they recall things, do you take the items back to the store or do you just throw it away? Ours was a baby shower gift, so no idea where it came from.

Very sad about this. We loved our Bumbo chair at first. He loved sitting up like a big boy. :)

In this situation, I would keep the chair. All they will do is give you a new chair with a warning label on it--"Do not place child in chair on a table or kitchen counter." This chair isn't actually unsafe--unless in the hands of someone, uh, challenged enough not to realize that it shouldn't be used in high places.

If you're worried about your son arching his way out of it, you could just put some pillows around him.

Most recalls give you the option of applying to the manufacturer for a replacement (in this case a chair with a warning label) so you wouldn't need to know where it was purchased. They won't give you your money back.

I've only owned 1 toy that was recalled, and that was a set of soft train shaped blocks with plastic wheels that could detach, posing a choking hazard. Rather than getting a replacement toy, I just took all the wheels off. Problem solved.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks. :)

My son is actually getting to be a little too big for it anyway, so I almost never put him in it. When I go to pick him up out of it, his fat little legs get stuck so I end up picking him up along with the chair. ;)

I know we've got some newer moms out there though, so thought I'd post this in case it was helpful to anyone else.

DH read about this yesterday. About a month ago I decided I wanted a Bumbo seat for Hannah. We looked for used one at Once Upon a Child, but no luck. So, I asked daycare to let me know if she REALLY enjoyed it there so I'd know whether or not to shell out $40 bucks for a new one. That day when I picked DD up from daycare, they said the Bumbo was probably not a good idea for our feisty wiggle worm. Apparently she was bucking and arching in it like crazy and would have flipped it had they not been watching her closely. The said they'd never before seen a baby get so much momentum in the bumbo!:D So, I'm glad I didn't buy one. She'd have to use it in a fully padded room, and I'm sure her chubby thighs would get wedged in it too.

We loved ours because DS was very happy to be able to sit in a vertical position. But he had very chubby thighs so he outgrew it fast. We always used on carpeting because he was an active kid and would sometimes arch his back.

They have (or at least had) a great resale value on Craigs List so we sold it for $5 less than we paid. So we got to use it for about 2 months and it only cost us $5. totally worth it.
