So I have a large stack of like-new books, all hardbacks, that I'd like to get rid of. Normally I just donate books to the local historical society, which runs a used bookstore, or post them to paperbackswap.com, but these books are in such nice condition that I thought I'd try selling them and see if I could end up with a little extra cash for the holidays.

I know at least a few people here have sold their unwanted books and wondered if anyone could offer some pros/cons of selling on Amazon Marketplace vs. Half.com... thoughts?

I have had good success with Amazon Marketplace and you may know I also sell on ebay. I tried Half.com, which is part of ebay, and I wasn't thrilled. It wasn't really the success/non success with selling but more that I wasn't crazy about the posting process and how the webpage looks when someone wants to buy a book.

I wish I could offer more specifics but it's been awhile since I tried Half and I never went back to it.

Amazon Marketplace is always surprising me when I open my email inbox to see the Sold! Ship Now! emails. :) And compared to ebay, there's no description to write or photo to take. The downside is the percentage that Amazon takes (vs. ebay fees) and the shipping charge limit.

Every book has a $3.99 credit for shipping. If you have a heavy hardcover book, even though you are shipping it Media Mail, it can come close to that price, whereas on ebay you have the opportunity to charge more money for something that costs more money to ship.

Go for it! It's fun! :)
