Ok, I'm not really thinking I will find an answer to this. But I thought I would give it a shot. The IT guy at work will try to troubleshoot it Monday, but otherwise I have the Geek Squad coming.

In March, I got a wireless router and my Dell printer a wireless adapter. The Geek Squad set it up so that my two laptops (work & home) could connect through the router to the internet and could print wirelessly.

So naturally, this week, work gave me a new laptop. I was able to configure it to connect to the internet and my work internet. I was able to load the drivers and configure it for the wireless printer.

But, when I go to print the test page, the printer opens for the wireless printer (I know it is finding it ok, since it thinks that my ink cartridges are low -- that's another story). But then it closes that window without going forward to the actual printing.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what else to check to try to fix it. Which is why the appointment with the Geek Squad. That appointment will cost me at least $130. :( So any ideas of something else to try?

The printer was set up with its own port and it looks to be the exact same as what I have on the other laptops.

Btw, this is why I HATE computers.

I feel for you - when my printer decides to uninstall itself it causes my whole computer to not shut down properly and I get blue screens of death.

But my thought as I read this was shouldn't work pay for the geek squad if you need it now and your IT guy can't help until Monday? That way it would be ok no matter who fixed it (and save you the stress).

I wish!! Essentially, I am allowed to work at home 2 days / week. Not required to. So I pay for my home setup, not work. They would be just as happy if I came into the office those 2 days.

So in the big scheme of things paying the $ isn't the worst thing to happen. Just would avoid it if possible. And if I absolutely had to, i could use the USB to connect the laptop to the printer every time I wanted to print. Just wouldn't be convenient, since the printer is hidden out of the way . . . because I have wireless printing.

Theresa

Are you logged into a VPN to access your work stuff?

I work from home now and we are wireless however I can not print wirelessly when logged into my VPN. It has something to do with the security my company has. Knowing who you work for, I would bet your company has some pretty heafty security as well. This could be your problem.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Jalapeno.

It might be something like that. I can print wirelessly from my old work laptop even when logged into the VPN. So I was hoping that it is just me not being able to figure it out with my new one.

Or course they could have put additional security somehow on the new laptop that prevents this. :(

Well, here's hoping I don't pay $130 for nothing. I will test out trying to print without logging onto the VPN. That at least will give me a data point to go by.
