View Full Version : Rating the Threads

I just wanted to add my 2 cents about the "rate the thread" feature. Personally, I don't like it. It's such a subjective thing, and I think it could create some bad feelings, if you know what I mean. We don't need any of THAT now, do we? I don't see how it is really useful to the BB users. It doesn't take that long to check out a thread to see if it is useful or interesting to me personally.
Just an opinion....

I agree. But it would be helpful on recipes, I suppose, if the majority was a hit...
The other thing is what are you rating? The original posting? The thread as a whole? Any part of it that you happen to react to? I don't think we need it....I've always used the number of posts and the frequency with which a post runs to the top of the list as a way to gauge what might be worth a visit.

I agree - we all have different interests and what one person rates a '1', another may rate a '5'. It's useless. It's not like we are reviewing movies, and even then you can't always go by that.

I agree that it would lead to a lot of hurt feelings. And if any of us were really that pressed for time would we be on this board in the first place? :)

I also agree with those before me. Like Beth, I go by the number of posts, posts that keep going to the top, etc. I also find the rating section a waste of space. That space could be used to make the Name of Thread space bigger. :D If keeping track of a certain thread because of interested material within, then I click the envelope with asterick at bottom of thread that says "Receive updates to this thread". That way I only receive emails on threads that I am personally interested in and not all of them. :D

I ditto what everyone before me said - rating the threads is WAY too subjective and definitely could lead to hurt feelings.
Here's a suggestion on how better to use that column...in the thread asking us about breaking the board into smaller categories, Jen from BC just voted no for breaking up the boards, but then added the GREAT (IMHO) suggestion of including subject icons (i.e. different icons for recipe reviews, travel tips, recipe searches, etc.). This seems like a perfect compromise of offering more subject information, while still keeping us all in the same board. So...you could get rid of the ratings column (which no one really seems to like) and replace it with a subject icon column (which many people seem interested in) -- all without increasing the size of the page.

Great suggestion, Tracey. I think that would solve both!
I, too, do not like the rating system. I don't plan to rate anything, and if no one else does, maybe it will disappear.

I love Tracey's suggestion about the icons for different topics. I too agree that rating the threads will only lead to some hurt/bad feelings ( without intent of course.)

Did y'all notice that the "Rate This Thread" column seems to have disappeared? Fast response by CL on that one, way to go!

Wow! I rate CL's response time 5 stars! :D (and I agree that rating the threads is unnecessary and could lead to hurt feelings--it hurts enough when you post a thread and not many people respond.) :(
