A college friend of my SIL's recently moved to Chicago. DH and I just got around to inviting him to a last-minute dinner for tomorrow night, which means nothing fancy, just good old home cooking. Of course we invited our friend over after I did my weekly grocery shopping (and for some unknown reason I kept putting cheese in my shopping basket, and it turns it, it may be my savior for a last minute nosh). While I have everything I need for the main course and salad, I've been mentally doing a mind-search of our cupboards and fridge for an appetizer and dessert. Here is what I can put together for an evening:

Warm goat cheese (or blue cheese) and rosemary raisin bread
Linguini with butternut squash and Prosciutto (Gewurztraminer)
Green leaf salad with PR shavings and Balsamic Vinaigrette
Honey Ginger cookies and coffee (maybe some of TJ's Sipping Chocolate, or we may even bust out some Port).

For a hodge-podge meal, does this seem to fit?

Works for me and especially for a Tuesday night. The linguine sounds great!

Sounds like a nice homey meal to me! I'd be an eager guest.

sounds great-- and for hodge-podge meal, you can serve the bread and cheese alongside the salad intstead of a separate course, unless you need the prep time while the guys are noshing.

Butternut squash chopped, salad washed and ready to go into the bowl, cookie dough chilling in the fridge, plenty of pasta in the cupboard...

Thanks for the feedback. I'm so excited but a little nervous. For me, sometimes it's better to not overplan, so this may be the perfect guest situation.

I pondered even needing a before meal nosh. I get home about 6:00, we're expecting our guest at 7:00, and I anticipate having dinner ready to eat no later than 7:30. The bread and cheese (and probably some wine) will be backup in case of hunger pains that need immediate attention. :p Otherwise, I think I will save the cheese and bread for the salad course.

I can't believe that's a thrown-together meal. Sounds impressive to me, planned or not. Enjoy.
