View Full Version : Poll: Best Vacations Ever...
OK- It's SNOWING here! I can't take it yet! Anyway, I'm daydreaming about summer and vacations and wondering what have been some of your favorite vacations and/or where you would love to go if you had nothing holding you back. I'll live vicariously through you all! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Barcelona (last minute)
My husband and I just went on a spontaneous trip to Barcelona with another couple! We flew straight from Atlanta and spent only two nights there. It was a gorgeous and amazingly rich experience. What was so fun is that we went with three days' notice and only paid $299 round trip.

Well, mine's not actually happened yet, but, if everything falls into place, my husband and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary (in April 2001) with two weeks in Hawaii. I am so excited. We both have enough "points" built up on our frequent flyer card for free tickets and we are hoping to use two "banked" weeks from our timeshare for the room. Ideally, we want to spend each week on a different island. I'm not even going to be picky about which island! I have always wanted to see Hawaii but never REALLY thought I would get to. I would love any tips or suggestions from anyone who has been there before.

By the way, Andi, it's suppossed to snow here too. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Sydney, Australia! It was technically a study abroad trip, but it was a vacation for all intents and purposes. I spent one month this past summer living in Sydney and it was such a beatiful city. I cannot wait to go back with my husband.

St. Thomas was the best vacation I ever had. It was just last year, too, for our honeymoon. The food was great, we had a timeshare condo right on the beach- open the door and you were on the beach! We were there for a full week. We went blue marlin fishing for an entire day. What a thrill that was! We each caught one and then my husband was reeling one in and it got off the hook somehow. It was so relaxing and wonderful. We WILL go back there- especially to fish again. What an awesome trip that was. Mmm, that food was the best. We had a five star restaurant only a very very short walk from our condo- like thirty yards down the beach. We have the best memories from that trip. Couldn't have been any better.

My favorite vacation was also my honeymoon except since we live on St. Thomas we went north to the cold and snow of Colorado. We rented a car and drove all over for 10days. It was such a treat just to be able to drive forever and faster than 30mph. I loved it and would love to live there.
Mrs Reber where did you stay while you were here? I want to know if my guess is correct.
St. John in the US Virgin Islands is absolutely GORGEOUS! I spent some time on St. Thomas as well, but I have friends who live on St. John. What a life! The beaches are like no other that I've seen. If you're pasty white like I am, though, bring your sunscreen, because I got sun poisoning on the tops of my feet where I forgot to protect. Ouch! Still my best vacation ever. I cannot wait to get back down there -- especially when I look out my office window to a dreary, gray afternoon.

Monte Carlo, Monaco in 1997 where my husband took me as a surpise to get engaged. I didn't know we were going until two weeks prior because he couldn't find my passport so he had to tell me. The beaches, casino, food, wine, shopping was amazing and so relaxing.

The best was of course honeymoon in S Fco and Carmel,Big Sur etc following a stop in Fla (Disney) Second best Hawaii one year (nice weather while everyone was freezing back in MD http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif & as far as spontaneous and surprise Venezuela.
No snow here but it looks like it could (not cold enough though)
10 days in London. Saw 8 shows, loved every minute of it. Had lunch one day in a pub older than our country.

Greek Isles (specifically Santorini and Rhodes)!! Breathtaking views, beautiful beaches, lots of sun, interesting ruins, wonderfully romantic dinners... Can't imagine a better vacation.

Dare I mention Disneyworld? We went for our honeymoon in August and I am dying to go back. 6 days of delicious food, wonderful wines, scary rides, big cushy hotel rooms, outrageous swimming pools, fireworks, snuggling and fun! We were treated like a prince and princess, and the parks weren't too crowded at all. Going to Cyprus with my family runs a close second. The beaches are amazing--like a brochure--and the food is out of this world!

Bern, we stayed right on Sapphire Beach. Absolutely beautiful and it was the end of September so it was so very quiet there! We had a couple of problems when we first arrived- they put us in this horrible building next to the daycare center! Kids screaming like crazy! It was too late for them to switch our room that day so we had to wait until the next morning. Then, in the new condo, our air conditioning didn't work! We had to complain 2 or three times. When they fixed it, we had a constant stream of water running from the ac unit into the entranceway, but we didn't care. We didn't spend a whole lot of time in our room anyway, except to sleep. We met some wonderful folks, took a trip over to St. John and had our great boat trip on the Marlin Prince.
mine is tie between italy - 2 weeks of amazing food, wine and relaxation - and the turks and caicos islands - 10 days of amazing food, wine and relaxation. hey, i'm seeing a pattern here... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

While it wasn't exactly a vacation, my husband did have to work. We lived in Aberdeen, Scotland for two years and did a lot of traveling from there, Ireland, London (actually lived there for 6 weeks before going up to Aberdeen), Amsterdam, Germany. We did honeymoon in Hawaii and we were on our way to live in Singapore. I thought the weather in Singapore would be the same a in Hawaii...WRONG!!! It was a nice place to visit for about 3 weeks, tons of great restaurants, shops, etc. but we stayed 18 months! Houston's worst summer day-365!

Vanessa-My husband and I honeymooned in CA too! We flew into San Francisco, spent a few nights; then drove down to Monterey and spent a few nights in Pacific Grove; and spent some time in Big Sur. That was wonderful!
Another favorite vacation would have to be when I went to Kenya. My Aunt and Uncle live there and are hot air balloon piolets. Every morning we would get up and go on a balloon safari. And when we'd land the crew would set up this huge picnic breakfast. That was pretty amazing. I saw so many animals!
I also love Hawaii, I've been there 4 times.
Another favorite was Japan. As a teenager my best girlfriend moved there, so I was able to go and visit her a few times. That was really fun.
I love Bermuda too. I've been there twice. The beaches are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. And I love the mopeds.
I'm pretty excited, in December my hubby and I are going on a caribbean cruise. I can't wait!
I love to travel. And the benefits I recieve by being a travel agent is so great. So sorry to ramble! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Best actual trip: my trip to Tunisia -- it is a beautiful country culturally, physically and culinarily http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I'll never forget the gorgeous smells of the spices while walking through the medina!
Best hasn't happened yet trip: a trip to Greece. My husband and I would love to travel many places, but I'm looking forward to Greece the most. Great food. Sea swept air. How can it get better than that? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

A cruise in the lower Grenadines. Just my husband, two friends, a captain and a gourmet cook on a 52ft sailboat. A different island everyday with incredible scenery and food. No commercialization to be found on any island. Some were deserted!
I just had to mention that I didn't wear shoes for an entire week and not once was I cold!

I mention this trip all the time, so I'll apologize in advance for anyone who's getting really tired of hearing about it! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
This summer after graduation, my boyfriend and backpacked around Europe for a month...it was the most amazing trip I've ever taken. I love travel with a passion, and I have perpetual wanderlust. I felt like I could have stayed twice as long. The food, the wine, the pace of life, the culture, oh my gosh, I have to go somewhere soon!
By the way, Mousie 29, where did you find the low fares to Barcelona? I'm subscribed to about 4 different travel/fare saver sites, but I never saw that one!
[This message has been edited by emilycat (edited 11-13-2000).]
shoyski - how did you arrange your cruise? i have read about the windjammer cruises - they sound similar to yours, but a few more people. i would love to know what company you used. thnaks

It sounds like there are NUMEROUS travelers on this thread! Traveling is a big hobby for my husband and I.
On our honeymoon we toured the European Alps on a motorcycle for a month (way back in 1992). That is the way to see the sights.
One of our favorite places to go is New Orleans - and EAT, EAT and EAT some more. Second maybe, would be Santa Fe, NM-especially during Indian Market.
This past June we went to Grand Cayman Island and went scuba diving. We got our open-water diving certificate just a couple of weeks before we went. That, I am proud of. I've just turned 51!! Talk about feeling like I've accomplished something.
Enough-I'd better quit boring you all.

1. Western US in an RV
2. ITALY!!
I think the favorite place we have been is BooneBlowing Rock NC. It is beautiful with lots of great hiking.

Kwormann, I actually graduated about 4 months ago, and living in Atlanta now, but I love the Mellow Mushroom! They have the greatest pizza! There's actually one (or more, probably) in Atlanta, too, right next to my boyfriend's apartment complex. Sooo good. Have you been to Italy before? I love it, too. We were there for almost a week this summer, and it was one of my favorite places...I would love to take a culinary trip there; it was one of the most beautiful and culturally rich places I've been. I want to go back!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My husband and I went to Hershey Park for our honeymoon with the expectation (my expectation) that we would take a cruise for our 10 year anniversary.
Our 10 year was 1999 and we went on a Royal Carb. cruise. My DH only went because I pretty much forced him because he had promised 10 years earlier (I think he thought I would forget).
For us, turns out that cruising is the only way to vacation - parasailing, snorkling, jet skiing, shoppping, romantic dinners - and who would have figured... it was my DH's idea to book the second one!

Bummer Phoebe! I taught college level for six years and I know what this time of year feels like!! All the better to dream along with me!
Oh Wow!!! This has just been the best fun reading though these! The wind is howling outside and I can just feel myself relaxing anyway.....
I neglected to add my favorite! My husband and I had our honeymoon in St. Maarten (granted that's been 15 years but it was great then!). I'm like all the rest of you beach babes-give me those white sand beaches and crystal blue waters!!!
My hubby and I would also love to get to Italy, then Ireland-he's Italian, I'm Irish and I feel the need to explore our "roots".
By the way Cheryl, did you get snow too???? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

emilycat, I believe DH stands for "Dear Husband", however I am open to correction.
My favorite vacation was my honeymoon (we are a romantic bunch aren't we). We spent 2 weeks in Paris in museums & eating & sightseeing & eating & touring Versailles & eating & shopping & eating, I guess you all get the idea. The food was over the top. Surprisingly enough I only gained 1 pound, we did lots of walking & eating & oh sorry I always get carried away when I think of that trip!

I've been to Hawaii, Aruba, Florida, but I'd have to say my favorite vacation (so far) was two weeks spent in California. Started in San Francisco, drove north (in no particular order) to Napa (awesome) Tahoe (stunning), Reno (ummmmm no comment), Yosemite (camped there for 5 nights - El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridal Veil Falls are magnificent), then back down the coast to Carmel and Monterey. I live vicariously through the people who live along 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach............

Andi, St. Maarten is beautiful. I was there twice, once before the huge hurricane with the ex boyfriend and once after with my husband. I can't believe how many beautiful beaches were destroyed! My favorite beach, Plum Beach, was just about gone. So very sad. First time we stayed at the Royal Palms and the second time at Pelican. The food there was great, but a little expensive. We rented a jeep and drove all over the island. Very relaxing, but we had three days of rain at the end of the week. Apparently some big storm hit NJ while we were gone, too- it was spring of 97. We were out on a fishing boat enjoying the sunshine and someone asked where we were from. We told them NJ and they asked if we heard about the snowstorm. It was April!

Andi:
We didn't get any snow until late last night -- just enough to make the roads miserable and cover the grass. Weather forecast calls for more snow all week, possibly "large accumulations" on Thursday. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
I HATE THE COLD!!!!!
I have to add that one of our favorite places to go for long weekends is New Orleans -- the food, the history, the beautiful buildings and, of course, people watching!

My guess was wrong but Sapphire is nice.
You went fishing on probably the best boat around here. I used to work for a dive shop and would send people on the Marlin Prince all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed it here. Wasn't St. John beautiful?

BernK,
Isn't it funny, you want to come to Colorado for the cold and snow...Right now I am in Colorado with all the cold and snow...and...well, its...cold and snowy!
My favorite vacation was our honeymoon in Ireland. We rented a car and drove all along the east coast. It really was magical and beautiful. I cannot wait to go back again. We went in July, so it really didn't rain all that much.
I have never been anywhere tropical, unless you count Orlando, Florida. I would like to go somewhere like St. Thomas, or Hawaii.

Bern, when I was 17, my mom took my sister and I to St. Thomas, but we didn't stay on the mainland. We were on Water Island for four days. That was very pretty, too. Yes, I called a dive shop and they recommended the Marlin Prince. I can't remember the name of the shop now. I found them on line. I was determined to get my husband out deep sea fishing. He wanted me to catch a fish and I wanted him to catch a fish. Good thing we both got a chance. What a rush! We just loved the captain and the first mate. The day went by so fast!
Well I have to join in! My best vacation prior to being an adult was to London and Ireland in high school! I used to dance and we went over there to perform and PLAY!! I got to see CATS on the London stage- incredible!! One of the funniest memories from that trip- I ordered fish one night and was served the WHOLE fish- our table named him and then covered him with a napkin!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif I also got to kiss the Blarney stone on that trip!!
Favorite trip as an adult- Puerto Varellta (sp?) We spent 7 days there with five other couples- we stayed in condos and fortunately several of the other couples had been going there for years and new all the Wonderful places to go. We ate at a different place each night- all wonderful. Favorite things about that trip- Krystal beach, Eden, the food and drink, and the silver jewlery!!
For our honeymoon we went to Grand Caymen- also a wonderful time- totally relaxed and the food was great!!
We also go skiing every year with another couple- soooo much fun!! We drive to Colorado and play for a week!! We have been to Breckenridge and Steamboat! LOVE them both!! Unfortunatley we are not going this year- we have just moved into our first house and that has depleated our vacation funds- for a great reason however!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
Next year though- we are already talking about it!!

My best vacation was sailing in the British Virgin Islands with another couple. We had a 44 foot sail boat and did all the sailing ourselves. It was so wonderful. At night we would just sit and look at the stars the way the Indians did because there were no city lights blurring them. One night a boat full of French guys anchored near us and sang funny songs all night, what a kick!

My best vacation was last month, I spent 8 days in the US and British Virgin Islands. Having been to St. Thomas and St. Johns previously, most of this trip was spent in a condo on St. Croix. Lots of time on the beach, evenings at the crab races, sailing and snorkeling at Buck Island National Park, an overnight to Tortola (that was really great... incredible food at a neat resort), shopping in St. Thomas and a quick visit to St. Johns.

Probably the best 3 weeks that I ever spent in my life was in Colombia. Way, way back when I was in high school, I got to accompany a friend's family there. My Dad sent me as my graduation present.
We stayed in a hillside finca (vacation cottage), went to Cartagena, the mountains, saw very old churches and had lots of fun!
The nice thing is that I am still friends with this family after all these years (20 plus)and have a standing invitation to stay with my friend's mom whenever I want to.
As an adult, my vacations have consisted of visiting my sister in Michigan, taking the boat out on Lake Erie and visiting Canada.
This is fun but I need something more exotic! Last summer, we went to Niagara on the Lake and saw Niagara Falls. I must get to Europe before I'm too old!
Phoebe, for crying out loud, take a vacation! Maybe you can lead some sort of Shakesperian or literature tour through your university. Yes, you would still be working but you would get out!!

I think anyplace you visit can be the best vacation ever-- be it an exotic locale or someplace only a short distance from home. Great vacations are a state of mind, after all...
Now, if you ask me about favorite memorable travel moments I'd think of dining on river lobster along the banks of the Chao Praia River in Bangkok, wonderful Thai music playing in the background; or standing atop the Acropolis in the early morning BEFORE the tourists, inhaling the place and really FEELING antiquity; or our crazy, impetuous pre-dawn dash from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Peggy's Cove-- just so I could knock off a few rolls of film before catching a 1:00 ferry back to the mainland!
...really, I can't think of anyplace I've ever visited where I didn't find something to enjoy. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Wow. Great topic! I have several "best" vacations. When I was 13, my family spent a month traveling out west so I got to see all the great, beautiful sights out there. I loved it, even though I was at that age when it wasn't "cool" to be seen with your parents~ http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
When I was a senior in high school, I went to Florida with 7 other friends after graduation. Boy, did we have a good time. Of course, now that I have a daughter, I'll probably never let her do that, after having taken that trip myself!
My hubby & I went to Jamaica for our honeymoon, but our dream vacation has been planned for our 10th anniversary. We would both love to go to England, and my dream is to see Wimbledon. I played tennis for my high school and university, and I just think that would be awesome to see that. So, I only have to wait for another 4 years now! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
thanks shoyski - i will look into it.

Mrs. Reber,
We stayed at Dawn Beach when in St. Maarten but had lunch at the Pelican. I loved St. Maarten!!!! We also rented a car and drove all over the island. I loved the markets and the simple fact that half the island was Dutch and the other French. Some of the best food ever!! Did you like St. Maarten better than St. Thomas or is St. Maarten so changed that it's not even a contest?

I was feeling depressed that I have not been to any of the exciting places that people have mentioned, so was thrilled to see Boone/Blowing Rock, NC listed! We went there for a family vacation this summer and had a terrific time. Everything from the Tweetsie Railroad (a great touristy place for kids) to wonderful hiking. And we ate twice at the Mellow Mushroom -- fabulous pizza. For those who are not travelling with young children, Blowing Rock has wonderful shopping, both small specialty shops and outlet stores.

Well, I can't say that I have been anywhere too exotic. My best vacation with my DH was our honeymoon, we spent 5 days in Las Vegas and had a great time. When I was in high school my family went to Canada for a week, somewhere in Ontario. We spent most of the time fisihing. I didn't think that it was great fun then but now I would love to go back up there. I have dreams to travel many places. I really want to go to Europe and to someplace tropical. My husband and I are going to try and go to Alaska this coming summer for a week or so. Can't wait!

Andi, we enjoyed both, but found St. Thomas to be much more friendly. We just felt safer there, too, being that it's a U.S. island. Forget driving on St. Thomas, though. The cabs are convenient at least. We did run into a renegade cab driver one night. He was funny. They told us to watch out for them and look for the licenses in the cabs. The wild cows walking around were pretty funny, too. Saw a mongoose, but no white tail deer.
My brother told us to go to the Dawn Beach BBQ. Said it's the best one going, but the roads down there- Yikes!! I never did get to the bbq. The French side was beautiful, but we found the dutch side to be much more friendly. We went to eat lunch at this little bar on the French side. They ignored us for a while and then we finally got to order. I am going to sound like a real snob here, but it seems that if you can't speak fluent french, they don't want to talk to you. I know bits and peices and I was certainly capable or ordering a cheeseburger and fries, but they looked right past us for about 20 minutes. We did have the absolute best Heinekin ever on the island- and watch out for the beer- they put more alcohol in it down there! I destroyed my entire day drinking LaBatts Ice. Never again. Boy do they push the alcohol! We were trashed before 12:00 in the afternoon. I learned my lesson very quickly!

Italy (Tuscany)-for our honeymoon almost one year ago-Sienna is amazing!!! What a perfectly gorgeous town with the streets (pedestrian only) filled with wonderful Italians each night. The food in Tuscany is amazing and we can't recommend Sienna enough. Palazzo Ravizza hotel borders countryside/town and is a palace for cheap!
Flight to Italy: now Delta goes direct to Rome from Atlanta.
Emilycat-we are in Atlanta and near many Mellow M's! We get a Delta email with special fares! And they are direct flights, no less. Currently Santiago, Chile is $329.
I think the best vacation I've been on recently was a year and a half ago when my then-boyfriend totally surprised me with a trip to Paris where he proposed. He even knew where to find my passport so I was REALLY surprised! We loved it, and found people to be extremely friendly despite the stereotypes. I think we encounter more rude people at home than we did in Paris.
We live in South Florida (and have been around the state) & take a lot of trips to New York to see family (does that count as a vacation?). Also, we have taken about 4 caribbean cruises, so we have (too briefly) visited many islands. Our favorite islands so far are virgin gorda, grand cayman, & st. john.
We also spent a month in Israel a few years ago, which was very interesting. It's probably not so safe there right now...But then again, it was 'safe' when we were there & there was a bombing down the street in a crowded market. So you never know.
We'd like to plan a short trip to Europe for the spring, but we're not sure where to go! Maybe we'll just take another cruise... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I agree about the French thing-I've also heard that mentioned about Europe. My husband felt that unless you were fluent it wasn't worth trying to speak the language. I'd forgotten the Heinekin!!!!!
We may have to try St. Thomas next time...
