Everyone at this sight is so helpful and creative. I need your help!
I need as many cooking "sayings"(I am not sure if this is the right term) as I can find for a project I am in charge of. Here are two I already thought of :

1. Kiss the cook
2. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen

Can anyone think of any more?

There are a bunch of quotations in The New Basics Cookbook. "Wine is sunlight, held together by water" Galileo or do you want "Diet is "Die" with a "t?" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

There is a little book Cooks Quotations (collection of paintings and cooking quotes) by Helen Exley. Some examples are:

In cooking as in all the arts, simplicity is the sign of perfection

One cannot live well, love well or sleep well unless one has dined well (Virginia Woolf)

Too many cooks may spoil the broth, but it only takes one to burn it (Madelleine Bingham)

She did not so much cook as assasinate food (Storm Jameson)

Cooking is like love, it should be entered into with abandon, or not at all (Van Horne)

Small cheer & great wecome makes a merry feast (W Shakespeare)

No matter where I take my guests, it seems they like my kitchen best (PA Dutch saying)

...A friend showed me the kitchen in her new home with the words "this is my office". I knew what she meant. This is where I do the work I want to, the work I like and enjoy..
(Sashi Deshpande)

In the childhood memories of every good cook, there's a large kitchen, a warm stove, a simmering pot and a mom.

Life is so brief that we should not glance either too far backwards or forwards...therefore study how to fix our happiness in our glass and in our plate
(Grimod de La Reyniere)

The most indispensable ingredient of all good home cooking; love for those you are cooking for

There is a great book called "Consuming Passions" that is described as "A feast of quotations celebrating food and the art of dining". It contains thousands of quotes from people throughout history on food, wine, water, cooking - divided into separate chapters. It's a lot of fun to look through.

"Cooking is like love - it should be entered into with abandon, or not at all."
Harriett Van Horn, Vogue Magazine 1956

I'll toss in a few more:

Unquiet meals make ill digestions.

He is an ill cook that cannot lick his own fingers.

Kissing don't last: cookery do! or, Kissin' wears out; cookin' don't.

Candy

But liquor

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the great quotes. Please, keep them coming. This is the project: I am in charge of a women's group. Each meeting we have a speaker and do a creative activity. Next meeting we are painting chef style aprons and the women will choose to put a recipe or cooking quotes around the edge of the apron and decorate in the middle. I hope it is a good idea! By the way, Sneezles didn't you say you were from Houston?

Thank you for the laugh! I had to share with you that # 1 - I've seen the above chocolate one on a friends return address label. And # 2 - the second quote above makes me laugh out loud every time I read it. Thanks for sharing such a good feeling!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I'm sure there are others, but here are some that come to mind. By the way, what part of Houston are you in ktcarley? I'm up in The Woodlands.

I've made my favorite thing for dinner -- reservations.

You can never be too rich or too thin.

Chocolate, it isn't just for breakfast any more.

Chocolate, the breakfast of champions.

Life is too short to drink cheap wine.

Life is too short to eat bad chocolate.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

A day without wine is like a day without sunshine.

Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy. (I could substitute other things there, like chocolate!)

These are not hors d'oeurves, this is dinner.

My kitchen was clean yesterday -- sorry you missed it.

Fantastic thread! I have friends who have used sayings like these stencilled around a kitchen or dining room; aprons sound like a lot of fun!
Here are some more:

Garlic is as good as ten mothers. (Les Blank)

Sex is good, but not as good as fresh sweet corn. (Garrison Keillor)

When one has tasted watermelons one knows what angels eat. (Mark Twain)

The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude. (Julia Child)

While the pot boils, friendship blooms.

No matter where I take my guests, it seems they like my kitchen best. (Pennsylvania Dutch saying)

This sounds like such a fun project. I noticed on another thread that people had included pictures; when you're finished, take a picture of the aprons and post it! Or, better yet, one of the ladies wearing the aprons!

Hi,

I like all the quotes you fine people have put on this thread. There have been some about beer and wine. So here are a couple in that vein;

A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to
thank her.

--W.C. Fields

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

--Henny Youngman

Well, I came across those and I thought you might enjoy them. I really liked the quote from Beth's Father-In-Law;

"I love to cook with wine... Sometimes, I even add it to the food."

I think that's just great. And even though I don't drink Alchohol I might just use that line sometime.

Well here's a couple of cooking and Kitchen type sayings. How about; Being in hot water?
Or telling someone that they or their idea is half baked?

I don't think those have been on this thread so far. And I'm certain there are many more sayings that have to do with cooking but right now I can't think of any more sayings, but there are some poems I remember for kids called;
"Old Mother Hubbard"
"Little miss muffet"
"Georgie Porgie"

And I'm sure you fine folks can think of more Kids poems and rymes that mention food and Kitchens. I can't right now, it's been so long since our kids were little I'm kind of out of practice with nusery rymes.

O.K. here's some more sayings I came across.

"Your Goose is cooked."

"Jumping from the frying pan into the fire."

"Boiling mad."

My Dad often took part in cooking family meals, which was a great boone to my Mom, we were a family of 8.

He had a favorite saying which my sister painted on a bbq apron for him. He loved it, wore it all the time.

His saying: "Who's The Best Cook in the World and Why Am I?"

I remember reading two -- probably in the old Womans Day Cooking Encyclopedia.

One was attributed to Beethoven:

Only the pure in heart can make good soup.

The other is Byron:

For man, the hungry sinner,
Since Eve ate apples, much depends on dinner.

"Eternity-two people and a ham." (I believe this was Samuel Johnson, but I'd authenticate it before I'd staked (bad play on words)too much on correct authorship Maybe it was his biographer, Boswell.)
