This is way better than what my dad does. He leads them on like he wants to buy vinyl siding or whatever and then asks them if it's okay if he just declared bankruptcy. They never know what to say. My mom gets so mad at him for doing this.

SO FUNNY!! I love it. I actually used to be pretty rude to telemarketers until a Christmas eve at my Mom's house a few years back. After answering the phone and realizing it was a telemarketer I said "Are you seriously calling my mother's house on Christmas eve?!?" and the telemarketer said "Do you seriously think I want to be calling your mother's house on Christmas eve rather than being home with my own family?"
:( :o
Since then I have been a little nicer.

Too funny.
We are on the do not call list, which helps.
There always seems to be a delay between when I answer and the telemarketer starts to talk. If the person on the other end doesn't start talking right away, I just hang up before they start.

I do that all the time too. Sometimes my mother calls me and when I answer she doesn't reply right away, so I hang up on her. ;)
I figured that if a telemarketer feels that calling me is important enough, they'd better be there to answer right away. My time is too precious to hang on waiting to talk to someone I don't even want to talk to.

That is hilarious. We actually saw Tom Mabe (sp?) in person at a comedy club years ago. He called a Subway sandwich shop that was next door to the comedy club and was harassing the guy on the phone. He talked about (or maybe played the tape of) a call where someone was calling about carpet cleaning, and he went into this whole bit about "oh, I'm so glad you called....does your product get out BLOOD?!?"
Thanks for sharing! I have heard this before and I laughed then.
too funny. I have been rude to TMs also, but I hardly get the chance anymore since we are on the do not call list.

That is SO funny!
My former co-worker used to do something like this -
CW - Hello?
TM - Hi, can I speak to Mr. Greg *****?
CW - Can I ask who is calling?
TM - Is Mr. **** there?
Cw - (crying) No! But if you find him, tell him his babies are hungry and we need money. You know where he is don't you? What other numbers do you have for him? You better tell me where he is!
I always thought it was hilarious.

I'm always polite to telemarketers. They're just trying to make a living.
And you should be careful who you're mean to.
A friend of mine did outbound sales for a credit card company. The people she called were existing cardholders and she was selling extra benefits. She said people were really rude to her and all she could think was, "I have your name, address, phone number, ss #, date of birth, credit card info and you're abusing me....I could do some real damage to your life if I were a mean person."
I'm just sayin'.

Not all that many years ago I was in college and needed money, badly. I was forced to take a job doing telemarketing. Most humiliating job I've ever had but I needed something. Just remember, it could be your daughter/son/sister/brother/niece/nephew etc that is forced into that position some day. How you you feel if you knew people were being rude (sometimes abusive) to them on the phone? :o

We are on the Do Not Call list too, but we still get some. We have caller ID, but a lot of times it'll say "out of area" or give some 800 number. And I have my own business, so when someone calls and asks for me by name, I have to say "this is she". But once I find out it's a telemarketer, I ask them if they can hold on, "I think I'm getting another call". They say "sure", so I hit "flash" and after a minute or two, just hang up. I know it's rude, but I just don't want to be bothered. I know it's their "job" but I would think with the advent of the "do not call list" all these places would be gone!

I just say I'm not interested and thank them for calling. Then I hang up before they can say anything else. We are on the do not call list, but if you have ever done business with them they can still call. My husband has DishTV at his office and we get calls trying to get us to sign up for another service. We get a few others, but not many. We get calls from fundraisers that say they are with the local police dept. or sheriff's office, which is a lie really. They keep most of the money and only give a tiny amount to the police.
I always interupt and say, "I'm not interested - thank you." and hang up. While I'm sometimes annoyed by the calls, I know I could have been there or someone I love could be in those shoes, so I try not to be rude.
