Hi all!
For the very first time in my life, I am entering the county fair. After enjoying it for so many years, I have decided to do so. The items (food of course) are due between noon and 7 pm today and I am leaving early so that I may attend to the finishing touches.
I am entering TamiK's Almond Roca (will send her the ribbon if I win), an onion rosemary focaccia (bread machine made dough), a goat cheese appetizer with sundried tomato, garlic and basil spread , my dehydrated roasted garlic powder and a citrus salad dressing.
Since I am just ok at baking (my friends like my baking but it is because most of them don't bake so that impresses them), I decided to enter more obscure areas as I may have a better chance.
Anyway, have any of you ever entered food or baked items in your state or county fair, if so, what did you make and did you win anything?

I entered a loaf of Lemon Verbena Bread in the Iowa State Fair about 2 years ago. My mom enters a lot of different things, cookies, breads, all kinds of things.
Let us know how you do!:)

Good luck! That goat cheese appetizer sounds wonderful. Would you mind posting the recipe? Thanks.

Wendy,
What a great idea! I just saw a production of "State Fair" produced by a local community theater this past weekend-(Hi, Lara- you must have seen this movie, having been to the Iowa State Fair!) I've been torturing the dog with renditions of "It's a Grand Night for Singing" and "It Might As Well Be Spring" ever since...now you've inspired me to think about making something for our own country fair...
Please let us know the results and the very best of luck to you!

Good Luck Wendy!! When I saw the subject, I was wondering if you were entering something with tomatoes ;) ! Be sure to let us know how it went. I haven't been to the fair since my nieces moved away 3 years ago :( (I still haven't forgiven their parents!).

Wow! I can't wait to hear how you do. When I walk around at our state fair, I'm always so impressed by all the gorgeous food people enter. And I think you're admirably gutsy for putting it out there for strangers to judge!

Wendy,
How Fun!
I wish you the best. I am sure your recipes are blue ribbon winners!
I had never even considered entering such a contest! Might have to consider it sometime!
Best of luck, Wendy. We look forward to hearing your report. I have never entered anything, but it was tempting when we were living in California. The summer DH and I did our first canning, we thought we about that category especially. A friend of our at work did enter and won with a lemon cake. Have fun!

Thanks everyone for your support! I turned everything in yesterday and it was fun! They were really organized and positive. I came in around the same time as this one woman who had a gazillion jars of preserves (she must have preserved the planet ) did. Apparantly, she does this every year. I overheard her telling one of the employees that she did more baking than canning this year: :D. I wasn't around to see her load of baked goods though. One of the ladies told me that some of the people turn in as many as 70 items!eek: eek:
At the same time, a favorite local bakery dropped off their entries (for the professional categories) and their work was beautiful and undoubtedly tasty! I am sure that Socal is familiar with French's Bakery. Diane, you really should consider going this year!
I will be on a "local" vacation from tomorrow through next week and will have limited computer access. I will definitely get ahold of one and let you know if I win or not. Thanks again for your support and well wishes. It means a lot to me.:

Good Luck!!
State fairs are so fun. My mom always had us enter drawings as children. Very fun - you always at least got honorable mention when you're under a certain age.
I entered a drawing a few years ago b/c I thought it would be fun. (My first as an adult!) I won 1st place & 25$. :) It's so much fun to have things entered in the fair. I will definitely do it with my kids. I may have to look into the cooking next time. My aunt used to enter flower arrangements & preserves.
This post just made me happy. :)
i think that is great that you are entering that. I think you will knock the compettion out of the water. BigTime my thoughts and prayers will be with you . Remember you are a Winner to all of us all.

Oh Wendy, French's Bakery??? You bet I'm familiar with that low-fat ;) establishment!! As a matter of fact, I only live a couple of blocks (if that) away from one. Luckily I can control the temptations (for the most part :D !!).
Hope you enjoy(ed) your 'local' vacation!

Oooh. Good luck. I've been wanting to enter for a couple of years now myself. If I can get my behind in gear and drive to my g-parent's farm to pick fox grapes, I may be able to enter some jelly this year (wild grape jelly is the best jelly around). Oh I want to go to the fair so badly now! It seems awful early for the fair, though. Around here, they don't gear up 'till September. And DH and I are childless and have no young relations, but we go anyway-we love the livestock exhibits, especially the roosters. Let us know if you win anything!
