My boyfriend and I will be spending a week in Wells Maine the second week of August. We have been to Maine at least once every year. Sometimes we camp...other times we stayed in a hotel. This year we have a cabin which is nice as we can either cook there or eat out! We will be there for 7 full days so I need some ideas as to what would be good to prepare while there. We will but a little limited on cooking utensils (can't bring everything!) but will have most of the basics. A couple of days will be spent at the beach so portable is good too! Also...anyone know of any great places to eat that aren't "typical" (ie. Maine Diner etc...) ? Sorry for the long post but I have a runny mouth today!

For a restaurant that's not "typical", try Mekong Thai II in Ogunquit. We've had several good meals there. Of course, we also love the Maine Diner ;) .
If you're able to grill at your cabin, how about taking one of those inexpensive/disposable charcoal grills with you. No need for a lot of cookware for a grilled meal, and not much to clean up either.
Have a great vacation! When we were there in the spring, DH bought a kite and we had the best time flying it on the beach - haven't done that since I was a kid.

Most cabins or efficiencies (sp) have your basic cooking needs. One year we did have to buy a large pot at Ames to cook our fresh lobsters. We are move familiar with Ogunquit which is the next town over. Billy's Chowder House in Wells is the best for chowder, fried clams, lobster roll, etc. Their Seafood Chowder is wonderful as well as other chowders. You shouldn't have much problem for seating at lunch time but evening dining there could be a wait but worth it. For breakfast my recommendations are Condon's in Wells (Rt. 1), Omelette Factory in Ogunquit (Rt. 1) is the very best place for breakfast. Its a little place run by a lady named Cindy who does all the cooking with big smiles. Everything there is delish. Homemade quick breads are included as a side with her omelette plates. The list of omeletes are long and of course there are other breakfast entrees. Her waffles are wonderful and with a day's notice she will make her Gingerbread Waffles. Its a little hole in the wall type place and allways has a line out the door, but the line moves very quickly. I would recommend to get there early. You have to experience this place at least once because once you do, you will return again and again. Joan's in Ogunquit (Rt. 1, Shore Rd) is another local breakfast place. The decor is pretty wild but the breakfasts are really good.
Take a ride to Ogunquit and ride the trolleys to see the area. Get off at Perkins Cove and shop, eat or just sit with an ice cream and wait for some fishing boats to come in. If you are lucky, like we have been, you may see Former President Bush come in on his boat, Fidelity II and have lunch at Barnacle Billy's which is another place to visit for their steamers on the deckside. Prices are high there for lobsters and some dinners but its one of those places that "you have to visit". I guess its the location. Other restaurants at the Cove are very good....Hurricane, Oar Weed, Jackie's Two...take a look at their menus outside the buildings. While you are there in Perkins Cove take walk along the "Marginal Way". Its a paved walk along the ocean edge which is about a mile back and forth. Beautiful walk with benches to rest hear and there....bring the camera for ocean shots.

Thanks alot MamaSue and Kath2! Kath...how funny! My dbf suggested that we bring kites since I'm always in the mood for flying them when there is no wind! I have one that I am dying to get out of the package it's been in! The restaurant will be a good breakup from the TON of seafood we will be eating! MamaSue..I have to say the Omlette Factory sounds super! Little hole in the wall places usually do have the best foods around. I have to have the gingerbread waffles! Gingerbread anything and blueberry anything are a couple of my biggest addictions. We also never thought to take the trolley or go to Marginal Way. Maybe someone else will post some other options along the southern coast or perhaps further north a little. We love to travel! Thanks again:D

If you want to travel a little more North, then spend a afternoon or day at Kennebuckport. Take a trolley tour through the town. This is a great tour and not local transportation like Ogunquit. The tour will bring you around the town and point out places of interest, such as, Former President Bush's compound. A tour that is worth $8.00 per person. Of course, there is all kinds of little shops and good food. Further North is Freeport which L.L. Bean has a huge store and loads of factory outlets.
