View Full Version : Help with Mastercook Problem???

I am having problems inporting recipes into MC. I highlight the text and put it in the corresponding recipe fields. I click on "add to recipe list" then click on "list" then click on "save to Mastercook". Normally a box pulls up saying " one new recipe has been added to to trys". Now that box doesn't pull up and the info that I put into the MC sidebar is lost in cyberspace. Can anyone help me? I turned off my computer and started it again. I reinstalled MC 8. Same problem exists. It's worked beautifully for a long time. TIA Darla
I've heard of a handful people this happened to after they installed a Windows update, and possibly an antivrus program update, within the last couple of days. Others did the updates without any effect to the web bar.
After you uninstalled MC 8, did you go back and delete the entire MasterCook folder and everything inside it? You should, of course, copy your cookbooks and other personalized files off to another location first. If any files remain behind in that folder, the installer might not write a fresh copy of all the files from the CD.
Another thing you could try, short of reinstalling again, is to repair MC 8. Go to Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs. Select MC 8 and click the Change/Remove button. When the InstallShield Wizard runs, pick the REPAIR option.
After the repair process is complete, I'd go ahead and reboot the computer (after exiting all programs/closing windows).
If you also did an antivirus update, you might also want to check its settings to see if they have changed. You could even DISable your antivirus for a little while - just long enough to go to the web and try a single test recipe.

Pam - thank you, thank you! I printed out your reply and gave it to my husband. Ten minutes later, MC is back up and running. You are always so helpful to those of us who are MC challenged!!! Darla
Excellent news! I'm glad that worked.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I just noticed I was having the same problem. I have mastercook Verson 8 and running on windows xp.
I went to repair and I got an 1603 fatal error with widows installer. I then tried to remove and got the same error. My XP is the most up to date with patches and I tried removing another program and it worked fine without any errors. (I also rebooted a couple of times and tried it with both the CD in and not in the drive) Any suggestions? Thanks
Error 1603 is an InstallShield error. I don't know why it would seemingly affect just MC and not another program, but it sometimes works like that. Here's a link to an InstallShield FAQ about it, and you can find more if you google:
Unfortunately, that is a hard error to troubleshoot, since it's system-specific. Maybe the info file the installer writes with every install got corrupted somehow?
In some cases when MC won't uninstall, we've recommended people just delete the entire MC folder and everything inside. Then reinstall in the same location. Preferably, they would then do an uninstall that did work. Then install again for real. Kinda crazy, but that would be pretty sure to get the registry entries squared away properly. You do want to be sure everything is working as it should because you put a lot of work into your recipes -- if something is wrong with the installation, you put them at risk.
But -- since you're getting that error now, it could pop up again when you reinstall. If you have Thanksgiving recipes you need to get to, I'd suggest you wait until after T-day to try all this. Use other methods to import in the meantime. Worst case, you might end up needing to reformat your hard drive and start fresh. Not fun, and hopefully, not necessary.

Thanks for the link. I had to install the "Cleanup installer", that then allowed me to remove Mastercook. I also went and deleted all other files related to Mastercook so I could do a clean install and turned off my anti-virus software. After all that I was able to install it again and it appears the web browser link is working as it should. My only problem then was getting back my backed up files that I had saved to a stick drive. I ended up opening them up then doing a Save As as I could not find anything in MCv8 that let you "restore" backup. Good reminder to keep backups on other things then the hard drive. Just wanted to let you know I appreciated your help.
I'm really glad to hear you're back in business again! There's no automatic "restore" for your backed up files -- you use Windows Explorer to copy them manually back to the folder they came from. There's a list of files and the folders they belong to plus instructions for restoring at Topic 1, "Backing Up Your Files" here (http://mastercook_cupboard.tripod.com/mastercook_5_installation.htm)
