View Full Version : "Election Poll": Dinner Tonight

Natasha

No, I'm not asking if or how you're going to vote. All questions of actual politics aside (please!!) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif , this is simply a lighthearted poll of how the election will affect everyone's dinner plans. Will it be dinner in front of the TV so you and/or SO and/or kids can follow the coverage? Take out or delivery (hey, there's nothing wrong with that). Or a home-cooked, sit-down meal - CL, of course http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif - as if it were any other day? You get the idea...

Natasha, I really like this question!
I live in a small apartment, and my kitchen looks out over the sitting room, so I will absolutely have the television turned to face me while I cook...but I will certainly cook. I plan to watch the election results from the time I get home until, well...
I drove home from Atlanta (1 1/2 hours away) to vote, because I'm registered with my parents' address, (I must say that I am extremely proud of my dedication to politics in this election http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif ) so I can't wait to watch the results. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
By the way, Natasha, didn't you have a race recently?

It's dinner in front of the tv as usual for us. It's terrible, but we don't have a dining room table and only a counter with stools in the kitchen, so we eat on the couch in front of the tv every night. We will eventually get a table, but since it's just my husband and I right now, we aren't in a hurry- plus we need to find the "right" table. We also plan for a new couch soon and we will NOT be eating dinner on a new couch! So tonight, it'll be chicken cutlets, mashed potatoes and broccoli. It's a one of our favorites, actually. Should be a good presidential race, though!

Am totally into this election so will be glued to the TV tonight... except when I switch over to watch an hour of Dick Vitales Slam Bam Jam preview of college basketball (will be checking results during commercials then!). So we're having an easy dinner... roasted red pepper pesto pizza from last month and a salad. Our kitchen table lets us still see the TV (isn't that horrible?? [wicked laugh]) so we'll eat at the table.

Mightyh I am also having the roasted pepper pesto pizza. It is a new found favorite in my life. So easy and tasty. YUM. I however will not be watching the basketball previews, thank goodness my husband is working tonight, so I don't have to watch sports. I'm just not into it and he is a fanatic. It somehow works for us, it has for 10 years anyway. I will just turn on the TV periodically to check the results. I really don't like TV. Too much noise. I have enough noise from my three little ones, I just don't need to add to it.

We're having leftovers tonight. My husband will drive up (2hrs away) and we will vote this afternoon but not watching the tv...tired of all the Texas bashing and inane comments by "political analysts". Will be just as happy to read the results in Wednesday's paper! It's definitely a movie night!

I'm actually going to an Election Night Potluck party tonight (and we hope it will be a party - most of us are voting the same way). I'm bringing the Spicy Autumn Crisp with some vanilla ice cream. Maybe an appetizer too but don't know what yet. It's going to be a long night!

My kids and I will be watching election results (they are only 8 and 11 but are VERY interested in the whole process). We will eat dinner at the table though with the TV off; I can miss it for the 15-30 minutes we are eating. Dinner will be homemade white pizza (olive oil, garlic base, with tomatoes, fresh basil, onions and parmesean and mozzerella cheese) and salad.

I have been very involved with the whole process, more locally, but will be glad when it is over.

I will be checking the election results occassionally, but to be perfectly honest, I am so tired of all the negative campaigning that I will be glad when it is all over. Since it's just me (hubby works 2 1/2 hours away and is only home on the weekends) I quite often turn the TV off and read a book. I won't be staying up any later than normal, finding out the results in the morning will be just fine with me. I voted before I came to work this morning. Dinner is going to be Chicken with Wine Cream Sauce and a potato of some sort.

My husband is very "into" this election so I'm sure that the TV will be on tonight. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif Dinner will be Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Soup, Spinach Salad with Beets and Oranges (both from the Complete CL Cookbook) and Sun Dried Tomato Semolina Biscuits (Nov '00). I will be more interested in how my dinner turns out than in the election results!

I actually have a meeting tonight at 7:30, so everything will be a bit rushed.

I plan to make linguini with clam sauce for dinner, race to the polls and then rush to my meeting http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I'm really wrapped up in this election, but my husband is less so. I'm sure he'll humor me, though, and eat in front of the TV with me tonight. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I'm planning on making my favorite minestrone recipe, from Cook's Illustrated (sorry CL!), and I'll serve it with a really crusty sourdough bread. I think it's going to be a long night! BTW, I love hearing about what everyone else is doing tonight - great question!

Danielle

Just tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for us tonight! Or maybe the CL Fettucine Alfredo. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Laura, the white pizza sounds delicious! Would you mind posting? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Danielle, I don't have a recipe, just something I came up with. I use olive oil, about 3 cloves of garlic and about 1/4 c. of parmesean cheese and spread over a pizza crust. I just kind of add enough ingredients to make a paste that I spread around. I then add mozzerella cheese, add sliced tomatoes, sliced red onion and fresh basil on top of that and sprinkle with more parmesean cheese. I use that ready made pizza crust by Pillsbury. I pretty much bake the pizza according to the instructions on the pizza crust. Sorry I don't have any exact directions, I will make it tonight and see if I have more accurate measurements.

It's leftovers tonight for me. My husband made the most wonderful Chicken Gumbo last night for dinner. I'll serve it with rolls and a salad. For dessert, I'm making Banana Pudding (a CL recipe). Never tried this before, but it sounds good.

My husband is also out of town (though he neglected to absentee vote, and I'm giving him a VERY hard time about it), so I'll be home alone tonight eating leftovers. I would make a nice meal for myself, but instead I'll be busy cooking the Fudgy Souffle Cake with Warm Turtle Sauce from the November issue for our CL Supper Club tomorrow night!

I am very interested in the outcome of the election, but not enough to be glued to the TV about it. I'm tired of hearing the opinion of every commentator about how the election will turn out -- I just want the final results! I voted on my way to work this morning, so after work I'll go to the gym, then come home & bake while watching Frasier, and I'll probably occasionally check the polls. But I DEFINITELY won't stay up late to hear the outcome -- tomorrow morning is early enough for me.

By the way, I'm really glad no one here is commenting on how they're going to vote or making snide comments about any of the candidates. Of course I expect such polite respect for each others' ideas & opinions on this BB! It's a bit difficult for me at work sometimes though, because I try to keep politics out of things, and it seems most of the people around me are fairly vocal in their opinions, which often are opposite of mine. I'll just be glad when all of the campaigning is over!

I just wanted to second BeckyM's comment about everyone being considerate of everyone else's views. I'm really into the election this year too, but as the black sheep voter in my family of six, I've had quite enough of political discussions! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Mrs. Reber, I envy your empty dining room! I keep telling my husband we need one more room . We rarely have people over for dinner, but when we do, every sits on the floor Morrocan syle or grabs a piece of the couch. During the summer we have dinner out on the terrace a lot and then I get to show off my cooking skills http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I was thinking about getting a pizza tonight but instead decided to have barbecued split chicken breasts on the grill & leftover Squash-Rice Casserole (from the Nov. 2000 issue). We'll eat at the table, but the TV will be on so that we can stay up-to-the-minute on election results. I'm nervous about this one. I probably won't be able to eat a bite if it's not going my way!!

I will be making vegetable biryani for the first time. I have a few recipes and will probably combine information. I hope that my dinner is not a surprise outcome as it seems the election will be.

Be sure to give us a review of the cake recipe. My dinner club will be making it at the end of the month.

Thanks!

i'll be having my leftover winter squash cabbage dish...i'll have to doctor it up a bit.
here in ny, we not only have a close presidential race to follow--we also have a close, highly publicized senate race gnawing at us! http://cgi.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/cwm/crying.gif

Mrs. Reber,

I also do not have a kitchen table. Since I live by myself I just eat at the coffee table in front of the TV. When Jeff comes over for dinner, he thinks thats the way all households should be!

I will be glued to the election results. I made a chicken stir-fry last night and will have the leftovers tonight for dinner.

What a fun idea for a post. My husband and I both have a commitment tonight right after work, from 6-9:30, with no TV or radio access--I'm going to go nuts not hearing any of the results till that late! So as far as dinner goes--will probably be a can of slimfast gulped down in the car... However, we're going to an election-night party afterwards, and hopefully all the food won't be eaten by the time we get there! Maybe I'll make a post-election victory (or defeat, depending on who wins) dinner tomorrow night, using your great suggestions for tonight's menus.

We're having the raspberry balsmic chicken over some lovely smelling thyme mixed rice we found - second try on the chx (burnt the onion the first time around). We opted for a speedy meal as we'll be tuned in to the results. Although if it's hair-pulling I just might have to bake something to keep me occupied. I too will be glad its finally over but greatly appreciate these rights and responsibilities.

Okay, I have a 7:30 meeting too! No linguine with clam sauce though! I have a pot roast (not a CL recipe) in the crockpot which smells wonderful! I plan to watch the tube when I get home after my meeting tonight.

My husband is out of town (voted absentee) so with just the kids and I dinner will be something really easy. Probably pizza or mac and cheese. I like to boil the vege cork-screw noodles and then melt cheddar-jack cheese on top. The veges will be raw broccoli, rutebegas and carrots dipped in a blue cheese dip. The entertainment will be the political results on the radio. ps I am taking both kids with me to vote as part of the kids voting program.

Mrs. Reber, you are not alone. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but my husband and I eat dinner in front of the TV every night too. We have a very small apartment and opted for a comfortable living room area with a large coffee table instead of a dining room table. I'm going to vote after work, so I don't know if I'll have time to shop and cook. My husband really likes some Tuesday night shows, so I'll probably only get to watch the election coverage during the commercials. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

An election party sounds like great idea! I wish I'd thought of that http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Darn! You just reminded me that I forgot to take the pizza dough out the fridge - we WERE going to have calzones.

However since it's easier to defrost ground beef in a hurry than pizza dough, I guess I'll give the Chipotle Tamale Pie a whirl - I've been looking forward to this one! Or maybe I'll just make it with tofu - been eating a lot of meat lately from some big dinners I cooked.

We may or may not have the TV on in the background, but we'll be at the table at any rate. Usually it's TV off at dinner, but we'll see...

Sneezles you are 2 funny! Being a canuck - what do you gals/guys THINK is going to happen - very curious situation - will probably watch - politics VERY BORING here! We actually have an election here next week and I don't even know who is running in my area!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to make the Neiman Marcus cookies and eat them for dinner in front of the TV! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I'd really love to hear what you all think the outcome will be - don't have any other USofA'ers to ask???????

Venus, I'm glad we're not alone! It's become such a habit to eat on the couch that we don't even think about it anymore. We do want a table to put in our empty dining room. We only have a tiny table now that we really can't eat on. When family comes over, we improvise and everyone sits where they can find a spot. Luckily, we have a big sectional couch!

Today is my birthday and every so often, election day falls on it-like this year (like it or not). I am being taken out to lunch by my co-workers and will probably have the chicken with lemon caper sauce and broccoli. It looks great!

Since I'm off on Friday, and my boyfriend and I will be celebrating this weekend-much more fun than a tuesday election day birthday!

I will be very happy when the election is over as I am sick and tired of the mud-slinging commercials and looking at the campaign signs all over the area!

Valerie, sounds like my husband. He had a large outdoor table in his dining room when I met him. Redwood, no less! I don't know what would've happened to his house if I hadn't moved in. I got new curtains and shades, new bedroom carpet, made him paint the living room and dining room and had a new kitchen floor put in, not to mention got a contractor to do a new roof. And I'm still not done!!!

So for now, it's dinner in front of the tv. I have to say, we've grown quite used to it and it's kind of comfortable.

Some election, no? I just love all the excitement- we may not know for a while who the next president will be!
