I'm packing my bag to go to the hospital and I have no idea what is best for newborn winter gear. We live in northern Vermont so I can't believe this completely escaped me until now. My daughter was born in June so I didn't worry about it before.

Any recommendations?

My son hated all winter gear. Still does. As a baby I'd put him in a warm outfit (think fleece) then wrap him in 2 blankets baby burrito style to get him to/from the warm car. Strap him in and cover with the blankets.

A car seat cover is really nice to have. I don't know exactly what they're called, but it's like a blanket with elastic around the edges.

Would you be carrying the baby around in an infant seat? We are in IA and I had a cover that went over the car seat for my daughter. It had a flap that you could pull back to expose a hole over her face.

OK, I found this:

We had a fleece bunting (this one (http://www.landsend.com/pp/PatternFleeceBunting~133173_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::DBB&CM_MERCH=SRCH_00001&origin=search)) that worked well for taking DS from the house to the car and back. If we were going to be outdoors for any length of time, I'd cover the car seat with a blanket too, but that wasn't too often.

I concur on the car seat cover. My kids, like Christy's, hated all the winter gear and I found it so hard because their little limbs are so darn tiny. Gotta watch those little fingers so they don't bend back  !
