I'm vacationing in Nova Scotia at the end of the month, with time planned in both Halifax and Cape Breton. Any suggestions for restaurants or other great things to do (besides eat lobster, which I plan to do lot of)? TIA!

What a great vacation you will have JD - we did the trip a couple of times while my son was in school in the east - we stayed in Halifax - now that was about 4 years ago - the restaurants right down at the Harbour were fabulous - the best fresh seafood imaginable - and up past 'the traffic circle' - I am sure people from Halifax know what I mean - were a few really good restaurants - be sure to visit Peggy's Cove - such beautiful country - are you driving? Anxious to hear about your trip - we just may do that again this Summer too.

Mackelvie's in downtown Halifax has great seafood, O'Carrol's is wonderful for everything, and the Quarterdeck in Summerville (few hours drive from Hfx) makes the best planked salmon imaginable. Let me know if there is any other info I can help with - but I don't know a lot about Cape Breton - usually just whip through there on my way to Nfld.:)

I don't have anything specific to suggest, but here's what I did on my Bangor/Nova Scotia/Cape Breton/PEI drive in 1989 or 1990. I ate lobster almost every night, finding lobster boils everywhere, from little churches to restaurants to provincial parks where I was camping. There was one place in particular, where you could fill up on the appetizer of all you can eat mussels.

Have fun, you've brought back some fond memories.

Thanks, everyone! I'll definitely try one or more of your suggestions Alisa. I'll also check into the traffic circle area, Lanie. I think I could go most of the week at church dinners! We are flying and renting a car - DH is there on business and I'll join him at the end. I'll report back in early August and let you know what we found.

We visited about two years ago and had the best time!
Places to see include the Alexander G. Bell Museum, Fort Louisbourg, Charlotte Lane Cafe in Shelburne Lunenberg and Digby scallops.

I can't believe vacation is over. Here are the restaurants we went to:

McKelvies in Halifax - thanks for the reco, it was my first excellent lobster of the week!

Bish in Halifax - just opened on July 14th, fabulous food. I was drooling over each description. I just love when you go into a restaurant and they ask "would you like to start with a glass of champagne?". Heaven! It is right down on the water front. I started with smoked salmon, smoked on site, and followed with sea bass in an orange sauce. Both were excellent, as was the corn bread.

The Cove Motel and Dining Room was another great seafood place - very relaxed and excellent food. It was hear that I finally got an answer to my question of how much lobster meat is in a 1.5 lb lobster. The answer is about 20% is meat, so about 5 oz, noting that 4 oz = 2 ww points. I can avoid the butter, so lobster makes a great low point meal for me.

The Purple Thistle Dining Room at Keltic Lodge in Cape Breton - we were on a meal plan that included dinner and I was very pleased with the selection and quality of food for a meal plan.

Thanks for all the recos. We didn't get south/west of Halifax but I will use your suggestions for another trip. Hopefully DH will end up out there on business again soon.
