View Full Version : Getting Gray/Black Etchings Off White Plates

I'll never buy white plates again! They scratch too easily from utensils and have those gray/black etch markets all over them. Zud works very well (lessens it, although it doesn't get rid of it completely, and it comes back---and it requires a lot of elbow grease). But now we can't find Zud anywhere (I called the manufacturer and they say it's sold at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, but none of my local stores have it).
What does everyone else use? Is Barkeeper's Helper as good?
TIA

A lot of those marks are caused by the tines the plates lean against in the dishwasher.
Pfaltzgraf makes a product that they recommend for their dishes for this issue. Works like a charm. You might investigate if the manufacturer of your dishware recommends something in particular.

I have some type of white dishes that do this, but others do not, so I think it is somehow related to the finish on the dish. What brand of dish do you have?
I think Barkeeper's Friend and Bon Ami are both okay to use in this situation.

I have Noritake. It's not fine china; it's considered casual china, but it's all we have. It's this Colorwave stuff; white inside, color on the outside:

Bar Keepers Friend seems to work well on lots of things and have you tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? That is just amazing to me what it can lift.
I would suggest Bar Keeper's Friend also.

Oh no! That is the set I have too (in Colorwave gray). I didn't know that color was discontinued. So much for buying additional pieces that I've been meaning to buy. :(

So are you having problems with the etchmarks, too, Andrea?

Hi Ellen,
I see that Amazon has ZUD for 1.99 a can. You have to pay shipping though. Darn it.
A reviewer on Amazon said they called Noritake and Noritake recommended ZUD.
The link to Amazon: ZUD (http://www.amazon.com/Reckitt-Benckiser-00750-Heavy-Cleaner/dp/B000BOJ934)
HTH :)

Thanks, Hammster. I took your suggestion and looked at the Noritake site, but they weren't recommending/selling anything. I appreciate the Amazon link. I do buy stuff from Amazon, but I can't justify ordering this through them. I finally have gotten to the point where I understand that paying $6 in shipping isn't all that bad if I have to make a 40 mile trip to pick up something (the gas costs could be comparable). And I now buy from Penzey's without batting an eye at the shipping costs since I can't find anything close locally in quality or selection. But I draw the line at paying $5.99 in shipping for a $1.99 product!
Guess I'll try Barkeeper's helper.

I couldn't agree more with the high shipping for a $1.99 item. I did a quick order, but didn't pull the trigger, and the shipping gets more reasonable as the quantity goes up. But I'm not sure you want 15 cans of the stuff lying around. LOL.
Sounds like Barkeeper's might be your best bet locally.
Although I'm surprised Noritake doesn't have their own product. I was glad to see Pfaltzgraf has their own product. Took the guesswork right out of trying to find what might work.

Mine have a few, but they are pretty faint. I had to go check to see if there were any, so it hasn't been something that has been very noticeable.

I have black/gray marks on only certain plates (they are not very glossy/slick feel plates). I think mine are more scratches since they don't fade in the dishwasher etc. With certain plates (depending on the finish) -- they don't scratch. I only had a few plates that did scratch, so I use my other plates.
I've never heard of that happening before.

I too have the Noritake Colorwave (mine is purple) and many of my plates have etch marks, so I'll have to look for the Zud to see if it helps. Thanks for the tips.
Andrea- if there are still pieces you'd like to buy for your grey set, you might try either replacements.com or ebay. I bought some additional place settings on eBay at good prices.

FWIW - I use Zud and/or Barkeepers Friend on lots of things. My stainless sink, Corningware, very lightly on my nonstick pans that have PAM buildup, my tile backsplash. I'd buy 2 or 3 cans to make it worth the shipping.
Heck, push comes to shove, I'LL buy it for you an ship it! :D
