I was looking at my new issue of Eating Well tonight, and reading what I thought was a great letter to the editor. She was commenting on calorie restiction from an article in a previous issue on "The Search For an Anti-Aging Diet." When I see the letter is signed by Kay Henderson from South Lake Tahoe, CA, I am thinking - "Hey, I know her!"

Great letter Kay! I went to their website to see if I could locate it and reprint it here, but I had no luck finding it. My favorite part .......

"If I have one trip on the face of the earth, I want to enjoy it." Amen!

I don't have the current Eating Well so I haven't seen it, but I guess we shouldn't be surprised that Kay's letter would be published - she's always so thoughtful and articulate! :)

I saw the same thing the other day and thought the exact same thing! I even told DH who was sitting next to me. I think it's cool how this board has put us all in touch with each other. :)

Great letter Kay, and FTR, I agree 100%. :)

I read that as well and agreed wholeheartedly. Should have figured it was one of us ;)

So funny, as I was reading the letter I thought "this sounds like a familiar voice" and it was! Well said, Kay. Agree 100%.

OK, for those of us who don't get EW...our curiosity is piqued!

What was the gist of the letter? Is she pro calorie restriction? Or anti calorie restriction?

The letter:

I can understand why calorie restriction was included in Peter Jaret's article "The Search for the anti-Aging Diet," since there is at least some evidence that it works.

What I can't understand is why anyone would even consider trading normal eating and weight for the dubious benefit of living longer. Food is one of life's great pleasures (at least for those of us with good digestion). People who follow this practice will have to eat less, will look like desiccated leaves before they are out of middle age, have no nutritional reserve should they become seriously ill, be uncomfortable sitting in a chair and have decreased libido. For what? A few more years at best? If I have one trip on the face of the earth, I want to enjoy it.

I'm not arguing that people should be overweight or obese, or that they should not have information or the right to make their own choices. I'm just saying for me, there is a difference between reasonable and ridiculous and this is it.

Heh. Considering that article appeared in a magazine called "Eating Well" I suspect most readers will agree with her.

It was me! I included "not for publication" in my letter, as is my usual practice. When the editor called me up and asked if she could print it, I was so flattered that I said yes!

great letter, Kay! very articulate and to the point. not to mention, logical and thoughtful.

just curious though -- why would you write "not for publication" on it?

I guess the reasons are not for publication...but it's us, your close, personal CLBB friends! We need to know because we're curious that way.

I saw that letter and realized it was our own Kay Henderson - congrats on having your (very articulate) letter published! And kudos to EW for being willing to publish letters of differing viewpoints - I get kind of tired of CL publishing nothing but flattering, congratulatory letters. How boring  .
