Just curious how much you spent, if anything, on your turkey this year. Please also post how big your turkey is and whether you bought it pre-cooked.
I'll start: our turkey is a 10 pounder, pre-roasted, from Whole Foods. $60.

Ours is a 20 pounder(couldn't find one bigger) and cost $13.40.

I voted in the under $10 range. DH's work sent us a gift check towards a turkey, and I spent that, but had to make up an extra $2.00, so technically my turkey cost me two dollars and some change. It's 22 pounds and frozen, so it's thawing as we speak. I only hope it's thawed tomorrow so I can brine it.

I didn't buy a turkey this year, but I usually do. I get a kosher turkey from the kosher deli. It's usually around 15 pounds and costs around $55.00. Uncooked. BEST turkey on the planet though - worth every penny!

Ours was free when you spend $100. We spend that on groceries many weeks anyway, so a free turkey is a real bonus.

Got a 12 pound frozen turkey at Ralphs. .37 cents per # with a $25.00 minimum purchase of other items. Used coupons for TP, Papertowels etc which was taken off AFTER the purchase was totaled.:)

I don't think that's unreasonable at all. Wish I had a good source.
I just got my turkey. Fresh, kosher, a bit more than 11 lbs, it was $22 and change but we had a $20-off coupon for the store.

Our local Food Giant was running an ad for .68/pound so DH and I went to pick up our bird. Got there and there was a caveat - limit of 1 per person (we needed 2) and you had to purchase $20.00 worth of groceries otherwise it was $1.29/pound. So, DH got a buggy, I got a buggy, we loaded up $40.00 worth of groceries and 2 12-pound birds and got out of there for $60.00+/- It was worth it though - the only other place to buy a bird around here is Walmart and THAT is enough to buy elsewhere.

Organic (from DeKalb Farmer's Market, for Atlantans on the BB) - about 11 pounds, $23 I think.

I was looking for a bird around 20+ pounds (11 big eaters and I want a lot of leftovers.), but there was only one to be had--a 23 lb. Butterball for around $25. Since I was unsure it would fit in my roasting pan, I opted for 2 14 lb. birds for a total of $16. One will be stuffed and done in the oven as usual and the other will be done in an electric roaster.

Couldn't vote, since I wont' know $$ till wed. when I pick them up.
I've ordered 2 20-22 LB, fresh, organic, free range from whole foods.
I'm hoping that Aggies 12lb for $60 isn't an indicator of how much mine will cost

I voted free since I got a 15 pounder with my (over) $100 grocery bill this morning. I've stowed Tom in the freezer, though, as my SIL is hosting. She bought a local organic Turkey, and I'm curious to find out how much it was.

I just picked up our turkey from a local farm. We have gotten our turkeys from him for years. They are heritage breed, free range, organic, etc...
20# turkey for $65
(Normally it would have cost us $80, but since he misplaced our order for a smaller turkey, he knocked $15 off)...
They cook so much faster and I love that they are fresh so no need to defrost - just need to find room to keep the tom cold (it's in a cooler right now, no room in the fridge!)
Mine was free and I have a 25 lb one in the freezer for Christmas or New Years that was also free. If my dad also picked up a free one, we will have a year's worth (cuz I know who will be cookin that one too ;) ) We also have a Honeybaked Ham, but no one's ginving those away this year. :D

My 14lb fresh, organic free range turkey from whole foods was $30. If you ordered them on-line you also get a $5 off coupon so I only paid $25. Seems like less than last year for the same size...

just DH and I and we prefer dark meat so we get the turkey thighs.
We purchased 3 of them. They were $1.29/pound so about $7.50 total.

We got 2 turkeys even though we're going to friends' this year. :o There were 2 price points - you could get under 16 lbs for $4.99 with your Safeway card, and $5.99 over 16 lbs with your Safeway card. there was another brand that did the same thing, different sizes with your card. DH got one from each price point, and they are both in the freezer. I'm debating going back for the other 2. I guess we'll see if I'm up for it when I go to the store tomorrow.

I can finally weigh in on the price of my turkeys. We are having two - we're frying one and it is a free range fresh turkey weighing just over 14 pounds and costing $35. Since we are having 13 people and can't put larger than 15 pounds in the fryer, I am purchasing a smoked turkey from Hoggy's restaurant. That one will be between 12 and 14 pounds and will cost $29. So total cost for 2 turkeys is $64. Happy Thanksgiving!

We just picked up our birds tonight. We got 3 (one for tomorrow, one for Passover in April and one just to have when we want turkey) from a local farm. They are organic, free-range, etc.
We have bought from him for the past 5 years and they are the best turkey we have ever had.
This year the price went up a bit. Pricey, but worth it. They were processed yesterday morning and we picked them up at 7 pm.
They were small this year, I wanted a 20 pounder but got a 17.75 pounder.
$2.75 per pound so just under $49 dollars for the bird. We have 6 adults and 4 kids, so won't be much leftover!!
I had asked for 2 large birds and one small, somehow I always end up with smaller than I want. He had some birds over 20 pounds, but for some reason mine wasn't one of the big ones. Next year I will be more specific. I did tell him, but what can you do.

We bought a Honeysuckle frozen bird, about 20# for under $18. Sure wish Kroger did the free turkey thing, as I've spent over $500 there in the last 2 weeks!

Just got back from Whole Foods (what a zoo!). I paid a little over $83 for both. $1.99 per lb. :D I agree, think less than last year.
We went with the ole Butterball.
12 pounder. $16.
I keep thinking I'll try a fresh, organic one of these days, but we love the way ours come out after brining.

Well, not to spoil the party, but it does seem like a lot more of the folks on this board are choosing Organic, Free-range and in many cases local.
It isn't so much about the taste (although I must say we could not believe the difference the first year when our farm turkey came the week before T-day (processor mix-up) and so we cooked and ate it and bought a Butterball for T-day, we swore never again, the quality was unbelievably different. The Organic, free-range birds are just raised in such better conditions (for the most part) and not fed so much JUNK as the factory-farmed birds.
Here is a website about some of the atrocities in the poultry industry.

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but we're not doing a turkey this year! :o Since it's just Dave and I, I'm making the Chili Roasted Chicken with Roasted Garlic Gravy on my rotisserie. Making all the traditional sides though, Cranberry, Apple, Sausage Stuffing, mashed yukon golds, homemade cranberry sauce, his *urp* Greenbean Casserole, and a pumpkin pie. We're not big on leftover turkey, and this is just more practical to us. Besides, we're more into the sides than anything else!

Oh, don't tell me that. I am headed there shortly to pick up our turkey. I was shocked that this afternoon, when I went to AJ's to pick up our pie from the bakery, there was NO wait at all! I was hoping for the same at Whole Foods. :o

Ours is just a little under 24 lbs, .79 per for a total of $18.87. DH will de-bone it tomorrow while I make the stuffing. Deboned it takes less than 2 hrs to cook. We have been doing this for a few years now. Everyone really likes it this way.

We are lucky enough to live a few miles from a farm that raises turkeys . Our turkey is Locally grown 24 lb bird, killed this past week. $46 Fresh, never frozen. Taste is unbeaten and worth the price.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone. :) Debralynn

Lisa, I'm sure you're right. I am making turkey for Christmas Eve this year (hosting my family). So maybe I'll give it a try while the taste of the factory-produced brand is still fresh on my taste-buds. :D I really don't know why I haven't gone this route yet.
Have a good one!

Wow, that is expensive. How much per pound was it, the other poster at WF said it was only $1.99 per pound, but they do have various types and prices of turkeys there.
You should see if you can locate a local farmer to get one from next time (look at localharvest.com or eatwild.com) and maybe it will be cheaper (and many times better for you and the environment).
As to the taste of the free-range, organic, etc. birds, I hope no one is dissappointed, it still taste like turkey in the sense that it isn't something you will completely notice. However, to me the birds look cleaner (less bruised, etc.) and just taste fresher and cleaner and I find them to be meatier than counterparts. We brine ours to keep it nice and moist, but I must say it is good turkey and it is the stuff we aren't getting in our bird that is helpful, even if we can't taste that difference so much. We know our farmer and the birds get to run around outside and are slaughtered the day we get them, as well as they are never frozen (well until we freeze them).

I'm glad there are others who pay a lot for their turkeys!
We get a Kosher turkey, about $44 for a 16 pound bird. Of course, there is no source for Kosher (or fresh, free-range, organic, etc.) turkeys here, so I order it from Empire Kosher and have it shipped. That adds another $15. So -- $59 total for getting the turkey to my kitchen.

Rob and I just got back from his sister's wedding in SC on Monday, so we didn't think about getting a turkey until Tues evening. We went to Trader Joes, and they were out. It was too late to go to Costco, so we tried the mom and pop market that are so common around these parts.
There were 4 turkeys left, none under 20lbs. We picked the natural, Amish bird and paid $20. We love leftover turkey.
I would have gotten a smaller bird if I had a choice.

I purchased 2 22-pound turkeys at Vons. With 'member card' I paid 48 cents a pound.
I could have gotten a bird the same size elsewhere for 7 dollars, but I trust Vons quality.
The birds look really good.

Expensive but totally worth it!
There were only two of us so overall the meal wasn't expensive.

15 lb. bird from local farm (free range, vegetarian fed, and "all that good stuff" KristiB just mentioned) @ $3.25/lb. I didn't want to fool with picking it up and transporting it 8 hours, so I had it shipped to my mother - this raised the total price up to $67.
