View Full Version : Coffee and Thirst or Dry Mouth
Before the forced vacation, somone posted a question about noticing dry mouth after drinking coffee. I had noticed the same thing on an occassional basis and think I may have found a clue. I like my coffee HOT, and making espresso and steaming milk sometimes gets it hotter than the brewing itself. I think that a slight scortching may result in the dry mouth sensation. Perhaps letting your coffee cool just a bit will help more than the brand or type of coffee.
I don't remember who posted that question, but if you read this, I am curious. Are you also a HOT coffee drinker?

Kind of ironic but I am addicted to Ice Coffee, even in the winter (and I live in Massachusetts so we do get winters!) but I can't stand hot coffee. Things that make you go hmmmmmm ;)

I think that may be caffeine a mild diuretic, so perhaps it's the dehydration effect you're feeling. I like coffee a litte more lukewarm and have to drink lots of water after my morning coffee.
I drink a lot of water, but the feeling I am talking about is dry mouth more than thirst -- if that makes sense. But it does cause me to probably double my already high water intake, and it seems passage of time is the only thing that makes it go away.

I agree with the dry mouth thing completely. In fact, I "treat" it with herbal tea. My regular drink routine is now: Hot coffee (1 travel mug)on the way to work, hot herbal tea (large mug)in the morning, water (24+oz.)lunch through the afternoon, seltzer (12-24oz.) dinner and the evening. Sounds a little wacky, but it works for me :)

I've noticed that after I have a diet Coke my mouth is completely parched. This is why I rarely drink sodas any more (can't do without coffee, though). I wonder if there's something in caffiene that's dehydrating the tissues in the mouth.
