Ok... I'm into the poll thing at the moment! I was at my local Costco today picking up the Halloween candy and I started wondering what you all got? Do you get one that you like so you can enjoy the leftovers, or do you get one you don't like so that you won't be tempted??? We got the gummy savers as my son begged for them, and then the KitKat, Resess Peanut Butter cups AND crisps as my husband and I love those! The bag didn't even get home before my husband dug in.
Last year I was so excited when the evening was over and I dumped the last of the remaing candy into a trick or treaters bag. Then... my son and husband came home with their own overflowing bag of goodies - more than we even gave out... just can't get rid of the stuff!
Happy Halloween all!

I get a few bags of the good stuff (got mine at Sam's Club this year) - Snickers, KitKats, Nestle Crunch, etc. and a couple of bags of the cheaper stuff - Tootsie Rolls, Smarties, etc.
Our neighborhood gets hit really hard every year, so as much as I'd like to give out only the really good stuff, it's just too darned expensive. I also like to keep small bags of goldfish on hand for the little ones who could choke on the candy.
Now, my theory is to give away the good stuff first and leave the cheap stuff for last so that I don't have all that tempting candy lying around - however, my husband usually finds a way to keep a stash of the good stuff around. Sigh.....

I try to get something I won't mind [my husband] eating in case we have leftovers... This year it's twizzlers. An added benefit (I only like candy in small doses) is that after eating "too many" of them, I feel sick--so I won't be too tempted. Plus, as candy goes, I like twizzlers so I'm not embarrassed to give it out. Hope the kiddies do....

we also went to Costco (have been for 3 yrs) and got the BIG bag of the mixed candy, lots of things we dont like (that way, we dont eat alot of it! lol)
I was a little disapointed, cause the price went up to 7.99 and a couple yrs ago it was only 5.99! oh well!
Last 2 yrs, we had TONS of leftovers, and Id send baggies full w/dh to work for all the guys! lol Now we live in the big city, may not have any leftover! lol

We give out my husbands favorite candy which is Nutrageous. He buys it, gives it out and eats the leftovers.
Happy Halloween!

Last year, my roommate and I bought blow pops and tootsie rolls..not as bad for you as Snickers and stuff. It was all gone, though, at the end of the night so it didn't matter. We had to start apologizing to the kids for not having any more! When I lived at home with my parents, I always liked to get the good stuff, as Lindrusso calls it, i.e., Milky Ways, Three Musketeers...I always hated getting things like dum dums and jaw breakers (my apologies if any of you buy those, I was a high maintenence child) My personal favorite, though, is candy corns. We never gave those out, but I LOVE them. That's why I never buy any! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif They'd be gone in a second!

Honey is off and we went candy shopping at Target. They have a good sale on candy. Got bunches of fun size candies (milky way, snikers, whoppers, poppy pops, butterfinger, tarts, almond joy, ...) We get a lot of kids on Halloween I put all candy downstairs until Halloween (too much temptation http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Definitely get stuff we like. We only have between 10 and 15 trick or treaters, and I ALWAYS buy too much...oops. KitKats, Nutrageous, Reese's Sticks.
I am trying so hard to stay away from the candy aisle this year! We are living in an apartment right now and will be moving the weekend after Halloween to our new home- just in time for Thanksgiving!
Anyway- There are a few children in the apartment complex, but not many so I may get one or two bags of candy (good stuff of course!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif ) and see what happens. I can not wait until next year when we will be in a neighborhood and can decorate for Halloween night and see all the trick-or-treaters!!!!

I usually always get the good stuff too! I'm not much of a candy eater so most of it does not tempt me. I keep a half dozen or so 3-musketeers in the freezer(the only way I'll eat them-can't stand chocolate straight up or at room temp.!)These usually last me all year for when the rare sweet craving hits. I usually get M&M's since my husband likes these, and smarties(he loves those! We are living in a brand new neighborhood. We were the second people to build just over two years ago so that halloween was really dead!(pardon the pun!) Now all of the houses are done(except one) so I'm expecting a bigger turnout. And less leftovers.

I went to Sams Club and bought the boxes of the regular sized bars of kit kat, nestles crunch, twix, and some kind of sour patch thing. My favorite is frozen snickers - notice that I didn't buy any, I have no will power!
Halloween is a favorite holiday for my MIL, she gives out the giant 1 lb Hershey bars. She has been doing it for years and now people who got the bars bring their kids, she just loves it! I bet she gets about 400 trick or treaters.

We get so many trick-or-treaters... we've averaged around 16-18 regular sized bags of candy over the last 4 years! My husband & I definitely go for the good stuff and feel it is our duty to polish off any leftovers. We mostly indulge in chocolate (I know, not "light" fare) like Nestle Crunch, Reese's PB cups, Milky Ways, Twix, etc. but also pick up a few bags of Skittles, Necco wafers, Sweet tarts, etc. for the non-chocoholics. We don't have kids but we have a ball dressing up, as do the dogs, for our Halloween visitors!

Hey Mrs R, how ya feeling today?
Since this is only our second year in our house (we used to live in an apt. in the city, so no kids), I've gone hog-wild with the candy. No holds barred - this year spent over $25 at Target. I figure its only once a year so why not have fun and buy the good stuff that everyone likes (including us...). The only time I become a scrooge is with teenagers. Frankly I get annoyed at 15- and 16-year olds walking around (or even worse...driving) with their walkmans on and holding their backpacks out for candy. So I always have a bag of "crappy" stuff on hand for them. Halloween is for the kids!!!

SusanD I totally agree with you and about the 15-16 year olds! My daughter is 16 and she loves to stay home with me for the first couple of hours to hand out candy, then it's either a teen get together at our home or one of her close friends. I usually start off with 2 large bags of the good stuff, but then I always have to stop at the store on the way home because everyone has dipped into the big give away bowl.
Happy Halloween everyone!!!

My husband and I tend to get the good stuff also. We always have some leftover. Since the candies are so small they make great lunch time snacks. One or two at a time is better than going down to the snack machine and buying a full size candy bar. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Hey SusanD, I am alternating between feeling great and feeling tired now, which I hope means it's slowly subsiding! Good thing I really am not into sweets or I would've dipped into the Halloween candy by now!! Hope all is well with you!

Susan,
I couldn't agree more! I keep some of that icky black and orage candy for the people who come dressed as surly teenagers!

Food girl,
Do you mean those molasses "kisses" that stick to your mouth and are sickeningly sweet? I've done that too - "saved" them for that special occasion!! I've met about two people in my life (if that) who actually like them! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Those are the worst...the ones that come wrapped in the orange and black waxed paper! I've also never been a big fan of the Dum Dums - one bite and they're gone. But I'll tell you what, I think I'm the only person in the world who likes Smarties.

Um, I must be one of those people! I love those things! Then again, I also love molasses. Also, for the record, I also happened to be one of the 15 year olds who went trick or treating. I was in the 10th grade, and my friends and I had Peter Pan syndrome. I dressed up as a flower (I even made my own headpiece with a hairband and poster paper petals), my other girlfriends dressed up as a toddler, a pumpkin (she wore the same suit she wore when she was 10), Ophelia and other cat. I'd say it was a favorable alternative to joining the rest of our class at keg parties, rolling houses with toilet paper and smashing pumpkins (which also happened to me, by the way, when I was a little girl and absolutely devastated me.) Enough rambling. Happy Halloween! This year, I'm handing out Hershey's assorted miniatures (keeping the Special Darks for myself http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif ) and Tootsie Rolls.

we get so many kids in our neighborhood, I never have any left overs, so I buy the good stuff and start snacking on it so we get some returns for the $ spent. As for the 15-16 year olds, do what my friend does, make them perform, ie: sing the abc's, do itsy bitsy spider, whatever, if they don't perform no candy is her response. It seems to work for her. anyway good luck and Happy Halloween to all!

I buy all the stuff that I wished I had gotten on Halloween when I was a kid. It's all mostly chocolate, but I also buy one bag of something non-chocolate because there are actually kids out there who don't like chocolate at all. I could probably get away with 3 or 4 bags, but since I have to offer a variety, I get about 5. I also give away 2 or 3 peices of candy at a time-especially towards the end of the night. Since we aren't usually around until 6:00pm and the kids are only allowed out until 8:00pm in our neighborhood, we end up with leftovers every year. Gee, what a shame!
I have to get peanut butter cups and peppermint patties. We like those. I also got three muskateers and now and laters. I think that's it for this year (like that isn't enough!)

Now I know why I never buy chocolate. The bag of Hershey's assorted miniatures didn't make it two days before I broke into it http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif. That was supposed to be for the kids, (except for the special darks, of course), but I woke up at 2:00 in the morning last night, convinced that the reason I couldn't sleep was that I needed to sample each type. Only three squares, so I guess that's not so bad. I think I've decided Mr. Goodbar was my favorite http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Gosh, I can't wait to give it all away tonight!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

I put all the candy in a big plastic bowl to make things easy for my husband. Of course he promptly grabbed some candy and put it in with his lunch for today! Bad!!! Oh, and my husband absolutely loves smarties. Way too sugary for my taste, though. I hated getting them for Halloween. Hey, I see nothing wrong with a 15 or 16 year old trick or treating as long as they put the effort into dressing up as something. We always get those few stragglers towards the end of the night who think big jeans and a big sweatshirt is some kind of costume. It is a bit ridiculous. I stopped going door to door at 14, and even then I felt a wee bit too old.
I do have one friend who dressed up and went around with her step son when she was in her 20's! She said she got candy from everyone, except one woman who yelled at her. I had to laugh. She is definitely a chocoholic.

Okay, I've been a good girl, haven't touched my stash AT ALL (unlike my husband who's all but emptied the bag of kit-kats), but let me tell you I'm looking forward to pulling out all those goodies tonight! I've got quite the candy buffet planned - M&M's (both kinds), Snickers, Nestle Crunch, Reese's Cups, Nerds and Blow-Pops. Watch, we'll only have about 20 kids and I'll be stuck with all the leftovers! Happy Halloween to all!

2 weeks ago we bought a big bag of mixed candy & I didn't open it until last night. Much to my surprise, we had 3 trick-or-treaters tonight! So now, I have a huge bowl full of candy. I am going to take it to work tomorrow so it doesn't end up on my hips

Happy Halloween, everyone! I gave out Reese's peanut butter cups (my favorite), M&M's and Skittles. I'm a chocoholic, but always have a non-chocolate choice for kids who can't eat or don't like chocolate (or peanuts). We don't have many trick or treaters, so I always get stuff we like. I know, I know, temptation, but it's just once a year, and I try to behave myself. I decided I was too old to trick or treat when I entered high school . . . then, that Halloween, I felt so bad, I dressed up in an old costume and went to 1 or 2 houses, just so I was still a part of everything! My 13-year-old daughter commented tonight that Halloween wasn't as fun as it used to be . . . she'd rather go to a party. They grow up so fast!
Okay KimKelly, we were probably in Costco San Marcos at the same time buying the same bag of Halloween candy. I took my husband this trip and I thought my candy bag needed to go back because by the time I got home there was a hole in the bag... Guess who?!

Goodness Debg... how did we ever get the only two bags at Costco with holes???? Ours was missing a number of the resses' Peanut Butter Cups when we arrived to our house too! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

PS.... my mom's group is trying out the Cafe Sevilla next Monday, I'll let you knwo what we think!
