Or does it really matter anymore since one owns the other?

Trying to decide what to do - we had XM in a rental van this Thanksgiving and really enjoyed it.

I think there are some things that are available only on one or the other - I think you can only get NFL on one, MLB on another, etc. So if there are some things that you really want access to, I would double check those first.

You can get MLB on XM. I love that!

The merger is going to represent a huge cost savings and it really doesn't matter which you go with, choose the one you like now, because the pricing will drop something like 46%!!!!. Specifically, it will allow you to pick 50 stations from each network. There will also be packages of 100 each at a higher rate.

That's why we have XM! Go Nats!

Both had jazz so I didn't care but DH hemmed and hawed and finally went with XM for the baseball and golf. He loved Howard Stern so this was a very hard decision for him (I'm really glad- I don't miss Howard.) Mostly he made the decision because I bought it for him for an xmas present.

Personally, I prefer the programming on XM. Maybe it's just the type of music I listen to, but I have XM and love it. A couple of times, we've ended up with rental cars with Sirius and felt like the variety/selection of channels was pretty limited.

Of course, my good friend is the voice you hear on several of the Sirius channels, so Sirius does have that going for it. ;)

I'm curious, Eva. What could you possibly been looking for that was missing?

But as I've already said, none of it matters, soon enough you can have plenty of both. Maybe the Nationals fan is also a Redskins fan, and under the merger, he can now have both teams, because NFL is on Sirius.

Well, it wasn't that there was anything MISSING. It just seemed like there was one of everything - like one 70s channel, one 80s channel, one country channel, one this, one that.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if the programming were really all that different on Sirius than XM. Maybe it's just what I'm used to. It just SEEMED different, like there was less variety.

With HD Radio coming out, I'm even wondering if XM/Sirius will be around in another year or so.

Hmm. Not sure if you had some kind of limited Sirius, but I know that I get quite a few country channels on Sirius ... the Pop channels have quite a few options ... I think there's about 3 NPR varieties, and I also get my channel 112, the Martha Stewart Channel. (Thank you Martha Stewart Radio!)

That's completely possible, since it was a rental car. Like basic cable, which gets you all of 10 channels. ;)

I got at least 12. I know that, because TLC, my regular Friday night companion, was channel 12. :)

Well, for anyone who'd like to enjoy or just try out Sirius, you can get a free three day internet trial. Nothing to lose, and you can listen while you work or just talk Christmas cookies. There's a nice classical Christmas channel running right now on the Classical Pops channel that's worth a listen.

This is a link to the listing of rock stations, the free offer is linked to the right of your screen.

If you have an online recorder program like Replay, you can record some nice stretches of music for your iPod, if you're so inclined.

Sorry I'm late chiming in here but DH said I should post this thought when I mentioned the thread to him...l

I am totally addicted to OutQ. It's Sirius' gay radio station. If you are straight, open-minded and enjoy some trashy humor (like me:rolleyes: ) Then you might enjoy it. That and it has opened my eyes to alot of human rights issues out there as well as censorship.

I bought a Sirius for my gf for her birthday in Sept. My only experience is with Sirius. I bought it for her mostly because she drives a lot and I live an hour away and she tends to go back and forth and I thought she might like it for the ride.

She has stated recently that she doesn't use it as much as she thought she would, but I think that's more because she's a channel flipper and it's distracting for her while she's driving. She can't use the home attachment because she can't get a signal at her house (too many trees?). So it wasn't exactly a successful gift.

That said, I've enjoyed it and we have used it successfully on a couple of road trips. I like the coffeehouse stations, Outq as well as the NPR ones. The comedy stations are great, too.

I've had both XM and now Sirius. I find the stations fairly comparable. If you are a Howard Stern person, you'll want to go with Sirius. He's only on there. Other than that, I can find pretty much what I want on either one.
Good luck with your decision.

I used to listen to Howard Stern before children. He was funny, sexist, and crude, but still sweet to his mom. However, now that we have children, I would not want them to listen to that.

Oh my gosh, I'd never let my kids hear Howard Stern either. Heck, I don't let them listen to (or watch, for that matter) most of the stuff that's out there.
