View Full Version : Is anyone else confused by the new board?

I am a bit confused by the look of the new boards. Is anyone else struggling a bit with the "high-tech" bb? I'm glad it's back, though. I made a lot of "old" CL recipes in the past week or so -- including an outstanding flank steak recipe that I'll have to post.

I'm still trying to figure it out - although I think I like it so far. It really isn't all that much different, although there are definitely some added features.

I admit I'm a bit confused but I think in no time I'll get used to it and have fun with some of the added features.

I'm not so much confused as lost in information overload. I'm also not sure I like having that much information included about everyone everywhere... like how many posts on every one, how many per day in your profile. I feel a little over analyzed.

Hi Beth H!

Yes I'm a little confused by this new board too. I'm sure we'll get it figured out in no time at all though.

Well, I am thinking there is information overload. I don't think we really have to know how many times a post has been read. I am not sure what is the purpose of knowing how many times somone has posted.
I do like knowing where people are located but like with you Beth it doesn't give your location.
I am not really complaining just kind of overwhelmed by the new board.

I guess I'm kind of a technology junkie but I'm pretty happy with this new board. Maizeyoats, the reason it shows where some people are from and not others is because it's getting that information from our user profiles, so if someone chose not to include where they are from in their profile, it won't show this. Also, the old board did allow us to see how many posts a person has made or where they are from but you had to click on their user profile to find out.

I'm not sure how I feel about being able to rate posts or create "buddy lists" or "ignore lists." One of the really wonderful things about this board is the sense of open community--I'd hate for all these new add-ons to create clicks or bad feelings. Well hopefully the adage will be true: technology doesn't hurt people; people hurt people. ;)

I also would like to welcome everyone who has questions to post them because there are lots of helpful people who may have figured out what you are having trouble with.

I agree with you LGBurns. I am a little uncomfortable with the buddy list too and don't think I will be using it. One of the best things about this bulletin board is our sense of community and the buddy function is a bit "cliquish" and way too "elitist" for my taste.

I like most of the bells and whistles. It is kind of fun trying them all out. I agree I don't think I will use the buddie list (you are ALL my buddies!) I also don't think I would ever "rate" a post but who knows. I also think it is neat to see how many people have viewed your post vs. how many have posted to it.

The only think I don't really like is when you click on a post and you are then on the screen with all of the replies, I don't like how you can see where the person is from and how many posts etc. NOT because I am opposed to this info (I know you could access it before with the old BB) But because I think it looks too busy. I probably sound so anal! I like having the info but I rather "click" on the person's profile to get it.

It may take me a few days, but in general it appears to have more "bells and whistles." I do agree that I was unsure about the buddies list and the idea of cliques. I hope we remain the open and friendly group that we have been in the past. :)

Also, I really would hesitate to rate a thread in fear of hurting someone's feelings.

HELLO EVERYONE!!! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOO glad the bb is back! I've missed everybody.

This is my first post/reply since the "remodeling job". I've just played around with the new bb a little this morning. I will say I do like to see where people are from. All in all, so far I think I like it. As others have already commented, I don't know that I'll be using all the features but I'm sure someone somewhere will.

LGBurns - it is very much appreciated when you post helpful tips!

Well, after my initial shock and confusion, I now am growing to like the new BB. I'm not crazy about receiving e-mails every time someone responds to one of my posts -- btw, tech staff, I tried to turn that feature off, yet I still am receiving e-mails. User error, probably. I actually like seeing where people are from, etc. Like others, I'm not sure about the buddy system or private e-mailing. But, it's just great to have this resource back!

Beth-

You have to go into every post you made before turning off the email notification and edit them, and turn off the notification their as well. Hopefully, it won't be too many in the last 1.5 days :D

I just learned this lesson this morning. I can see where it can be of occasional value but getting an email everytime someone replies can be annoying. I wish that the default would be to not get email but have the option of having it especially when you need to know something in a hurry.

Gail

In that case, wouldn't you just click the "e-mail" notification on that particular thread, the same way the old board worked?

This board is somewhat confusing, but I am sure in time I will be able to figure it out! I am just used to going in and seeing things a certain way, now I have to read everything to figure out what I want to do!

WOW! I am totally overwhelmed! I just found out the bboard was back up! It looks awesome! I wish I had time right now to catch up but naptime is almost up! I've missed this bboard!!!!

I'm learning to like the new bb. But I'm a little confused about the buddy list too. I clicked on buddy and it said they are being added to my buddy list, I'm not sure who but they are added to my buddy list. I don't want just one person on my list, everyone here is my buddy. I'm not sure how to edit my profile or my buddie list.

Mandy,

I'd send you a private message, but I suspect that might be a little confusing, too!

If you click on "user cp" at the top of the page, you'll get to your personal "control panel" page. Your buddies are listed on the left side of the window, either online or offline, with quick links to their profile and to send a private message. Once on that page, you can edit your profile and/or options by clicking on the appropriate link.

Hope this helps!

Still trying to figure out this new BB... (a techno-wizard I am NOT!!!!) :)

Does anyone know what the "Close Current Tag" and "Close All Tags" means (when you are posting a reply)?

Also, why would we want to "rate" a thread?!! The theory behind that is completely baffling me!!!

And I DO miss the colorful little eek/embarrassed/mad/etc. faces we had on the old BB!

Lynn

I think the tag thing has something to do with the "vB Code." Click the help link next to the bold "vB Code" on your reply and it gives this info:

"vB code is a set of tags based on the HTML language that you may already be familiar with. They allow you to add formatting to your messages in the same way as HTML does, but have a simpler syntax and will never break the layout of the pages you are viewing. The ability to use vB Code is set on a forum-by-forum basis by the administrator, so you should check the forum rules when you post a new message."

Now what that means, I don't know!

Ralph,

THANKS! I appreciate your response. Wish I understood it!!! :)

As my Grandma used to say... Sounds like GREEK to me!

What I don't understand is how you tell which posts you've read. I thought maybe it had something to do with the envelopes to the left side, but appaerntly that's not right. Any ideas? I liked it when the posts you had read turned a different color.

Leanne,

It is the envelopes! If you've read a thread, and there are no new postings, the envelope is closed. It reopens if there are additional postings to that thread. See the comments about it on this other thread: http://cookinglight.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11296

WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! LOL I have not been able to access since the end of June! I am so excited to about being back here! I too, missed you all terribly. I am so thrilled with this new system. I am like a little kid in a brand new mega-sized toy store...my eyes wide-open, mouth gaping at all the great toys! I am still not sure about all the little buttons and what they will do for us, but I'm eager to learn. CL-this is awesome! Thanks for caring about your community and for working hard to keep us connected.

Leanne, you were right--when you have read a post the envelope goes from yellow or red and open to grey and closed. If you posted to that thread before the envelope will also show a big dot in the middle (like a seal). If this is not working for you, it might be because you are hitting the back button to get back to the page instead of choosing "Great Food" in the window at the bottom. Just refresh the page after you hit the back button and it should work.

Ralph -
OK - I read the other postings - thanks. Still have one question - closed means I've read it, but open can mean I haven't, or I have but there are new postings to the one I read? Is there any way to tell that you've read it before whether there are new postings or not?
Thanks again.

Ralph

Well, now that I've thought about it a little more, if the envelope is open, it just signifies there are new postings, regardless of whether you've read it or not.

However, I have started to notice a color change in the envelope, like LGBurns mentions in her post. That probably indicates whether you've looked at it or not. I just haven't correlated the colors yet!

Grace
07-11-2001, 09:31 AM
Nope, you guys - the color change is only to denote how many posts are in the thread - one color for fewer than 35, the other color for more than 35. After you've read some posts, hit refresh (or reload on some computers) and the ones you've read will close. Something else you can do to help, is to set up the page at the bottom to show posts from "the latest post" in descending order - this will set up the board the way the old board ran, and any new postings will bump the post back up to the top of the page. That will also help you remember which ones you've read and which ones you haven't.

Note: It is 1:39 PM Eastern time. Now check the time this message has on it.

I like the boards, but I'm curious about just where their 'clock' is located. Somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic?

Duuh (just got back on to edit this): GMT time. So we're basically in Europe. Cool! Maybe I can skip over to Paris???

My board shows you posted at 1:40 pm. You can change the time in User CP at the top of the page. Just click around and you will find it.

You get to set the clock yourself!

Click on "user cp" at the top of the page.
Then click "edit options" and you'll find the clock setting on that page!

Thanks, Ralph and Funnybone! I have done so and am now in the Eastern US again. Darned near submitted CET, though. In spirit I could have been in Paris and Venice... ;)

Diana -

If you go into your USER CP you'll see a section where you can change your preferences.

Go there and you'll see that you can adjust the time zone to suit yourself.

:) Happy exploring!
