My dear stepmom just had to put one of her horses to sleep yesterday. Grey was 22. They thought he had colic, but the vet found a stomach tumor.

I want to send an ecard, but I'm not finding too many, and they're all for dogs and cats. I though y'all might be able to help me out.

I can't imagine losing a horse you've had forever. She lost her beloved dog to cancer in October, so this has just been a sucky year for her. I'll see her right after Christmas, and I'm planning on doing a charcoal drawing of her dog as part of her present. (Dad was supposed to mail me a photo, but he never did)

I'd prefer to find a free site. I've had some bad luck with online sites continuing to charge after I cancel, and also we're on a pretty tight budget. (our last landlord withheld returning our deposit, so we have to take her to court--and we really needed that money for Christmas)

Thanks in Advance!

I found this poem and this ecard...they can be combined. Or maybe you could find some other ideas at these sites. I'm so sorry for your step-mom's loss.

Hoofbeats of my Heart

My dearest friend,
though I can no longer feel the sleek firmness of you
the coarse thickness of your mane,
the sweetgrass scent of your velveteen muzzle
as I leaned in for just one more kiss...

Still you are with me, your hoofbeats
have become the very rhythm of my heart.

A simple email expressing your sorrow for her would do as equally well as an ecard or "real" card. A memory of the horse and your stepmom together would be very much appreciated.

It is worse in an odd way to lose a horse. I'm not sure why.

If she hasn't seen it, you might want to pass along the Rainbow Bridge Poem (easily googled and found in a number of different formats).

I would second this as I think that sympathy is best expressed by a personal heartfelt note (or email) of some kind as opposed to the "canned" sentiments of a card.

If there is a poem or other third party writing that you know that for some reason you feel is personally relevant, then that's fine but I would again add a personal note as to why you think the third party writing is appropriate along with the normal "personal" stuff one writes in a sympathy note.

I already sent a personal email note last night.

I just wanted to send her a card as well, and I'm leaving in the morning to go out of town for Christmas--I'll be seeing her and Dad next weekend. Susan's poem is perfect. I have heard the Rainbow Bridge hundreds of time, and I'm sure Tenn has as well. I'm not sure that she's heard of Hoofbeats of my Heart.

:( :( I just wanted to send my condolences. Having nearly lost one of my beloved horses recently, I know (almost :( ) her pain. I'm so sorry she's going through this.

I don't know if you'd be interested in an in-memory-of type of gift, but when I do lose a horse :( , I'm going to have one of these made:
