Hi everyone, I'm so happy to be here! I found BB a few days ago and I'm so excited. I am a Southern girl from Charleston SC. I have been cooking with CL for about 4 years and I still love finding my newest edition in the mailbox. I immediately start thinking what do I have pressing tonight so I have plenty of time to look thru it! Anyhow HELLO.

Welcome Carolyn. I think you'll find this board immensely informative, supportive and even entertaining! And everyone is polite and friendly - can't beat it!

Hi, Carolyn, and welcome a-board. (Ugh, terrible pun.) MrsReber once said that being here is like sitting around the kitchen table with a bunch of friends and having a wonderful talk -- and I agree! Welcome again.
Cheers, Phoebe

Carolyn:
I am fairly new to the board also...maybe two weeks now. I like the idea of introducing oneself. I should have done that too instead of just posting replies and new topics. I too am a Southern girl from Atlanta, GA and have been cooking with CL for about 9 years. Welcome and we will looking forward to your input.

Thanks Phoebe, and MrsReber is right about the kitchen discussions. I have had so many questions and did not know who to call.I even called CL one time I wanted to fix a recipe with quinota (sp) in it, did not know what it was or looked like. I would still like to fix it. CL told me it is a type of grain.I can't find it anywhere.

Oh, wow, I am so honored to be quoted still! I just love this BB. All my questions get answered so quickly and everyone is so incredibly nice! Must be a side effect of cooking?? I am a NJ girl who would like to be a VA girl (someday, we just bought some property so we're working on it!!). Been with CL for oh, about 5 years. Maybe 6. It's gotten sooooo much better in the past two years, though.
Welcome Carolyn!! Welcome iqueen!!

I want to thank everyone for your warm welcome! I new as soon as I read some of your questions and the informative "quick" responses that I would love this place.Doing some archive reading you probably aren't aware that each of you have a very distinctive personally. I feel that I already know most of you. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I love this place, and can't believe all of the knowledge I've gathered (along with a few chuckles).
Another cup of tea at this end of the table please!

This site is completely addictive!! I am also new (a few weeks) and don't know how I got by without it. The reviews of the current magazine issues are fabulous. I cannot tell you how many recipes I have been turned onto based on members input. It also can't be beat as a resource.
Thanks to all of you good members - I am delighted to be a part of this!

Hi, nice to meet you Sandy & Nana!! My husband & I are going to the Tenn mountains for alittle R&R on the 16th & 17th. Hope the leaves will be pretty. Would not want to live there. Alittle to cold for me. We go up there with some friends quite often now, especially since I just married off my last daughter in May YEAH!!!!!! Beautiful State.

Just another Michigander pipping in!! We live in Grand Rapids, but since hubby is working in Auburn Hills, we'll probably be moving in the Spring. I have to agree that this site is completely addictive!! I spend way too much time here when I should be working!!!
Cheryl
Oops, meant to add that I would love to move to The South. I have always said that I'm a Southern who had the bad luck to be born in the North. I HATE the cold.

Carolyn.1, welcome to the BB! This board is such a great resource, and it still amazes me how many different people have much in common.
You should be able to find quinoa at your local heath food store. If that doesn't pan out, i am sure there are mail order sources. You might try 3Emarket.com if you can't find it locally. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Good luck.

I must agree with RUSTYSMOM on how addictive this site has become for me! I've only been on it for about a week, although I've been reading CL for a couple of years. Actually it's the first BB I have ever been on! Everyone has been so nice and my questions have been answered very quickly. It's been alot of fun reading all the other questions as well (even if I'm unable to give any answers) and hearing all the info on recipes I haven't tried yet. Are there any other Canadians on the BB? It is sometimes hard to find certain items up here in our food stores( by that I mean brand names ) It would be nice to be able to ask others.
Erin.

I know there are other Canadians out there, don't worry! Hey, Valerie, maybe we can switch sometime? We just bought property down around Farmville. It's so peaceful there. NJ is just jammed with people anymore. Been here most of my life, too. We always want to go to TN, we tried twice but on the way down there, we ended up staying in VA. Hopefully we'll get there one day!

mrsreber,
how did you happen on farmville?
i went to the university of va, and lived for 8 years in charlottesville. i've been to and through farmville a few times.
i was just surprised to hear you mention it. beautiful country!
Hi Erinyyc, I'm a fellow Canuck! I'm from Ontario but am living in Montreal at the moment. I share your frustration about American brand names--I think we just don't have the same selection here!
Anyhow--welcome, and I'm sorry you don't live closer (otherwise we could do a supper club!)

Greta, my husband had been to Farmville a few times. We've been to quite a few places in VA- out in the Blue Ridge Mts. camping a couple of times, on Chincoteague, I've seen Arlington. We just love land and country and trees. I have never felt so good and alive as when we've been in VA. Anyway, my sister-in-law's ex-husband owns land in Keyesville, about 20-25 minutes from Farmville. I just loved the whole town the first time we went there. We are closer to Keyesville, actually. It is so very peaceful there. We are trying to figure out how and what to build and how to make it all work so we can live there. Win the lottery perhaps?? It is very beautiful and we got 5 acres in a private community with two pretty lakes- one we can see from our property. We love it there. We camped on the property after the closing. Three days and only one car drove by. Of course, we did venture into Farmville for some good grub one night!

The VA countryside is beautiful, but I'm sure you don't want to trade places with me in Arlington if you don't like crowds! The DC suburbs are bursting with people. Going to NJ is like getting away for us!
For all those Michiganders, I actually grew up in Michigan and graduated from Central Michigan U (I've been in DC for five years). I lived in Grand Rapids. You want to talk about beautiful country....Lake Michigan in the summer is heaven on earth for me!

This talk of NJ and VA is making me so homesick!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif I'm stuck in Indiana but would love to get back to somewhere on the East Coast - anywhere between NJ and VA!!!!
Don't get me wrong, I love the little town we are in, but I got spoiled growing up in suburbs of NYC where you have real delis, great pizza and real bagels!!! We started laughing when we drove into our little Midwest town and saw the name of the local diner - The Four Seasons. And no one here knew why we were laughing.
My parents live near Charlottesville in a lovely little town and my dad teaches at UVA. It's a tiny town but they have a working mill (where my mom works and I can get great flours, etc.), a winery and an herb farm.
I miss mountains!! Since we've lived in Texas and now Indiana since 1993, my kids think hills are mountains!! If I could just transplant this warm, friendly, no-traffic little town a little further east and closer to family (and bagels, good pizza, and grocery stores with mushrooms more exotic than portobello!). Sigh....

I feel that it is time for me to speak up. I am also pretty new and definately addicted. I have to confess that I usually only read the BB and gather great information. I think I feel a little intimidated by the vast knowledge that you all possess, but then I also feel like a peeping tom just quietly watching from afar. So thank you all again for the great ideas and I will now put my 2 cents in.
thanks again

Welcome to you, too, Linda I Light! And speak right up any time! The only reason the knowledge base here seems so vast is that there are so many of us contributing to it -- not just with info but with questions and dilemmas. Otherwise, it would just be half-vast. (Oops.) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
Oh, and carolyn.1, when you get your quinoa, make sure you rinse it thoroughly before you cook it. Quinoa has a kind of coating on it that's very bitter if you don't rinse it off. I usually dump mine into a strainer and run cold water through it until the water runs clear -- the same way I rinse lentils, split peas, and beans.
Cheers, Phoebe

I also must warn of the CL BB addiction. I checked out the Supper Club area in the summer, now our group is planning our second meeting in Oct. I actually find myself looking forward to getting home to mainly check this site. I am from Massachusetts and do love all the info from the site. I am making the healthy picadillo tomorrow and baked shrimp w/ feta on Sunday. I will let you know how it turns out...stay warm southerners...it is going to top out at 40 here in New England on Sunday.

Welcom sylvie and Linda I Light! Oh, lindrusso, you poor woman, growing up with NY delis all around and then moving away! My sister moved to NC and loves it there, but she complains she can't get good bagels and pizza! How sad! I was out to Indianapolis a couple of times and it was very very flat. I would miss the mountains, too. Not that we have any mountains here in NJ, but we are not too far away. Ah, Valerie, no thanks on the crowds! We live too close to the shore- I love it, but we don't even go to the beach in the summer because it's simply too crowded and too much of a hassle.

I completely agree about the BB addiction! My poor printer has been working overtime since I found this board.
Seems everyone is from the east! Anyone out there from the west? I know I've read a few comments about people in Southern, CA. I'm in San Diego and love it! We plan to retire here, this is it for us.
Lindrusso... I totally understand! We moved from San Francisco to Louisville KY - Where in Indiana are you? We met a number of friends who live in Indiana. I have a pesto story that my husband always rolls his eyes over when I tell, but I can't resist.
We moved to KY and I was so excited to restock my kitchen, you know, I got rid of all the old stuff and it was time to start anew. My husband had to return to CA for a few days for the military, and I was alone so I drove around and found the local Kroger. I found most everything, except they did not have refried beans and I could not find pesto. I finally found a clerk and asked where I might find the pesto. He responded with "Whut?" I said, "you know, pesto...the basil sauce for pasta" He says with a totally perplexed look "Whuuuut?" I said "The green sauce, for pasta" He says "You wants whut? Gureen sawce fer yer noodles? What fer?" I had to laugh... I hope I have not offended anyone who is a local KY resident.... its' just that it was so different. We did have three lovely years there (although it was way too cold!) and met wonderful, lifetime friends who we still visit!

Watch out..this board is extremely addictive!! It is a great place to have questions answered and also get new idea and great recipes. It really is like sitting around a kithcen table talking to friends.

KimKelly,
A Fellow Californian Checking In! You are not alone. There are several of us on this Bulletin Board. I am a native Californian, originally from the SF Bay Area. We moved to Redding four years ago for a business opportunity. It was quite an adjustment at first, (slower pace, lack of really fine dining, beng away from all my friends and family), but I have come to love it. It is so beautiful up here! We have Mt. Lassen, Mt. Shasta, and beautiful lakes and rivers. We spend most of our spare time outdoors skiing, hiking, kayaking and biking.
We spend a fair amount of time in San Diego because we have several relatives that live there. It is a wonderful place to live! I can understand your desire to retire there. Are you originally from California? You mentioned living in SF...
I do love this bulletin board. Good Morning to the rest of you out in cyberspace!

Hi to everyone!
I am new to the BB also and absolutely love it. I am from Kentucky but moved to Southern Germany in March with my husband. I cannot believe how wonderful and friendly everyone is and very helpful too. I recently asked for simple spaghetti sauce recipes and received many replies... thanks a bunch!
Talking with everyone is my only link to the American world I have. You'll see me quite a bit!!!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I'm in the VERY northeast corner in a very small town. It really is a great town, a great place to raise kids and I will miss it dearly when we finally move. I just wish it were closer to a city or town with more options.
When I lived in Texas, I got spoiled (even more so than in NY because I was a teen living at home at the time and didn't CARE what was in the grocery store) living near Austin. Austin is a very hip and happening little city and, believe it or not, a GREAT place to be a vegetarian. The options were endless with large gourmet markets with every thing you could imagine. You could buy at least 6 different kinds of prepared pestos, all kinds of wild mushrooms in bulk, vegan baked goods, and I could go on and on.
Here people like things a bit simpler - at least generally speaking (I don't want to generalize and stereotype), so the markets just don't stock those kinds of things. I am excited that we got a SECOND grocery store in town (and will soon have THREE - yahoo!) that stocks the "exotic" ingredients I need like coconut milk, soba noodles, etc.
It's very interesting to read where everyone is from!

Everyone else is doing it, guess I'll jump on the bandwagon... I grew up in Buffalo, NY & now live in the beautiful Hudson River valley region of NY about 60 miles north of NYC. I appreciate everyone's help/feedback. I just joined 2 months ago & I, too, find the CL BB addictive! But it's such a nice forum to share and expand one's cooking knowledge. It just amazes me how quickly postings accumulate- if I miss a day or two, I have so much catching up to do!

Welcome, Carolyn1, iqueen, Rustysmom, erinyyc, Linda 1 Light, Sylvie, misstapioca, Kendra Anne and ML! The more the merrier! It's so much fun sharing thouhts and info with people from all over! Just like Linda, I'm amazed at the level of knowledge on this board. I love CL, but as a mom who works full-time, I only have time to try the occasional new recipe (one reason I love the feedback on the BB). I'm astounded by the number of readers who try 3 or 4 new recipes per week! Plus I love all the helpful hints and suggestions when you have a question. And I love it when I can find a lost recipe for someone, or offer a suggestion. This board is definitely addictive! I think this is our almost-21st century, hi-tech coffee klatch or over-the-backyard fence discussion group. Technology moves on, but people still like to talk and share!

Yes, this is the only bulletin board I log into every day, at least once. The contributers are all so knowledgeable and friendly. I often feel like we are sitting having tea discussing new menus. Thank you everyone for sharing your recipes and experiences.
Hi ya'll and welcome! I've been on the BB about 5 months now, so I guess I'm still a youngin. But addicted, YOU BET! Now that I'm back to school I don't visit as often, but you know I'm here as much as I can be! KimKelly, we're neighbors! After hearing from all the easterners and Canadians, I was glad to find a neighbor in Sunny San Diego! Ya'll are talking about moving, but...you don't find many people who want to move away from here!
Well, I just love hearing everyone chat, great topics, yummy food, awesome ideas and fun personalities! Everything I've tried from the BB and the magazine (yes, I'm a subscriber now!) has been great! My husband's even impressed!!! THAT says a lot!
Thanks everyone for being here!

Sounds like someone needs to develop a twelve step program for this bulletin board! And yes, I would have to join it. It all began this past summer. It started gradually...first 15 min. a day, then 30, an hour, 2 etc... now I'm an addict too!!! I've been reading CL for several years now, but just started reading the BB this summer. I got my mother hooked on the magazine, but she does not have a computer. It sure is nice to hear all the feedback on recipes both in CL and from other BB readers. And what a bonus-to learn other peoples tips, techniques etc.... It is a valuable source of information. And best of all-friendly too. Thanks, Karen

misstapioca, I don't have much of a sweet tooth but my mom makes the most wonderful date squares. I'd have to say it's about the only desert I ever ask for! We go hiking at Lake Louise all the time. I've been all over the world and it's still one of the most beautiful places I've seen! Next time I will look for the cafe you mentioned. What better way to end a day of exercise than with a yummy treat! P.S. are you sure you don't want me to send you any snow....there is plenty in my backyard!!!LOL....Erin
Great thread! I too am a relative newbie, I discovered this site about two months ago and am definitely addicted!
I hail from Toronto and share the problem getting some items listed in recipes. Luckily my in-laws are in the US, so I have the opportunity to stock up a few times a year. Welcome to all the new faces!

Hello, my name is Melissa, and I'm a CL BB addict.
I love reading all the great postings, and I too, feel like I know some of you well just through your postings!
KimKelly-- your posting about pesto in Kentucky cracked me up!!!!!!! I am an Indiana native (Evansville in the Southwest corner--- far from you Lindrusso!) and have now moved to Lake Tahoe, California. Let's just say NO ONE here would ever be confused about pesto (or avacados or sprouts!)
It's nice to know where all of you hail from!!! Very interesting stories!
Another Canadian checking in...I didn't know there were so many of us on here! I'm in Vancouver, BC. The biggest problem I have is not being able to find a lot of the fat-free products, like cream cheese, cheese, ricotta, etc. We have the low-fat but not the fat-free...so all the nutritional info in the recipes is off! I make across-border trips every couple of months to stock up. Oh well...it's worth it to know the pleasure of Nanaimo bars!! (I don't know how Americans live without them!)

Hey Jen,
I hear from a very knowledgeable source (jd of our supper club!) that you can now get Philly fat-free cream cheese here in T.O., so maybe you can in Vancouver too! I have also been able to find fat-free ricotta here for many years, and it works well in all types of recipes.
Oh yeah, I also have trouble imagining life without Nanaimo bars, date squares, butter tart squares, poutine, and all the rest. Hmmm, sounds from this list like we Canadians are shockingly unhealthy eaters!!! Not necessarily true!!!!!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Hi I'm also fairly new to the BB & would like to introduce myself also....I'm a single working Mom living in upstate NY. Lately I have been actually cooking more of the recipes in CL instead of dreaming that someday I may get around to it. I think the reason is that cooking these recipes is actually fun & they really come out just as good as they look. Also I find that this BB is very friendly & helpful to each other.

Missi - my parents actually live Grass Valley, about an hour oustide of Tahoe. We love Lake Tahoe. I can't tell you how often I've visited the area. In my younger years (PK -pre kids!) Another Canadian girl here, also from Toronto (Hey jd!). Glad to meet you all. Though we cannot always find American products here, I find that we also have a lot of products that are not in the U.S., so I guess it comes out even.
By the way, if any other Torontonians are interested in a supper club, we still have a bit of space left and would love to hear from you on the Supper Club Bulletin Board. Happy cooking to all!

Hi Everyone!!!
I too am totally addicted to the cooking Light BB, my husband jokes with me about my addiction all the time, hmmmm I wonder if there is some kind of CL BB annonymous I am sure there would be lots of members!! I am fairly new to the BB, and spent a long time just sitting back and reading before I got brave enough to post. Once you do it you realize that it isnt bad, all that knowledge is very intimidating!! I love reading about everyones views and personalities. Its like having extended family, you think I bet Gail would love this recipe or I wonder where Ed has been. Well welcome all you newcomers we will be seeing you around from Burnaby Canada.

Hi,
Another abdicted member. I am originally from St-Hyacinthe,near Montreal, Canada. At 21 years I start living all over Canada. Presently I am living in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I get the same frustrations as everybody in Canada about US products. Sometimes when I am in the states I bring back favorites.
I wish long live to this board and I thank Cooking Light for giving us the opportunity to vitually communicate with Cooking Light Lovers.

Hi All!
I've been on for a few months now and yes, count me in among the addicts. I work full time, am married and have two little boys. I love the CL recipes--makes me feel good to feed my family healthy meals. I like to try 2 or 3 new recipes a week from CL--but sometimes we get hooked on a favorite....filet mignon in mushroom wine sauce, to name one!
I have lived in NH my whole life and am moving to RI--tomorrow!! Yikes. I am assuming that RI will have all the great access to gourmet items that I have now. NH is very small and I would never call it sophisticated--but I have never had trouble finding any recipe item, so I guess I have been fortunate.
I am also training for the Dublin Marathon on the 30th and ran my first half marathon yesterday. I love to get advice on these boards on the best recipes to try. Keep 'em coming!

I am also addicted to this BB. I am just now posting some, instead of only reading. I love what someone said about sitting around and talking at the kitchen table. It really does feel that way. I have just been listening up until recently, so maybe I will join in. I have asked a few questions, and everyone has been so nice to answer. I live in Texas, but I am originally from Tenn. I miss the beautiful fall season in Tenn. I am married with two kids and I am a SAHM. I love this board. It lets us talk and meet people from all over the US and beyond that we would overwise never meet or talk with. Of most importance is our love of food, esp. CL for ourselves or family. This common interest unites us. Sorry, I sound like I am preaching.

Cookrrr:
Thanks for the info! I've been keeping an eye out but haven't seen any fat-free stuff yet (aside from the usual cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt, etc.). Usually Vancouver is pretty good about this stuff...we seem to have a lot of healthy eaters out here. But they seem to have missed the boat on this one. If it keeps up much longer, I'll have to try scouting some of the specialty upscale grocery stores in town to see if they have them in yet.
BTW, I'm toying with posting a Nanaimo bar recipe for all the non-converted...but maybe we shouldn't share our secret?!? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Welcome newcomers and hello to Peggy and KimKelly. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif!
As a fairly new member (since August) I must also say that this board is addicting - great people from all over, very informative and a chance to exchange ideas with other cooking fanatics!
I am a native Californian and "lifer" in Orange County, but my family is from the midwest.
Kim, I cannot blame you for wanting to retire in San Diego because I love it and would move there in a heartbeat! I go down there about every other month to the zoo or animal park (I'm a member)!
Peggy, I am about to confess something that shocks others when I admit it: as a native Californian, http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif I have not been further north than Monterey. No, I have never been to San Francisco and I plan to do so within the next year. I have been to South America, but not San Francisco!
I hear that it is beautiful up in the Redding area and frequently have fantasies about getting out of Orange County because it gets more crowded all the time, and from visiting family in Michigan, cold weather is not for me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif Everyone try to have a happy Monday!

I too have become addicted, but I don't have a computer at home (we're about to order one any day!), so I sneak on while I'm at work. I therefore REALLY try to control how much time I spend here, but it's so hard! I get to reading on an interesting thread (like this one http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ), and I just can't stop. I've been on the BB for a while now, and I sorta come and go, but I always know where to get cheery advice and great recipes.
I'm originally from Montana, and I haven't seen anyone on the BB from there. I lived north of Baltimore for a while, and now I'm in Cincinnati. (I always smile when I see Phoebe's posts, since her UserName is Ohioan.) I really like Cincinnati, but I miss the Rockies! (Rocky Mountains)
For those of you who live in and around Calgary, my husband and I spent our honeymoon in Banff. And that was in February! We don't mind the snow and cold, and the scenery was absolutely spectacular! We'd like to come back sometime in the summer though.
Welcome to all the new members -- it's fun to meet new people and come to a place on the internet that feels like extended family. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hi, Becky, I'm glad I can give you a smile -- even if it's just about my username! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif But really, I'm not laying claim to being THE representative of Ohio; I was just kind of at a loss for a name at the time. In fact, I'm not even a native Ohioan http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif , although I've been in Columbus since 1984. I'm originally from New York City (the Bronx, to be exact), and at various times have lived or been stationed in Utah (Salt Lake City), Wyoming (Cheyenne), Mississippi (Biloxi), Texas (Fort Worth), Louisiana (Baton Rouge), and the Philippines.
When I was tenured at my university, my first and happiest thought was, "Hooray, now when someone asks me where I'm from, I can finally give a straight answer." http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
Cheers, Phoebe

i think it would be a good idea if we kept the Naniamo Bars a secret..Sorry folks..i am willing to divulge it though to people who hand out green cards..would make my life easier. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
What a delightful thread! I've been cruising the BB for about a month and have become a closet addict (my husband wonders what I'm doing on the computer all the time!). I love the midwest (just moved from Indiana to Iowa), but have family in TN, OH (Cincinnati), KY and NJ/NYC so feel I get the best of both worlds (just need a west coast connection now). This is indeed just like having coffee with friends! My burning question is, when does one graduate to "member" status? Do we need to pass a secret test??? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

no special test..i think it is when you have posted 50 messages...i guess its no big feat, i love talking about what is going on in my kitchen with people that are actually interested!

I just wanted to say 'hello' to all my fellow Hoosiers out there (and good morning to everyone else as well!) I must have missed this delightful thread the past week and just stumbled onto it now.
I live in downtown Indianapolis and love it. I've always dreamed of trying someplace else out (CA, VA, NC, MI)for awhile, but my whole family is here and I'll probably always live here. Indy has really been changing alot lately, although it is still very flat. We have a Wild Oats now and there are so many new restaraunts downtown, people actually have a reason to come down here. Used to be, downtown completely cleared out at 5:30p.m.
Well, its been nice to meet everyone. I love to hear about where you all live and do. I've learned so much from this board and just wanted to thank everyone!
ps..I'm a complete addict myself and don't want to be cured. I love it!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Beth,
Used to live near Zionsville and miss so much of the Indy life. I especially miss the zoo, children's museum and downtown life! What's new? Are you living in the new "refurbished" area?
BethH
10-11-2000, 10:27 AM
Hi andi!
I do live in the 'refurbished' area and its great. I can actually walk to an Ethiopian restaraunt! I never thought I would be able to say that! More and more restaraunts, etc. keep coming here and its so exciting! We are getting 2 new restaraunts near the mall, just got a Starbucks on the circle, a new brewpub-- replacing the horrible Planet Hollywood that went out of business and a new 'authentic' irish pub! Good times for the downtown!
I stopped in to Starbucks the other morning before work for some coffee and I swear, it was just like living in a real city! Silly, I know. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif I'm sure some folks outside the midwest are sick of Starbucks but its our first one. Trends come here slowly.
What made you move to Iowa?

Thanks to all of you good members - I am delighted to be a part of this!
This is so true. I went out of town, and couldn't check the boards for a week and a half. (Las Vegas..Anniversary. It was wonderful. Took a flying tour of the Grand Canyon. Ate the best salad of my life at Bertolini's in Caesar's Palace.) I was so upset when I came back and there were about 3,000 more e-mails since I left.
By the way...Mrs.rebers kitchen table is REALLLLY big!
Anyway, Hello from a fellow southern girl!

I'm fairly new too and from the Chicago area. I've learned so much from this BB. The recipe reviews are great and the tips from others are so helpful. I am truly addicted also...can't let a day go by without checking us out. I've been reading CL for years; unfortunately didn't save all the issues - but I love the conversations and the exchange of information. Thanks to all of you.

Hubby's job got us here and we have family near-by. We still have great friends in Indy/Fishers/Zionsville so we stop and visit when we get some vacation time. I'm so glad the downtown area is staying viable! I love that mall. You've really wheted my appetite for all those new restaurants-I'll have to get my buddies to take me when I visit http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Andi,
I read that you recently moved to Iowa. I grew up there (in northwest Iowa, Lake City) and moved to Indy a little over a year ago beacuse of my husbands job. We are hopeing to move back near Sioux City, Iowa someday as that is where both of our families are! If anyone in the Indy area has info on good resturants to check out please let me know! My husband and I usually go out to eat at least once a week and are looking for new places.

Okay, I have to admit it. I'm a complete sucker for these boards. I'm pretty new here but I've been sucked in http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I also wanted to say hi to my fellow New Yorkers. I used to live Upstate but now I live in NYC, which is why my kitchen is the size of a shoebox http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Another Canuck here...Hi everybody!
My problem is living in a small town where there is only one major chain grocery store.
And it's even relatively small.
ErinYYC will know the town...Canmore, Alberta. I moved here about 1 1/2 years ago from Eastern Canada and didn't know anyone other than my partner...so I've found this board to be a lifeline. Thanks:-)

As a lifelong Indy resident, I just wanted to fill you in on some of the tasty restaraunts in town. These are some of my favorites by region:
Downtown (where I live):
Ruth's Chris/Palomino/Bertolini's/Buca di Beppo/etc. --these expensive chains are always excellent. I've never had a bad meal at any of them.
Kona Jacks--seafood
Malibu on Maryland--good pasta
Mikado--seafood (excellent but expensive sushi, Sakura on 71st and Keystone is a much better deal and just as good)
Rathskellar--German, great beer
Agio--trendy location, italian
[I mentioned some of the new places in my previous post to andi]
Broadripple-area:
ambrosia--italian
Broadripple steakhouse--steaks and southwestern
Mezzaluna/La Jolla--good people watching spots in the summer (food at La Jolla is not that good!)
Mama Corollas--italian with a romantic atmosphere
Hollyhock Hill--family style fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Great comfort food.
Jazz Cooker--cajun-ish, great live jazz
Shalimar--great Indian food
Castleton/Geist area:
The Blue Heron--lakeside dining, really fun in the summer, good food (but under new management and might change the name in the next few months
The Melting Pot--fondue, one of the most romantic spots, be sure to cook in the broth instead of the oil
Bravo--tasty italian chain
Outskirts:
Our favorite place is called Bonges Tavern (its off SR 37 going north) Its a total hole in the wall with great food. You must take a road trip here!
Geesh! I went on and on, didn't I? I guess it shows how much I love to eat!? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif I hope this was helpful. There are tons of places I didn't mention also. I only talked about places I've actually frequented myself. BTW, I'm also well versed in Bloomington cuisine, in case you are going. Just let me know if you have any questions about anywhere else! Have fun eating out.

Hello everyone! I check the board everyday! I am always hooked up to the internet in the office, and just leave the board up and check in every now and then. I've been married for 2 years now, we are kidless (we get our fix from our two nieces), and we live in Cincinnati. I grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, and then moved to Minneapolis, and now Cincinnati. I love learning a little more about everyone here! Thanks to all for sharing. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

It has been awhile since I visited this thread...
KimKelly - I was born in Berkeley, raised in Concord and spend a large part of my adult life in Pleasanton. Definately a Bay Area girl until recently...
Wendy - It IS surprising that you are a California native and have never made it to San Francisco! I must say it is one of my favorite cities in the US. OF course, there is so much to do and see in Southern California, you probably don't need to venture further up the state. I am glad to hear you will be visiting SF soon. The Redding area is beautiful, but the pace is so much slower than you are used to, you would probably go into culture shock if you visited!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif I certainly did when I first moved here!!!
Nice to know there are other Californians on the board!

Thanks for all of the ideas! We have been to a few of these places already but I will have to try some of the others! We really like Bravos and we also like Puccini's for italian too!
