View Full Version : Do you still iron?

I just had a marathon ironing session, and now there are three more shirts stacked up. Not a big fan of ironing. I just saw an infomercial for a steamer - has anyone gone that route? How do you get creases into khakis? Do they really work??? I'd almost consider steaming - I could keep my dh's dress shirts home rather than going to the cleaners.
Opinions, please?

Nope.
If something (like my shirt or pants) is wrinkled, I toss it in the drier to fluff up a bit and smooth it out.
I used to iron DH's shirts when he was working killer hours.....he's retired now :)
I don't think I even know where my iron is these days

We iron, but only when we need something to wear right then. That means that one of us irons every other day or so (neither of us work in an office). In theory, I guess it would make more sense to iron everything at once, but I would go bonkers with that much ironing!

We iron as we need something, not all at once.
My best friend always irons everything at once. She turns on a Sex in the City DVD and irons through a few episodes! I've never ironed that way. My clothes wrinkle in my packed closet. :) My closets have never been big, so maybe that is why I can't imagine ironing something and then stuffing it back in my closet. So, I iron when needed. :) I hate ironing.

I also iron as needed. I don't really worry about things like creases in khakis. I find if I hang things up from the laundry right away, I only need to do a quick iron on most things.
And for me, winter is a little easier, since I wear a lot of sweater or knit things that don't require ironing.
Still take DH's dress shirts to the cleaner - there is no way I would ever get the same look by ironing it myself!

I take everything that has to be ironed to the $1.75 cleaner. I'm not lazy, I just don't have time. They love me there!

I love to iron. In fact, my ironing board is a piece of furniture in my bedroom :D My mother used to iron sheets but I won't go that far.

I almost never iron. I try to stay away from clothes that would require ironing, I pull things out of the dryer right when they're done, and anything that does need it gets our tall steamer. Love our steamer....had it so long can't imagine life without it! Just make sure it never runs out of water or it will fry it. And no, it doesn't do creases.

I do all my ironing about once a week. I do laundry on Sunday and iron on Monday. I like the zen of it and it gives me an excuse to watch brainless TV.

I hate ironing, but I will iron something if it needs it, before wearing.

I rarely iron. I have some nice pants that I just never wear because they need to be ironed! I am a jeans girl, and if they(or anything else for that matter) are wrinkly then I toss them in the dryer for a few minutes. I have also been known to spritz the kids with Downy Wrinkle Release and tug the wrinkles out of their shirts.
Come to think of it, we moved a few months ago and I don't think the ironing board made it onto the truck-I think it got left behind!

I hate ironing and avoid it as much as possible. I'm horrible at it too. I have cotton pants that need to be ironed in the summer, but I can go almost all winter without ironing at all.
My sister registered for (and received) a Rowenta steamer for her wedding. We used it before her engagement party and then everyone who had used it then demanded that she bring it to the hotel for the wedding. It is awesome. If I had an extra $200 to plunk down for it, I would buy one for sure.
I don't think it would work for things like pleats in khaki pants though.

I have a small steamer that I use at home on occasion, but for some items I just prefer how they look when ironed rather than steamed. Working retail I use a tall commercial type steamer on a daily basis and for dress shirts, light weight knit shirts and cotton pants you just don't get that crisp look with the steamer. But it is quick and easy for everything else.

I iron only when necessary, which for us is luckily not that often. I actually prefer steaming when possible, though. I have always dreamed of buying a professional-type steamer to use at home! When I was getting my master's degree I also worked part-time in a dress shop and we always used a steamer on the clothes. I liked the way it worked on dresses and other items that are sometimes difficult to iron well.

We don't have much that requires ironing, so I have gotten into the habit of letting it all pile up in the laundry room. Then, when the time is right, I find a Law and Order marathon, or something else to hold my interest, and I do it all at once.
I probably iron about 6 times a year. At the most!

I hate to iron -- as demonstrated by my pile that needs to be ironed.
So many of my t-shirts/tops really can't be worn without being ironed (if nothing else a quick iron). And, for some things I certainly do the ... put them out on the bed and try to smooth out the wrinkles.
For those nonironers out there -- do you take the clothes out of the dryer as it is spinning? Since they must wrinkle more as it sits.
Any other tips to cut down on the ironing etc?
Do those Downy type wrinke release priducts really work?
Thanks!

I iron. It's not my favorite task, but it's also not the least favorite. Sometimes I'll iron several things at once, but it's usually one of my morning tasks as I'm getting ready for work. To answer Debie's initial question, I do own a steamer, but I've never had great luck with it. It's not the most expensive one, so that's probably my biggest problem with it. I'm considering taking some of winter jackets to the person who does my alterations and seeing if they'll give them a good steaming to get ready for the cooler weather.
I caught the middle of an infomercial flipping channels last weekend for an iron/steamer combination. In a weak moment, I actually almost fell for it. :D Heck, they made it seem SO easy! (Not that they'd do anything like that in an infomercial!!!) I did have the brilliant idea to check for opinions on the web - it received primarily a big thumbs down! I guess I'll continue ironing.

I still iron my clothes and DH's pants, but his shirts get sent to the cleaners, even though he's retired, as he likes them very stiff, and I can't get them right! Ok by me!;)
I love to iron, though! I gather it for a few weeks, since I wear jeans most of the time, and go through all the tivo'd programs that DH doesn't watch!
I also pull knit things out of the dryer, then smooth them out on top of the dryer, till everything is out, then hang them up! My dryer has a 'wrinkle-free' setting, which helps!

I am always behind on my ironing! :( I like to iron, but it seems there is always so much to iron that it just piles up. DH wears slacks and dress shirts to work so almost all of his clothes have to be ironed. I have to iron my work clothes as well. I like to watch a movie while I'm ironing as it helps the time go by and I'm not so aware of the fact that I am toiling over a hot iron. :D

I'm also a follower of the "take right out of the dryer and smooth it manually" school of thought. The rule around here is "If you want it ironed, iron it." As soon as we retired, we retired. Me too. Wrinkled khakis don't bother me a bit...on me or him!:D

I concur. I love Downy's Wrinkle Releaser and I hate pressing button up shirts. That must be why I buy them and then they get worn quite rarely. Maybe some day I'll have enough spare money to pay someone to wash/iron them for me.

as close to never as one can possibly be...I love linen...flax...
DM is the Ironing Queen and she threatens to iron my natural fabric clothing every times she comes to visit. I tell her "if you can't stand the wrinkles, stay out of the linen...":)

No, I don't iron. Ever. I work from home and DH is a grad student. We are both permanently rumpled.
I was looking at something recently with DS (age 4) and there was a picture of an iron. He asked me what it was. :o
The few things that I have that are in severe need of ironing, I just get dry-cleaned.
I try not to iron, but sometimes I just gotta do it. I use Downy wrinkle release and it does a pretty good job of removing those closet wrinkles. This is what I normally do; I put the clothes in the dryer for about 6 minutes and pull them out while they are still wet and hot. Then I give everything a hard shake and start smoothing and creasing the clothes as I hang them up. I never let clothing go in the dryer the full time because they get too wrinkly.
Try it, I think you will be surprised at how nice they come out.

My husband does all the ironing, if I need something ironed I leave it on his dresser and he will take care of it and hang up for me.

I love to iron. In fact, my ironing board is a piece of furniture in my bedroom :D My mother used to iron sheets but I won't go that far.
I am waiting for the kick off of the Packers/Chiefs game to head to my bedroom to iron the pillow cases (spritzed with lavendar water) and the top (fold-over part) of the top sheet, also spritzed with lavendar water.
My ironing board only gets folder up when the maids come to clean every other week. DH does the laundry and leaves the clothes that need to be pressed on the board and I iron when I get around to it. :o

I ironed the other day - but only because I was attaching name labels to my DD's school clothes :D . Other than that I rarely iron anything. Actually, I noticed the other day that my iron was starting to rust on the sides:eek:

Our work clothes go to the dry cleaners, but I iron my summer shirts and khakis. I let it build up and do it all at once while watching tv. (To keep things interesting, I spritz DD with the water bottle every now and then. :D )

While I am usually behind on the ironing, I really do enjoy it. It's very theraputic and I have such a sense of satisfaction when I'm done. All of my friends think I'm crazy, but I come from a mom who ironed sheets and my dad's white tee shirts!!
DH is "business casual" but dresses pretty nicely and most of our good "going out" clothes (and that's not much) go to the cleaners. I used to iron DS's khakis and collared shirts (school dress code), but he insisted that I stop. He wanted to look rumbled like his buddies! Almost killed me.

Ah, a woman after my own heart. ;) I'll almost ditto what Susan said, except my DH is in IT. It seems okay for him to be permanently rumpled. I think everyone would keel over if "the IT guy" wore a neatly pressed outfit. He wears jeans most of the time and I hand smooth his shirts when they come out of the dryer. If something does need ironing, DH does it. He used to be in the military, so he has more practice at it. :D
