I know we have a lot of runners on this board and I was hoping someone could help me out. I haven't researched this too much, but am overwhelmed by what I'm finding online.

I want a wrist watch for my husband. He is not a huge runner, but has been wanting a new watch. He ran a 1/2 marathon earlier this year and is hoping to run a marathon next year. So, he is wanting to get back in to running more often. His watch has stopped working. I can not remember what features he wants :o and I don't want to ask him now, b/c this will be a Christmas gift.

So, I'm pretty open. Price range is ~$75, but I'm flexible. My co-worker has this huge GPS watch, but hers was in the hundreds. Not looking for that type of watch, just something for an average runner, not too big/bulky, looks nice and WORKS! I'm just really confused by what is a must-have feature and what brand is good.

Thanks, Michelle

DH requested this for Christmas:

Timex
IRONMAN* Triathlon® Sleek 50-Lap
Price: US $55.00
Product Code: T542819J

On a running website he found a version that, for about $10 more, also had a heart rate monitor. I'll look for the site and get back to you.

Oh yeah, DH is a runner who also did his first 1/2 this past fall.

I ditto the Timex Ironman watch (the Ironman part is just a co-brand, doesn't mean it's only for that sport). I've had one for many, many years, and so has DH. It's great for running, swimming & just hanging out.

At around that price point, you should be able to get one with a timer, lap timer, alarm & countdown timer (which I've started using a lot in recent years). They've also started making them look more stylish in recent years (my old one looks pretty utilitarian)

PS - I got a Timex sport watch as a gift last year (which I love, it's pink & very cute) but is very, very basic. It has a timer, but won't go over 59 minutes! The first time I used it for a long run it was frustrating. Now it's just used for hanging out (not training). So, be sure to ask.

A great Christmas gift!

Okay, this is the one DH specified. I found it at REI (http://www.rei.com). They also carry the heart rate monitor version, but it was closer to $100.

Now, part of what DH likes about it is that it's not huge. He's a thin guy, so giant watches look ridiculous on him.

Another Timex Ironman wearer here. It's comfortable, and the display is easy to read. I find it a bit of a pain to change the time on it but other than I recommend it :)

Good luck to your DH on his marathon, if he goes for it!!

Thanks for all the tips. I ended up getting this Timex Ironman 150 Lap Sleek Watch Item Number: 86311 ! Well, I bought it at Fleet Feets for $75 and then found it online for $50! So, I will just take the other one back and save me some money! :) Happy running!
