View Full Version : ?substitute for arugula?
I read somewhere recently (probably CL or Bon Apetit but I can't find it so I am not sure) that you can often substitute feta for bleu cheese if you are not fond of bleu. Does anyone have suggestions for a substitution for arugula? I've avoided any number of recipes with arugula as a major component because I just don't like it (too peppery) but many of those recipe sound really good...if I could come up with a decent aubstitute. Thanks in advance

Do you like kale, or another deep green?
Spinach might also work, although you'll definitely have a different effect with a more mild green...

Hi Marie,
If you are using it in a salad, why not try fresh spinach? I am not fond of cooked spinach myself, but I love fresh spinach, and if you enjoy cooked spinach, it would probably make a good substitute in hot dishes as well..........

Marie, if you're looking for a substitute cooking green, just last week I substituted dandelion greens for arugula in a recipe -- mostly because I happened to have them on hand. I suppose that's not much help, since dandelion greens are harder to get than arugula, but it's a possibility. The dandelion greens may have to cook a bit longer than arugula, though. Mustard greens might also be a passable substitute, since they're tender and somewhat bitter without being peppery. Or if you don't like the bitterness at all, how about swiss chard?
Anything there appeal to you? Let us know what works.

Sometimes I substitute arugula for baby spinach; I would think you could do the reverse. I prefer baby spinach to regular spinach..it does not seem as bitter.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I will try substituting spinach in raw recipes and chard or mustard greens in cooked and see what I think. Unfortunately, dandelions are one of the few things I am allergic to.
I love spinach...it's my favorite vegetable (preferably just wilted)
