View Full Version : What do I need with my Wii?

Santa brought a Wii for Christmas and my brother's family bought other accessories. How many remotes and nunchucks each do I need for the total Wii experience? Do we need those remote jackets for each?

Any recommendations of great games? We have Big Brain, HSM, Mario, Play, and Dance Revolution. That should keep them busy. How do you get rid of the annoying music? How much is the USB connection thingee for wireless access?

Thanks!

Super Mario Galaxy got great reviews, and my kids really like it so far. I'll ask them later for recs on accessories...they're still sleeping now!

Enjoy!

A Wii remote charging unit is nice to have - saves on having to buy batteries. My son got some jackets, but I don't think they're necessary - also, the remotes don't fit into the charger with the jackets on, so he really doesn't use them (I don't know if this is the case with all chargers, though). He has 3 remotes and 2 nunchucks, but hasn't used the 3rd remote yet. Each game will show on the back how many remotes can be used with it.
Don't know how old your kids are...my DS (13) loves Guitar Hero, Tiger Woods - Wario Ware is a trip!! It is these little mini games (I'm talking maybe a minute each) that you complete one after the other - its hilarious to watch. He also got a Table Tennis game he likes. Wii is so much fun!

My children are 10 and 5.

How long do regular batteries last? I am considering returning the charging unit if the alkalines last for a while. Otherwise I have to find a place to put the charger AND there's that issue of disrobing the remotes every time.

My DS#3 has a Wii since last Christmas and he got the rechargeable Wiimotes this Christmas as he was spending a small fortune on batteries. Though his rechargeable batteries were good for awhile they didn't last very long before needing a charge. Nintendo had sent him covers that just peel off the bottom fairly easily so he can put the Wiimotes in the charging unit...he's a very happy boy.

He got Mario & Sonic Olympics this year and it's fun to watch them play.

Right now he has 3 Wiimotes and 2 nunchucks but wants the 4th Wiimote and 2 more nunchucks so 4 can play at once.

I can suggest you the game Zelda. I know this is old for the Wii but for me this is the best game for the Wii. Zelda has nice graphics and also this game makes good use of the Wii controller.

DS#3 has it for his Wii and he plays it for hours!

For games, check out Rayman Raving Rabbids (http://www.amazon.com/UBI-Soft-17319-Rayman-Rabbids/dp/B000GEDN5E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1198796411&sr=8-2) or Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (http://www.amazon.com/UBI-Soft-17383-Rayman-Rabbids/dp/B000SQ5LPU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1198796411&sr=8-1). I have the first one (and will probably get the second one soon :)) and love it! It's a bunch of fun "mini-games", similar to WiiPlay, but much funnier.

I just got Zelda for Christmas, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I have been playing Rayman Raving Rabbids. Those bunnies crack me up!! :D Super Monkeyball is another good game for the Wii.

I don't know anything about Zelda... is it an adventure game? And how does it play on the Wii? I'm looking for some type of game that will be fun and exercise, too... any suggestions? Thanks!

I really like the bowling too, and it uses muscles that have not been worked out in a while :D . I think I will get Dance Revolution for DD#3's birthday in February.

In addition to Sports, we have Wii Play, Zelda (it came in our original bundle), Mario Party 8, WarioWare, Party Games (I think that's the title--it's a collection of bar games), Maddon '07, Dancing with the Stars, and Guitar Hero.

My girls are 6 and 8, and they really like Mario Party 8, Wario Ware, and above all, Guitar Hero.

I've never played Zelda, but my husband has. He hasn't let the girls play it, though. I don't know if that's because it's too complicated or because it's too violent.

We try to check reviews at Gamespot.com before we buy a new game. It seems like there are a lot of lame ones out there.

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but how does your family like Dancing with the Stars? Do you actually dance? My family is threatening to buy it for me.

You don't *really* dance, but there are some dance moves. It's more of a rhythm game, but within the dancing with the stars framework. You choose a couple, and indicate whether you want to lead or follow, and whether you want to be the amature or the pro. Then the couple appears on the screen and does an actual dance. While they are dancing (which you can't watch while you're playing because you're watching for your own instructions), you use the wiimote and a nunchuck to perform a series of rhythmic motions as they appear on the screen. Periodically a completely unrelated dance move (mashed potato, maracas, stir it up) will appear, and you stop the rhythmic motions to do it. This continues for the lenghth of the dance. Then the judges show up and critique you and give you your score--just like on the show.

As you complete dances, you unlock other couples and other dances and it gets more complicated.

It took us a few minutes to figure out, and you HAVE to do the practice/tutorial/training (I can't remember exactly what it's called and the game's not right in front of me) first or you won't have a clue what you're supposed to. But after everyone has done that, it's pretty fun. And two people can "dance" at once, which is most fun, I think.

My kids and I can do it together, which is also fun.

Thanks! I was hoping for something that would be more of a workout. If I want to play a game with the kids, I think I'll stick with Dance Dance Revolution the PS2!

Also, for the original poster, my kids love the karaoke games for both the PS2 and the Wii. They just got the High School Musical karaoke and love it.

One of the things we really like about the Wii is that you can download "old school" nintendo games. Most all of the Mario Bros., old zelda, donkey kong.... . You pay using wii points, each point is $1.
The games are anywhere between 500 - 2000 points. Pretty cheap considering that the new games run around 45$

Funny thing about the wii bowling.. I recently went bowling for a dept. team building activity and lets just say that my real bowling scores were not anywhere near my wii scores :p :o

DS#3 says you have to have the wired adapter to connect your Wii to the internet not just the USB adaptor. He doesn't connect with his because of the internet service he has at school.

If you have a wireless network setup at your house then you can connect the wiii thru the router pretty easy

Not sure about wii points. I know you can purchase on line or at best buy. I also think that certain games once registered give you points.

If 1 point is $1, wouldn't 500 points be $500?

Dance Dance Revolution does not seem to be picking up on HOlly's steps. Any suggestions? She gets no indication that she is hitting any of the steps correctly.

There could be something wrong with the dance mat.

But it also takes awhile to get the hang of DDR. Has she had it before? It's easy to get yourself a little bit off of the dots and then it doesn't pick up what you're doing. And if she's light she may really have to stomp on it. When my younger son plays it, it's really loud from him stamping.
